Castleconnor Hurling:
Yes for the first time we want to actually talk about hurling. The club is trying to setup up indoor hurling for the 8-12 year old boys in the area. As resources are thin on the ground we were wondering would any home or business or school be willing to lend us 7-8 youth helmets and indoor hurls. It is hoped to buy gear in the new year with the assistance of the county hurling board but for the moment if you have an old helmet sitting in the cupboard it would be a great help.

Under 10

Our team had its last engagement of the year when they took on St.Patricks in Dromard in the west Sligo B final. Despite some nerves at the start we eventually came into the game but at the midway point we were trailing by 8 scores to 2. For the last 2 quarters the team found their scoring touch and when the final whistle went we were on the wrong end of a 1 score loss. This was a very good performance by the panel who showed the most important quality of “never giving up” and playing to the final whistle which bodes well for the future. The club would like to thank the managent team of David Mahoney, David Durkan, Michael Cahill and Paul Maughan for their efforts all throughout the year. Management would like the children for their efforts all year and their willingness and eagerness to learn. After the final, the team were treated to a night out in Muddy Burns.

U-13 Competitions:

The team have reached the Feilé quarter final, which is a great achievement for a very young squad. The game takes place next weekend. At the time of going to press it looks like it is on Saturday at 2pm in Kent park. Good luck to all involved and please come out and support.

Minor B Championship:

The minor team played the B championship semi-final on Saturday in sun drenched Kent Park. We were under-strength but unfortunately the performance still did not do the team justice to their previous performances earlier the year. Coolaney/Mullinabreena.ran out easy winners on a score of 3-19 v 0-6. This is the end of the minor season. Thanks to the panel and management for their efforts throughout the year and we look forward to seeing this players progress to the clubs adult teams.

Lotto Rollover:

The lotto jackpot stands at €6900 as there was no winner of the €6750 jackpot when the draw took place last Friday night in Mahoney’s Bar. Details next week.

Well done

The club would like to congratulate Marty Duffy and his team of officials on their officiating of the All Ireland final on Sunday. A large number from the club were there to witness it up close and it was great to see and know those involved close to the actions.

Also well done to all in Western Gaels hurling club on reaching the county senior final for the second year running. Despite our minors playing in Sligo at almost the same time a large contingent of supporters made the very exciting second half of the game.

Commiserations

Hard luck to the Kieran Holmes and the Eoghan Rua ladies team who lost the county junior championship final on Saturday afternoon, going down to a strong Drumcliffe/Rosses Poiint team.

U-13 Competitions:

The team travelled the long journey to Grange on Saturday afternoon to take on the local side St.Mholaise Gaels. A very good performance despite missing a few lads meant the team ran out easy winners on a scoreline of 5-21 v 1-8. The panel await news of their next game but it is a credit to all involved for the way they have turned their championship around after suffering a heavy defeat in the first round. Well done to all.

Sympathy:

Sympathy is extended to the Stenson family, Curry and Carraroe on the sad death of Johnny.

Senior

The senior team bowed out of the senior championship after 11 years when losing their second relegation game against Curry last weekend. The team showed good spirit and fighting qualities throughout but the more clinical Curry side scored the goals when needed to bring them past the post. At the half time break we trailed by 4 points and after ten minutes of the second half Curry scored their second goal to put them far enough ahead to win out comfortably with their third goal being scored in the final kick of the game with the final scoreline of 3-9 v 0-9.

Team: B.Barrins, P.McGuinness, P.Naughton, D.Carrabine, B.Howley, R.Healy, K.Barrett, , M.Langan, K.Tuffy, K.Langan, B.Curley, N.Judge, P.Kilcullen, A.Cawley, D.Fox. Sub: F.Barrett.

Thanks to the team and management for their efforts throughout the year. Despite the year that passed it was great to see the effort and never give up spirit the team showed in the playoffs and hopefully this means a quick return to the senior championship.

Good luck

Good luck to all in Western Gaels hurling club in the senior county semi-final on Saturday evening in Markievicz park at 5pm.

U-13 Competitions:

Following their heavy defeat by Tubbercurry the under 13 team had a good victory over Tourlestrane last Friday evening in Division 1 of the Feile. Excellent performances were seen in a great performance. The team take on Shamrock Gaels on Friday evening away at Shamrock Gaels Park in Coola.

Under 16:

The under 16 team put in a real brave and gutsy performance against a more physical Tubbercurry side at Markiecvicz Park in the U-16 B Championship Final last Saturday week August 15th. The team trailed 1-5 to 0-0 after 15 minutes but two net smashers from Kevin McDonnell put the lads right back in contention. The team hit many wides in the first half, and failure to put away these chances on a day like that can prove costly. Final score was 3-8 to 3-3 in favour of Tubbercurry. The team put in a great effort all year, and captured the C league title also. They were promoted to the B Championship and defeated St. Molaise Gaels in round 1 in Grange. In round 2, Tubbercurry were visitors to St. Brendan’s Park in Corballa and finished strongly 4-14 to 2-9. In the semi final of the competition we were paired with Drumcliffe/Rosses Point who progressed as winners of their group having defeated Curry and drawn with Enniscrone/Kilglass. We proved much too strong for Drumcliffe at Oxfield park, putting in an excellent performance and storming into the final on a scoreline of 5-15 to 2-7. The final was a good contest and was much closer than when the sides had previously clashed, but Castleconnor’s missed opportunities in the opening period proved to cost us. Credit to all involved for putting in a great effort all year. Michael McDonnell, Paul Kilcullen and Darren Ruane were the management team and we thank them for their time and effort. Panel: Brian Feeney, Anthony Kilcullen, Conor Judge, Liam Naughton, Keith Earlis, Ronan Barrett, Kevin McDonnell, Martin Foody, Eoin Flynn, John McDonnell, Shane Wright, Matthew Cullen, Stephen Curley, Jason Earlis, Ciaran Kilcullen, Keith Foody, James Flynn, Eoin Kent.

Minor B Championship:

The minor team got their championship campaign off to a winning start after a two point defeat of a gutsy Tourlestrane side last Monday evening week at Tourlestrane. The team trailed 2-7 to 1-3 at the interval and showed tremendous character in the second half to come back to win on a scoreline of 4-9 to 2-13. Barry Judge was taken down twice inside the large parallelogram and the resultant spot kicks were slotted away by Paul Sweeney. The team lost Judge to injury early in the second half but the team battled on and should have won by more, having missed scoreable opportunities. The introduction at half time of Stephen Kilgannon proved crucial as the new full forward blasted to the net twice. Other scores from David Carrabine, John McDonnell, Brian Curley, Judge and Sweeney helped the team to victory in this round 1 contest. Last Monday evening the team had a four point defeat of Shamrock Gaels in a tough battle at St. Brendan’s Park. In greasy conditions the team led 1-4 to 0-4 at the interval and faced a strong breeze in the second half. The team worked well in the second half and finished strong, winning by 4 points, 3-10 to 2-9 in a good contest. The team were due to take on St. Michael’s at home on Monday evening at 7pm in round 3.

Speedy Recovery:

We wish John Tuffy and Barry Judge speedy recoveries on their respective hand and knee injuries sustained in recent championship action.

Club Meeting:

Club monthly meetings resume on Wednesday 9th September @ 9.30pm. All members please attend.

Lotto Rollover:

The lotto jackpot stands at €6600 as there was no winner of the €6450 jackpot when the draw took place last Friday night in Mahony’s Bar. Numbers Drawn were 17, 21, 31 and 32. Tara Flanelly, Templeboy was the only match three winner. The next draw takes place on Saturday September 5th in Muddy Burns, Corballa.

Community Games:

Junior Championship

Castleconnor bowed out of the Junior B championship at the quarter-final stage when losing to a strong St.Johns team in Dromard last Saturday. Played in dreadful conditions the team played well to stay in touch when playing against the wind to turn over at the half time break on a score of 0-12 v 1-3. The team were hopeful at the start of the half but two dismissals and a sloppy goal conceded ended that. However the team never gave up and played valiantly till the end and ended up losing 1-19 v 1-4. Team; B.Barrins, U.McGranahan, P.Flynn, K.Maye, K.Cawley, D.Howley, M.Carr, B.Howley, A.Mullarkey, J.Cullen, F.Barrett, P.Maughan, S.Kilgannon, Subs: J.McGuinness, S.Feeney, D.Gilmartin, D.Ruane

Thanks to the panel and management for all their efforts this year.

Senior

The senior team travelled to Curry for the first round of the championship relegation playoff against Shamrock Gaels. The team started well and were leading by 5 points midway through the first half after Paul Kilcullen scored a great goal after a good catch over the full back, but Gaels hit a purple patch and leveled the scores but at the short break we lead by 1 with the score of 1-6 v 1-5.

Gaels started the second half well and lead by 2 after 5 minutes when Castleconnor were hit with the dismissal of one of our midfielders. Despite this the lads dug deep and in injury time the teams were level. Two minutes into injury time a mistake a pick off the ground by our keeper was penalized and allowed Gaels the easy opportunity to go into the lead. From the resulting kickout a mistake was cruelly punished by the winning goal. The team play Curry in the second round of the league stage next week. Team: B.Barrins, P.McGuinness, P.Naughton, D.Carrabine, B.Howley, R.Healy, K.Barrett, N.Fox, M.Langan, K.Tuffy, K.Langan, B.Curley, N.Judge, P.Kilcullen, A.Cawley. Sub: D.Fox.

U16 Div 3 League final: Castleconnor 1-19 v Geevagh 0-5

Well Done to the under 16 team on their comprehensive defeat of Geeavgh in the league final last evening at Dromard.

The team continue to train in preperation for the B Championship final on Saturday 15th August at 5.30pm at Markievicz Park.

U16B FC Semi-final: Castleconnor 5-15 v Drumcliffe/RPoint 2-7, July 21, 2009

The under 16 team reached the B Championship semi final after comprehensively defeating Drumcliffe/Rosses Point last Friday evening at Oxfield Park. The team put together some great moves and were the best throughout. Martin Foody who excelled at midfield got the team off the mark after 30 seconds from an expeditious run from midfield. The team led 3-7 to 0-2 at the interval, and despite a gallant comeback from the hosts early in the second half, we stepped up a gear when required. Goals from John McDonnell, Stephen Curley(2) and Kevin McDonnell(2) sealed the deal for Castleconnor. Final Score Castleconnor 5-15 Drumcliffe 2-7. The team take on Tubbercurry in the final. Next Wednesday July 29th the team play Geevagh in the league final. Venue is to be announced at time of going to press. We wish the team and management of Michael McDonnell, Paul Kilcullen and Darren Ruane the very best of luck.

U14A Championship Final: Castleconnor 2-14 v St.Marys 1-15 July 13, 2009

The under 14 team defeated St. Mary’s on Friday evening last in the A Championship final in an enthralling encounter at Markievicz Park. These two sides have clashed three times this year, all in county finals.

In February, Castleconnor defeated St. Mary’s in the County Feile final 2-10 to 2-9 at the same venue. The north division side got one back on us in the A League final some weeks back by ten points, despite leading by two at the interval. Since then, it has been nothing but hard work and effort from both management and team players. After a fantastic weekend at Feile peil na nÓg, the team were focused on the Championship final, and the Feile definitely stud to this group of players.

Referee Enda Mullaney got proceedings under way at 8.15pm and Cian Barrins got Castleconnor off the mark after fine work from Stephen Curley and Matthew Cullen who bagged 2-6 and 0-3 respectively. Trailing 0-6 to 0-3, Matthew Cullen got our side going again on 13 minutes after a Damien Barrett pass and 4 unanswered points from Stephen Curley had the crowd on their feet. Kevin McDonnell was having the game of his life at midfield, catching clean ball in mid air while Shane Wright worked well along side him and the hardworking James Flynn did also.

Leading by a point with 3 minutes left to the interval, Curley went on an unstoppable surging run and blasted to the St. Mary’s net. Our rearguard were superb for the last few minutes of the opening period, with Mary’s not registering another score after the 17th minute. An excellent catch on the kickout by Ciaran Kilcullen resulted in another score, followed by a 13 metre free from Curley after an excellent pass from Conor Gallagher.

Castleconnor headed to the dressing rooms at half time been 1-9 to 0-6 the better. If you thought this game was over at half time, well you were wrong.

Three minutes into the second period a high ball into our danger area ended up in the back of our net. St. Mary’s got a great confidence boost at this point and on the kickout they won possession and popped a point straight between the sticks. We didn’t panic however, and the fantastic exhibition of fielding from McDonnell gave every one at Markievicz park something to talk about as this County A Championship final opened up to be a real thrill-a-minute epic. The half back line of Eoin Kent, Conor Judge and Gallagher were a real help in support play for the midfield and both wing backs were carrying the ball up the wings and delivering quality ball. Kevin McDonnell inspired the side with two fantastic points, one from the left sideline approximately 30 metres out. This left the score at 1-11 to 1-7 in our favour.

It was end to end for a few minutes now, but St. Mary’s made use of their part of the possession scoring four unanswered points leaving the sides at 1-11 apiece.

After 22 minutes in the second half, we trailed 1-14 to 1-12 but the words of encouragement from the line and the crowd of supporters rallied behind the team and the lads new it wasn’t over until the final whistle.

One or two high balls were floating in around our goal mouth but Arthur Beardshaw was on alert and kept busy, and was supported by the corner backs Keith Foody, Liam Naughton and full back Jason Earlis. On 24 minutes in the second half of this epic encounter a thunderous roar from our supporters nearly brought Markievicz park down as Stephen Curley rattled the Mary’s net for the second time after another expeditious run from the right hand side. The score at this stage read Castleconnor 2-12 St Mary’s 1-14.

Matthew Cullen and McDonnell added two more points on 29 and 30 minutes respectively, as St. Mary’s notched up another point on the board to leave the final score at 2-14 to 1-15 in Castleconnor’s favour in this A Championship final – another cup was coming back west! Scenes of delight were to be seen after the final whistle, as all this year’s hard work had paid off.

Peter McHugh, Chairman of Coiste na nÓg Shligigh presented Kevin McDonnell with the Cup.

Well done to the team and management of Michael Langan, Jim Kent, Frank Barrett & Barnes Kelly for their time and effort into this team. We would also like to thank Kevin Finan (Finan Formwork LLC) for sponsoring the team with their fantastic new kit, and also to PJ Judge, Judges Honda for the tracksuit and gearbags. Thanks to all parents, supporters and club officials for coming out in fantastic numbers all year.

After the game the large calvacade of cars headed for Mahony’s where refreshments were served for all.

Team on duty was: Arthur Beardshaw, Keith Foody, Jason Earlis, Liam Naughton, Conor Gallagher, Conor Judge, Eoin Kent, Kevin McDonnell, Shane Wright, James Flynn, Stephen Curley, Ciaran Kilcullen, Cian Barrins, Matthew Cullen, Damien Barrett. Subs: David McGinty, Sean Carrabine, Lewis Beardshaw, Enda Kilcullen, Stephen Durkan.

U16B Championship, Rd 2: Castleconnor 2-9 v Tubbercurry 4-14, June 30th 2009

Monday June 29th at St. Brendan's Park

The under 16 team suffered defeat at the hands of Tubbercurry last evening at Corballa.

Castleconnor had built up a good first half lead and led 2-6 to 0-5 at the interval. However Tubbercurry picked up the pace in the second half as Castleconnor took the foot off the pedal and they found themselves in arrears which they failed to get out of.

Castleconnor have finished their group stage of the competition, and will wait on the result of the next game between Tubbercurry and St. Molaise Gaels to see who will progress from the group.

U16 Champ Rd 1: Castleconnor 3-8 v St.Molaise Gaels 2-9, June 21, 2009

The under 16 team traveled to Grange on Monday evening week last to take on St. Molaise Gaels in round 1 of the B championship.

A fine summer’s evening made for the perfect game and indeed this it was. The first two or three minutes was end to end with the rearguard on both sides pressurizing the attack. Castleconnor finally got off the mark and went in 1-3 to 1-1 the better at the break.

St. Molaise Gaels came fighting back in the second half and with 15 minutes on the clock things didn’t look to be going our way. The final ten minutes were nip and tuck and a goal from Eoin Flynn started the Castleconnor comeback. The team were awarded a penalty soon after, and Kevin McDonnell blasted the ball to the roof of the net. 3-7 to St. Molaise Gaels 2-9. On the kickout SMG went on the attack and were awarded a penalty after a surging run at goal. Luckily for us, the resultant was blasted to the right and wide. Immediately down the other end, Castleconnor were awarded a free 45 metres out and substitute John McDonnell was introduced to kick the ball right between the sticks to leave the score at 3-8 to 2-9 in favour of Castleconnor.

On Monday last the team were fixtured to play Tubbercurry in round 2.

Team on duty was Brian Feeney, Jason Earlis, Conor Judge, Ronan Barrett, Anthony Kilcullen, Liam Naughton, Martin Foody, Keith Earlis, Matthew Cullen, Kevin McDonnell, Shane Wright, Eoin Flynn, Stephen Curley.

U-8/U-10 Coaching:

Under 8 and 10 coaching continues Friday evening from 7-8pm. Bonniconlon were visitors to Corballa on Friday evening for U10 and U8 games. Both teams provided a great evenings entertainment for the large gather. Thanks to Bonniconlon for making the trip. All boys and girls at this age level are encouraged to come along.

Under 12

The under 12 team traveled to Markievicz Park on Sunday last for the finals of the C competition. The team was not helped by the fact that the Minor board arranged the finals for the same day as the Community games finals across town which denied up to 6 players to perform at their best in either location. Hopefully the minor board takes this on board for next year. The team played St.Farnans in the semi final of the cup competition and despite sprinting across town put on a great display and were most unlucky to lose by a solitary point. The team played good football in patches and it was an overall good team performance. Well done to the team and management

Under 14:

The under 14 team take on Ballisodare this Friday in the A Championship semi final. At time of going to press full details are not known but it is presumed that Ballisodare have home advantage. More details on Sligo GAA website or our own Club website.

The team are eagerly awaiting Feile Peil na nOg in Kildare in July. On Friday 4th July the team take on our host club Cellbridge in Round 1 of group games. Between 7 and 9pm on the same day the team will take part in the Feile Parade from St. Conleth’s Park, along main Street to Cill Mhuire Car Park. On Saturday July 5th the team and supporters travel to Kilcullen and are in a group with Cellbridge, Kilcullen and Coralstown/Kinnegad from Westmeath. This will be round 2 and 3 of the group stages and the skills competition will also be held at this venue. The semi finals will also be played on this day. On Sunday, the finals will be held. If we are successful in reaching the final of our division it will be held at St. Conleth’s Park. The Club extends good wishes to the team and management and are very proud of this achievement. The club also thanks everyone who are currently conveying good wishes to the club and team for this All Ireland festival.

Under 16:

The under 16 team are awaiting word of their Division 3 league Final. The team have been drawn in a group with Tubbercurry and St. Molaise Gaels in the B Championship. Round 1 is away to St. Molaise Gaels on Monday June 22nd. Round 2 is a home fixture against Tubbercurry on Monday 29th June.

Minor:

The Minor team participated in the Minor Blitz finals that took place at Kevinsfort. The team defeated Bunninadden/Ballymote in the semi-final and lost out to St.Mholaise Gaels in the next game. The team are coming back to training this week after the leaving cert and preparing for the championship later in the Summer

Junior:

The Junior travelled to Shamrock Gaels last Saturday evening for the 5th round of the division 5 league. The good evening meant we had a very good turnout and with the leaving over we were able to welcome back a good number of players. We started slowly in the first half and but as the half wore on we started to play a better brand of football and went in at the half time whistle losing 2-7 v 0-4.

From the restart Brian Curley scored a good goal and then two points meant we were right back in the game. We missed a number of good opportunities after this and when the home team scored their third goal with 15 minutes to go the game as a contest was over, but we kept trying and ended up losing 3-19 v 1-9 Team; B.Barrins, U.McGranahan, P.Flynn, D.Gilmartin, D.Howley, K.Barrett, F.Barrett, J.O’Regan, M.Fitzsimons, B.Curley, C.Gordon, B.Judge, P.Maughan, N.Fox, A.Mullarkey.Subs.M.Langan, S.Feeney, D.Ruane, B.Kelly, A.Naughton, J.Cullen, M.Carr.

We play Eastern Harps this weekend at home. Time and day to be arranged later in the week.

Senior

We had Geevagh as visitors to Corballa on Sunday afternoon for the penultimate round of the division 1 league. This was a relegation four pointer but we were not helped by the unavailability of 8 senior players due to injury. Despite this we played well in the first half and despite losing David Fox to injury, we turned over at the break losing 0-6 v 0-4. It was tight for the first 10 minutes of the half but then Geevagh started to take over and when Paul Kilcullen then had to leave the field we were left to finish the last quarter of the game with 14 players. Geevagh deserved their win on a score of 0-14 v 0-6. We are now relegated to division 2 for the 2010 season. It is now 5 weeks to championship and it is hoped that some of the injuries will clear up in time for this. Team: B.Barrins, K.Barrett, J.Tuffy, D.Fox, A.Naughton, M.Langan, J.O’Regan, K.Naughton, P.Kilcullen, B.Curley, A.Cawley, F.Barrett, P.Maughan, N.Fox, N.Judge. Subs; C.Gordon. Castleconnor travelled to Ransboro on Saturday evening to play Coolera/Strandhill in the 12th round of the division 1 league on Saturday evening. A number of downpours during the game did not affect the quality of the game which turned out to be very good. We got off to a very slow start and this was what ultimately lead to our downfall when we trailed by 7 v 1 after 15 minutes. But we finished the half well and were behind 0-8 v 0-4 at the break. The lead was reduced further in the half but a burst by the home team midway through it meant we were chasing a goal in the last minutes but their defence held firm and we lost 0-15 v 0-11. Team C.Gordon, P.McGuinness, J.Tuffy, B.Howley, B.Foody, M.Langan, D.Fox, P.Kilcullen, D.Carrabine, J.O’Regan, N.Fox, A.Cawley, N.Judge, P.Naughton, S.Curley. The division league leaders Tourlestrane were visitors to Corballa on Saturday evening. A strong breeze blew towards the Mayo end for the whole game and the visitors had the advantage of it in the first half. We contained them well and went in at the break trailing 0-6 v0-2.

We scored directly from the restart and kept going till we eventually took the lead with 4 minutes to go. From the resulting kickout the visitors drove up the field and scored a goal and from the following kickouts scored 1-1, to end what should have been a morale boosting victory against the league leaders. However the team played with great spirit and showed that the hard training of the last few weeks is starting to pay off. Next week we travel to Coolera.

A number of missed goal opportunities in the first half proved costly though we lead by 4 points at the break playing great football against the wind.

St.Marys started the second half in whirlwind fashion and had two goals scored very quickly. A third goal later in the half was the final nail and despite a good finish from our team we ended up losing by 4-9 v 1-8.

Coming up to the break a good solo goal by Brian Curley gave us a four point cushion of 1-5 v 0-4. The visitors had the first two points of the half but we steadied and a fine punched effort by Ultan McGranahan put us back in the driving seat but the visitors fought back. With five minutes to go Morgan Fitzsimons scored a great goal after a strong solo run. This was a very good team performance and the young members of the team are improving with every game. The second half saw a total collapse from our team and with no subs available had to carry on with a number of injuries losing badly 2-17 v 1-5 with the goal coming from Brian Curley. Team: B.Barrins, K.Naughton, U.McGranahan, D.Howley, P.Flynn, D.Gilmartin, M.Fitzsimons, C.Gordon, F.Barrett, B.Curley, Brian Howley, P.Maughan, G.Holmes. Subs: Brendan Howley, S.Kilgannon, S.Feeney. Our next game is away to the league leaders Tubbercurry.

U14A League Semi: Castleconnor 5-14 v Ballisodare 4-6, May 25, 2009

The under 14 team have reached the A league final after defeating Ballisodare on Friday evening in Corballa. It was a very even first half where we lead by 5 at the break after playing with the strong wind.

Goals at crucial times in the second half paved the way for a 5-14 v 4-6 victory.

At the moment the time and venue for the final had not been confirmed though it is thought to be in Markievicz next Friday evening.

Div 1 Rd 10: Castleconnor 1-9 v Tubbercurry 1-9, May 18, 2009

Tubbercurry were the visitors to Corballa on Sunday for round 8 of the division 1 league. A strong wind blew from the Gap across the field with no advantage to either team. Tubber went into an early two point lead but a great goal from Norman Fox after a super catch put Castleconnor in front for the first time. By the half time whistle we lead by 1-4 v 0-5.

We controlled most of the second half but our inaccuracy from frees was not helping. Coming into the final minute we lead by 2 when Tubber struck for a goal to take the lead. However our heads did not drop and in the last minute of injury time Michael Langan put over the equalizing point to get a well desereved point with the score 1-9 each. Team:Colin Gordon, Brendan Howley, John Tuffy, Pat McGuinness, David Carrabine, Michael Langan(0-2), David Fox, Paul Kilcullen(0-2), Karl Tuffy, Brian Curley(0-1), Alan Cawley(0-2), John O’Regan, Frank Barrett, Norman Fox(1-0), Niall Judge(0-2) Sub Brian Howley

Next weekend we are away to Ballymote. Training continues on Tuesday at 8pm

On Saturday from 12 noon to 6.00 p.m. the Junior members of the club will provide the entertainment and on Sunday the Senior players will take centre stage from 12 - 6 p.m..

We invite all those who are interested in handball to come along and support those playing or to participate and have a game. It is a great opportunity to try out the game or equally if you played some years ago it is an ideal opportunity to renew your acquaintance with handball again. The main emphasis over the weekend is Fun and we hope everyone will enjoy themselves. Light refreshments will be served

History was made in Castleconnor handball club the weekend before last when the club’s first adult Connacht handball title came to the club in the Junior C 40 x 20 grade. Tom Foody & Joe Gorman had an epic semi-final match with Galway before coming out on top after a marathon struggle by 21-20, 20-21, 21-14 the previous week. Ironically it was an all Castleconnor final with Tom Foody and Joe Gorman pitted against their club mates Michael Browne & Tom Tuffy. The first game was very close and Foody & Gorman just held out after an entertaining first game winning by 21-19. The eventual winners had a good 12-2 lead in the second. However, Michael Browne played excellent handball throughout and fought hard to keep in the contest alongside Tomas Tuffy. Browne & Tuffy were within striking distance of Foody & Gorman at only 16-13 behind. Foody & Gorman with that will bit more experience eventually winning the second game by 21-16 to win the historic final.

Then last week, Collooney reached the Provincial decider following a narrow victory over a gallant Castleconnor team in the Sligo final played in Collooney on Wednesday evening last.

Collooney were overwhelming favourites to win, but Castleconnor hadn’t fully read the script and very nearly pulled off a shock victory. Peter Davey from Collooney started brightly against Castleconnor’s Martin Cooney. However it soon became evident that Cooney was going to be a difficult opponent for Davey and so it proved to be. Cooney with 2 very good hands began to find his range and took the first game by 21-12. Cooney kept up the pressure and it was clear that Davey was tiring against a stronger opponent so much so that Davey failed to register a score in the second.

With a 30 point advantage going into the doubles Castleconnor were in the driving seat. Collooney’s John McLoughlin & Sean Coen right from the start began to eat away into’s Castleconnor’s big lead, and quite easily took the 1st game by 21-5 over Michael Browne & Tom Foody. In the second Browne came more into it and covered every inch of the Collooney court, and Foody got some nice scores on the right. McLoughlin & Coen were finding it hard to add to their tally, and a reinvigorated Browne & Foody surprised the more experienced Collooney side by taking the second game by 21-15.

Going into the last singles match Castleconnor still led by 20 points (68-48). Collooney were relying on Michael McGee to pull the game out of the fire, and straight away he brought the battle to Joe Gorman from Castleconnor taking the 1st game by 21-12. Joe Gorman had a great start to the second game going 8-0 up and just needed 2 points for overall victory. McGee, the former Royal County handball player dug deep and in true Meath style put in a storming finish. Gorman only managed 1 further score as McGee took the second game by 21-9. At the very end Collooney had a narrow escape just pipping Castleconnor by 1 point, the final score in favour of Collooney was 90 – 89. Collooney now go onto the Provincial final where they will meet the winners of Roscommon or Galway at a date and venue yet to be confirmed.

U16 League updates

U-16 FL : Castleconnor 3-6 Geevagh 0-11

The under 16 team had two league games last week.

On Monday evening Easkey were the visitors to Corballa. In terrible conditions a hard fought and close game was seen all the way through. Castleconnor came out eventual winners 1-7 to 1-5.

On Friday evening at Shamrock Gaels Park, Coola the team took on Geevagh. This again, was a well contested game with both sides producing good spells of football.

Geevagh were first off the mark but Shane Wright got Castleconnor’s first score after seven minutes. A soccer style goal and a point in quick succession from Stephen Curley put the team ahead. Immediately after Geevagh had their own goal chance but blazed the ball wide. The sides exchanged scores again and a Kevin McDonnell point after a surging run on 20 minutes put us ahead by the narrowest of margins. Geevagh leveled matters just before the interval to leave it at 1-4 to 0-7.

Anthony Kilcullen got the side going with a point after just one minute of the second period. Castleconnor’s second goal came from Curley yet again, after an excellent pass from James Flynn. Geevagh also created good chances and took their scores. A short 45’ on 16 minutes resulted in another Kevin McDonnell score and now the red and whites led by two. This was cut back to a point (2-6 to 0-11) and the last five minutes to the game was nip and tuck.

In the last minute a high ball was sent into the Geevagh goalmouth and Keith Earlis was there to flick in the resultant kick. Final score: Castleconnor 3-6 Geevagh 0-11.

Team on duty: Brian Feeney, Liam Naughton, Keith Foody, Ronan Barrett, Anthony Kilcullen, Shane Wright, Martin Foody, Keith Earlis, Eoin Flynn, Kevin McDonnell, James Flynn, Ciaran Kilcullen, Stephen Curley.

The team take on Cloonacool on Wednesday evening away.

Div 5 Rd 2: Castleconnor 1-2 v Enniscrone 3-15, May 5 2009

Though the lads tried their best it was just another one of those days for the team. With a lot of changes from their last outing the team formation is still far from settled and getting the mix of old and young is still perplexing.

Enniscrone were out of the blocks early but the majority of their scores at the break were from frees, an indictment of the pressure the backs were under. Our solitary point in the half came from Brian Curley after good buld up. The half time score was 1-10 v 0-1.

The start of the second half was a lot better for the team with more aggression and fight being shown and John Cullen scored a very good point after a penetrating run. There was a lack of scores in the second half as the defence realised it was better to not foul.  However a Gerry Holmes goal was the middle of 3 goals with Enniscrone getting two.

The teams next game is versus Bunninadden at home the weekend of May 17th.

Team. B.Kelly, U.McGranahan, Brendan Howley, P.Flynn, Brian Howley, D.Fox, D.Howley, J.Cullen, N.Fox, D.Gillmartin, B.Curley, F.Barrett, B.Judge, P.Maughan, M.Langan. Subs: J.McGuinness, D.Ruane, G.Holmes, T.Tuffy

U16 League: Castleconnor 3-6 v Geevagh 0-11, May1 2009

The under 16 team travelled to Coola this evening to take on Geevagh in the League.

Final score: Castleconnor 3-06 Geevagh 0-11

Handball Final tonight, May 1 2009

The delayed Connacht Junior C 40 x 20  doubles is set for an exciting finale. In the final will be two doubles pairs from Sligo both from the Castleconnor Club.  It is expected to be an exciting affair. In the final the teams are represented by Tom Foody & Joe Gorman  and Michael Browne & Tomas Tuffy.  In last weekened’s semi-final in Bofield Co. Mayo Foody & Gorman had to pull out all the stops before emerging winners that went the distance. The duo defeated a very strong Galway pairing by 21-20, 20-21, 21-14.   Browne & Tuffy overcame Leitrim’s Hazlett & O’Donnell in their semi-final outing.

Both teams have been showing up well in the recent Sligo 40 x 20 league. Michael Browne & Tomas Tuffy were a revelation in the league and will be hard to beat. However Tom Foody & Joe Gorman look the more balanced side and it may well come down to who ever wants to win the Connacht title the most. An entertaining final is in prospect.

U12: Castleconnor 11 v Easkey 8

The under 12 team got their league campaign off to a winning start over neighbours Easkey at Corballa on Tuesday last.

Entering the final quarter the scores were locked at 8 scores a piece but in the final 12 minutes we took our chances with scores from Sean Carrabine, Luke Munnelly and Lewis Beardshaw.

The team management of Tony Carrabine, Sean Gordon and Brendan Howley with help from Barry Judge were delighted with the result.

Panel: Kevin Howley, David Ginty, Tom Foody, Cian Barrins, Sean Carrabine, Eoin Kilcullen, Luke Munnelly, Stephen Durkan, Lewis Beardshaw, Elliot Beardshaw, Paul Flynn,

Final score was 0-11 to 0-8.

This Tuesday evening(April 28th) they take on St. Farnan’s at Templeboy.

Div 1 Rd7: Castleconnor 0-5 v Eastern Harps 0-16, April 28 2009

We welcomed county champions Eastern Harps to a wind and rain swept Corballa on Sunday for the seventh round of the league. We played with the strong breeze in the first half but turned over losing 8 v 3 with the highlight a penalty save from Colin Gordon. The second half we upped the intensity considerably. We had a penalty well saved from the visitors keeper but it would have made no difference to the final result of 0-16 v 0-5.

Team: C.Gordon, B.Howley, J.Tuffy, P.McGuinness, R.Healy, N.Fox, K.Naughton, P.Naughton, P.Kilcullen, D.Fox, J.O’Regan, B.Curley, P.Maughan, F.Barrett, N.Judge. Sub Brian Howley.

Next week we have Curry as visitors.

Div 5 Rd 2: Castleconnor 0-7 v St.Johns 3-17, April 27 2009

Castleconnor travelled to Carraroe on Friday evening to take on St.Johns. Despite a good start a bad mistake by our keeper gave Johns the first score and from that point they did not hit a wide till the second half. A more spirited performance in the second half did not stop the score being wide losing by 3-17 v 0-8.

Team: B.Barrins, D.Gilmartin, K.Naughton, J.Cullen, B.Howley(0-1), D.Fox, D.Howley, C.Gordon(0-1), N.Fox(0-1), M.Langan(0-2), B.Judge(0-2), P.Maughan, S.Feeney, U.McGranahan,

Next weekend we travel to Quigabar to take on Enniscrone on Sunday at 3pm.

Minor League semi: Castleconnor 3-5 v Shamrock Gaels 1-13, April 27 2009

Castleconnor played Shamrock Gaels in the semi final of the minor B league on Thursday evening in Corballa. The team was hit with the loss of John McDonnell and Ronan Keane with injury. This was an exciting game with the result in doubt right into injury time. The first half was a tight affair even though we had the breeze we had a first half penalty from Paul Sweeney to keep us in the game.

Shamrock Gaels started the second half on a flyer and were 4 points up with 15 minutes gone. Then Castleconnor hit for 2 goals in a 5 minute spell, the first a penalty from Paul Sweeney and the second a long range effort from Barry Judge. The Gaels narrowed the deficit to 1 and then leveled but Barry Judge put the homeside one up with 2 minutes to play. Shamrock Gaels finished strongly with 3 points in the last number of minutes to progress to the final with a scoreline of 3-5 v 1-13.

Team: A.Hallinan, K.Earlis, S.Kilgannon, D.Howley, K.Maye, M.Foody, D Carrabine(0-1), J.McGuinness, P Sweeney(2P,1) B Judge(1-2) B Curley (0-1), M.Crawford.

The visitors reduced the deficit to just a point after six minutes of the second period, but Castleconnor responded immediately with a Patrick McGuinness point. Another Paul Kilcullen free put the team ahead by three but Coolera weren’t long responding with a point of their own. This was to be the visitors last score of this round 5 league encounter.

Our rearguard showed great determination with David Carrabine, John Tuffy and Patrick McGuinness excelling in that area.

Hanball: Castleconnor lose out narrowly, March 31 2009

St. Mary's crowned Sligo league 40 x 20 champions 2009
From Sligo Handball Website:

Seamus Duffy & Pat O'Sullivan played outstanding handball that helped St. Mary's to defeat a below strength Castleconnor in the inaugural Sligo Handball League 40 x 20 final played in St. Mary's last evening, writes Michael McGee

Michael McMorrow & Bill Carney St. Mary's were pittled against Castleconnor's Michael Browne & Tomas Tuffy.  This was a very close game throughout with scores level on no less than 5 occasions before Castleconnor pulled away for an 21-16 win in game one.

Bill Carney St. Mary's natural left hander played very solid throughout and Michael McMorrow keeping shots on the roof kept Castleconnor on the back foot for long spells in this game. Castleconnor's Michael Brown a very skillfull player was always dangerous when giving the opportunity's to put away winners.

St. Mary's looked well on the way to win the second game when leading by 17-8. However Castleconnor put in a storming finish and drew level at 19-19.  Scores were also level at 20-20. Castleconnor marvellous comeback was rewarded when they took the second game by the minimum 21-20 leaving Castleconnor with a 6 point advantage going into the last doubles match

St. Mary's second doubles team of Seamus Duffy & Pat O'Sullivan proved too strong for Castleconnor's Oliver Fleming & Joe Gorman. The St. Mary's duo  started like an express train and  blitzed Castleconnor by 21-1 in the first game. Needing just 8 points for overall victory they set about their task in workmanlike fashion. Any faint hopes of a Castleconnor revival were quickly dispelled early in the second game.  Before long  St. Mary's had achieved their target.  Eventhough Fleming & Gorman came more into the match Duffy & O'Sullivan had to much nous and craft and finished the stronger winning by 21-7. The overall score was St. Mary's 78- Castleconnor 50.

Chairman Martin Golden presented the trophies to the winners and runners-up and complimented both teams on a fine exhibition of handball.

St. Mary's  captain Michael McMorrow was justifiably pleased with his team's efforts.  "The quality of handball was very good  and it is great to see  a number of younger players coming through. Hopefully we will have more competitions like this in the future", said McMorrow.

U14 League: Castleconnor 3-8 v Tourlestrane 1-2, March29, 2009

The under 14 team made it two wins from two in Division 1 of the league on Friday evening last. The team had a comprehensive victory over visitors Tourlestrane in terrible conditions.

Playing against the elements in the opening period the team worked hard and this was to be seen on the score board as they lead 2-1 to 1-2 at the interval. In the second half the defence were pushed up the field as the strong breeze prevented Tourlestrane from getting into their scoring half. We used this advantage and managed to score 1-7 to finish strong.

Final Score from a windswept Corballa was Castleconnor 3-8 Tourlestrane 1-2.

The team continue to train and take on Tubbercurry at home on Friday evening at 6.30pm.

Team on duty was: Arthur Beardshall, Jason Earlis, Eoin Kent, Keith Foody, Damien Barrett, Conor Judge, Cian Barrins,Kevin McDonnell, Shane Wright, James Flynn, Stephen Curley,

Conor Gallagher, Matthew Cullen, Kieran Kilcullen, Enda Kilcullen.

Div 1: Castleconnor 0-6 v Tourlestrane 2-11, March 29, 2009

The senior team were defeated by Tourlestrane for the second consecutive week - this time in round 4 of the Division 1 league.

In greasy conditions, Tourlestrane, the home side got off to a brighter start and looked stronger throughout.

Michael Langan was the first to get a score on the board with a fine free from about 35m out. After 15 minutes there was just a score between the sides at 1-03 to 0-3

with a Brian Curley free and a great point from captain John Tuffy. However the home side broke through our rearguard regularly after this which left the score at 2-6 to 0-3 at the

break.

Just after ten minutes in the second half corner back Ronan Keane received a bad ankle injury after accidentally turning on it. The second half was disappointing as the team only mustered up another

three points to Tourlestranes's five. Final Score was Castleconnor 0-6 Tourlestrane 2-11. We would like to wish a speedy recovery to Ronan Keane on his ankle injury and we also acknowledge the hospitality

that we received from the officials in Tourlestrane. Next week the team take on Coolera Strandhill in the next round of the competition at home.

Team on duty was: Barnes Kelly, Paul Hackett, Patrick Naughton,Ronan Keane, Patrick McGuinness, John Tuffy, David Fox, Paul Kilcullen, Michael Langan, David Carrabine, John O'Regan, Frank Barrett,

Brian Curley, Norman Fox, Alan Cawley. Subs: Colin Gordon for Kelly, Paul Maughan for Ronan Keane.

 SFL Div 1: Castleconnor 1-13 v Tubbercurry 2-15, March 3, 2009

Our senior team made the trip to south Sligo again this weekend for the meeting with Tubbercurry in the division 1 league. This was an excellent game for supporters and full of excitement. We lead until the 60th minute when the home team equalized and then in injury time managed to score 1-2. We lead at the break by 1-8 v 1-3 with Niall Judge getting the goal after a flick on from Norman Fox.

We had a strong breeze in the first half but we extended the lead in the second half and looked good for the win until the last number of injury time minutes.

Yet again the youngsters showed great promise with the team containing 5 teenagers. It was a harsh lesson for them on the realities of senior football. Next weekend we are at home to Curry in the Pick n Choose league.

Training continues on Tuesday at 8pm.

Team: B.Barrins, R.Keane, J.Tuffy, P.Hackett, P.McGuinness, M.Langan, D.Fox, P.Kilcullen, P.Naughton, Brian Howley, A.Cawley, B.Curley, N.Judge, N.Fox, F.Barrett. Subs: B.Kelly.

Feilé na nÓg County Final: Castleconnor 2-10 v St.Marys 2-9, Feb 23 2009

Castleconnor created history on Sunday afternoon in Markievicz Park when they won there first ever Feile final. The conditions were close to perfect with a breeze towards the Colloney end. St. Marys had the advantage of this in the first half but it was our boys who were on the mark straight from the throw in when Matthew Cullen had the first score of the game. St.Marys responded with 3 points in a three minutes spell but Stephen Curley responded to put the minimum between the teams after being put through by Matthew Cullen after 13 minutes.

Yet again Marys put 3 points on the board by the 25th minute but the last five minutes proved to be a golden time for our lads with a point from Kieran Kilcullen after a pass from Stephen Curley, who then put through Kevin McDonnell for another point. We were dominant at theis time and had a wide right afterwards. When Marys broke out it was intercepted by the half back line and three kick passes later Mathew Cullens deft sidefoot flick put Kieran Kilcullen in for the games first goal that left us leading on a scoreline of 1-4 v 0-6 at the break.

The second half was twon minutes old when Marys equalised but two points, one apiece from Stephen Curley and Matthew Cullen restored the lead. At this stage the game was a real ding-dong battle where everyone was putting their shoulders to the wheel. Marys again scored a point and then we hit three points between the 42nd and 44th minute coming from Kevin McDonnell and two from Stephen Curley, his first one after a fine catch. Marys then had their own hot spell when they scored 1-1 to equalise in the 47th minute.

Matthew Cullen steadied the ship and restore our one point advantage with a point from play after being put through by Curley in the 50th minute. Then seemingly disaster when in the 53rd minute a long range free from Marys found it’s way to the net after a mixup in the defence. The lads did not panic though and showed their inner strength when they worked it up the field for the decisive score. Kieran Kilcullen went very close after a great catch and the Marys goal survived one or two more chances but eventually in the 57th minute a string of passes ended with Kevin McDonnell putting Stephen Curley through where he slid the ball into the corner.

The big travelling support went crazy but they were put to the pin of their collars in the last three minutes plus two minutes of injury time but when Kevin McDonnell cleared the ball with the last klck of the game, the scenes of unrestrained joy told you the historic significance of what this group of players and management had achieved, we were county champions for 2009 on a final score of 2-10 v 2-9.

All players played their part . Arthur in goals was outstanding and his save in the last minute will be remembered. Keith Foody was as steady as always with Liam Naughton doing his job in his usual quiet and efficient manner. Eoin Kent would be close to man of the match especially when he moved out to the wing. Jason Earlis and Cian Barrins showed their pace on a number of occasions with Conor Judge controlling the centre. In the middle little and large Shane Wright and Kevin McDonnell provided a great link to the forwards from defence and did their bit in defence also. Conor Gallagher showed great tenacity whilst Stephen Curley and Matthew Cullen were the twin threat in the forwards every team loves to have. The inside line did their bit with Damian Barrett showing all the time and James Flynn a constant threat from kickouts whilst Kieran Kilcullens ability to catch high ball and convert was of the highest order. Sean Carrabine entered the fray and alongside the other youthful subs of Lewis Beardshaw and Enda Kilcullen played a significant part in bringing the team to the final when both Kevin and Matthew were out injured before the Christmas break.

Of course the management team of Jim Kent, Frank Barrett and Declan Flynn work can not be under-estimated. The number of sessions that took place under floodlights since the holidays was amazing along with the background preparations was superb. It must have been a strange day for Jim in particular in a county final against his old club who he won numerous county titles with. The club would also acknowledge the work put in by Michael Langan, Barnes Kelly and Barry Judge at u12 level. Thanks to the big number of supporters who not only attended the final but all games.

Definitely February 22th 2009 will go down as one of the biggest days in the clubs history

Team ; Arthur Beardshaw, Keith Foody, Liam Naughton, Eoin Kent, Jason Earlis, Conor Judge, Cian Barrins, Kevin McDonnell, Shane Wright, matthew Cullen, Stephen Curley, Conor Gallagher, James Flynn, Kieran Kilcullen, Damian Barrett. Subs: Sean Carrabine, Enda Kilcullen, Lewis Beardshaw

Div 1: Castleconnor 1-7 v Curry 1-16, Feb 22, 2009

A youthful team made a losing start to this years division 1 league in an away fixture. Curry played with the breeze in the first half and by the break had built up a commanding lead of 12 v 1-2 with the goal coming from Karl Tuffy after he intercepted a defensive pass.

We started the second half well with a point from Niall Judge but a goal for the home team midway through the second half put an end to our ambitions. Next week we are away again in South Sligo to Tubbercurry on Sunday at 12pm.

Team B.Barrins, B.Howley, J.Tuffy, P.Hackett, P.McGuinness, P.Naughton, D.Fox, P.Kilcullen, M.Langan, B.Curley, K.Tuffy(1-2), C.Barrett, N.Judge(0-3), N.Fox, D.Carrabine. Subs; F.Barrett, R.Keane, B.Kelly, B.Howley, P.Maughan

 MFL: Castleconnor 5-10 v St.Michaels 0-6, Feb22 2009

The minor team recorded their second successive win of the season with a comprehensive victory of St. Michael’s at Ballintogher on Saturday. St. Michael’s were quick to start and rushed into a three point lead. That lead was relinquished soon after as the team responded quickly, resulting in two well finished goals. This kept us in touch and we led by 2-5 to 0-5 at the interval.

The second half was touch and go but we ran out well deserved victors playing nice, fast flowing football. The team continue to train during the week and have no game this coming weekend. However the management hope to get a challenge match. Final Score was 5-10 to 0-6.

Team on duty was: Anthony Kilcullen, Keith Earlis, Kevin Maye, Martin Foody, Ronan Keane, Diarmuid Howley, David Carrabine, John McGuinness, John McDonnell, Barry Judge, Brian Curley, Paul Sweeney, Darragh Gilmartin. Subs: Ryan Foody for Darragh Gilmartin

Pick n Choose Rd 1: Castleconnor 0-8 v Ballymote 3-8, Feb 17th 2009

The year started for the seniors on Saturday evening with an away fixture in Ballymote in the Pick n Choose competition.

The first half was a shambles for our lads with the concession of three very bad goals with the first in the first minute with the webmaster totally at fault.

However the team showed good spirit in the second half. Next weekend we are away in the first round of the league away to Curry at 3:30pm.

Team: B.Barrins, R.Keane, J.Tuffy, B.Howley, F.Barrett, P.McGuinness, D.Carrabine, M.Langan, N.Fox, B.Curley, A.Cawley, B.Howley, P.Maughan, B.Kelly, N.Judge.

Congrats to John Tuffy who was named as senior captain for 2009

Scór na nÓg County final update, Jan 12 2009

On Sunday Katie Reape and Marianne Foody represented Castleconnor at the county finals of scór.

They competed in the poetry section and were unlucky not to come away as winners.

Never-the-less they did a great job and well done to them on reaching the final and we hope to see them back again next year!
