Pella

The pella season has finished for the moment as teams move outdoors. There were great turnouts at all the sessions and below are pics of the u8 and u10 teams that took part.

U12
The U12 team start the season with a match this evening versus Eastern Harps. Throw in is at 6:30pm so hopefully you can make it out to support.

U14
The u14 team are in action on Thursday evening when they have Coolaney/Mullinabreena as visitors to Corballa in the second round of the league. Throw in 6:30pm

U16
The team had a bye this week but are down to play away to Tourlestrane next Monday evening at 7pm. There will be training on Thursday evening.

Minor
We had a challenge against ArdMoy McHales (Ardagh, Moygownagh, Lahardane) in Moygownagh last Thursday evening going down to a scoreline of 3-14 v 3-9. This is a very young team but after a shaky first 10 minutes came right back into the game.

Senior
The start of the league season is upon us and the team travel to Buninnadden on Sunday afternoon with a throw in of 1pm in the county division 2 league.

County scene
Hard luck to Seán , Jason and the Sligo U21 team who lost out to Galway in the Connacht final on Saturday evening after extra time. It was an excellent game despite the result.
Kevin Mc had a better result on Sunday when winning against Louth, however David Carrabine and Sinead Naughton lost to Leitrim and Clare respectively.
Micheál Cahill and the Sligo minors lost their first game on Saturday to neighbours Mayo in the Connacht league. Surprisingly there is not one Mayo player from the surrounding parishes on their panel. Mayo left it late on Sunday but came through in the end versus Donegal.
Oisín Flynn and Liam Donnegan were part of the Sligo u15 team that defeated Fermanagh on Saturday afternoon.
And referee Barry Judge was running the sideline in Carrick on Sat for Leitrim v Waterford and the sideline official for Galway v Kildare on Sun, even getting onto the Sunday night tv schedule
😉

Where are they now?!
2 past players (but still have something to offer no doubt
😊
) were out and about at the weekend with showjumper Richard Howley home for the weekend from the UK and Patrick Cleary on Ocean FM. Richard has had a very successful year winning a number of showjumping grand prixs in Ireland, UK and Germany.
Patrick was interviewed by Ocean FM at the start of Organ donor week this week. Go to Ocean Fm to hear it back and remember organ donor week- get your card

Handball
Rachel Coggins was unfortunate losing an U12  Connacht final on Sunday. Eilish Quinn is currently preparing for her Connacht final later in the month. Good luck Eilish

Congrats
A big congratulations to Paul, Louise and Matthew Kilcullen who welcomed baby Niall into their family last week. Also to Michelle and Matt Geraghty on their son Seán (or is it Seánín like his uncle).

A great night was had by all at the race night which was organised very successfully by the senior team. 10 races, lots of prize and plenty of craic. Thanks to all who took part, sponsored horses and races and those who attended and helped out.

Lotto
The lotto draw for €1200 took place on Saturday in Mahoneys. Numbers drawn were 4 7 28 30 and there was no winner. There was one match 3 winner Stokane Parents Association on a yearly ticket. Congrats. Next draw will take place in Muddy Burns on April 15th (Easter Saturday)

U10
Our u10 teams provided the halftime entertainment at the Sligo v Offaly NFL game on Sunday in Markievicz Park. Our opposition was Drumcliffe/Rosses Point. Well done to all the boys and girls involved who put on a great show of skills.

U12
The u12 team are training as they prepare for their first game which is next week at home to Eastern Harps. Good luck to all involved.

U14
The team travelled to Ballintogher to take on St.Michaels for their first game of 2017. Missing a few regulars and their first outing of the year told and they went down to a strong home team 6-11 v 1-3

Intermediate
Saturday evening in Corballa the lads had their first outing of 2017 in the Benson cup versus St.Farnans. The ground committee had the pitch in immaculate condition and a good crowd came for the game in the sunny conditions. Starting with 6 lads making their senior debut and a seventh coming on it was a baptism of fire for the youngsters. However they showed they will be here for the long road as after a tentative start they brought themselves back into the game after a bad opening 20 mins. We went down 3-13 v 0-9. No game this weekend. Thanks to Chrissie Flynn for the pics of the game

U16
The team continue to train but have a bye in this weeks league

Minor
As there are no u17s in the club the older minors are training with the senior lads whilst joining with the older u16 lads for one session a week. A challenge on Thursday night in Moygownagh under lights at 8 versus Ardagh

Schools scene
Well done to all the lads in Jesus and Mary who won their Connacht rugby final v Foxford last week. Also to the lads in St.Muredachs who did the same at their level of senior rugby.

County Scene

Well first all congrats to the Sligo U21 squad including our own Jason Earlis and Seán Carrabine who reached the Connacht final. Seán was all over the papers and social media on Thursday. The Connacht final takes place on Saturday evening in Markievicz park at 6pm with Micheál Cahill and the Sligo minors taking the field against Mayo beforehand in the Connacht minor league. Good luck all.
A bad weekend for our other county ballers with Kevin McDonnell and David Carrabine losing with Sligo and London but Mayos Sligo man Tom Parsons scored the decisive score in the Mayo win over Tyrone

County scene

Not a good weekend for the local teams or players with Kevin Mc and the Sligo lads going down by 3 in Longford, David Carrabine and London losing to Wexford and Mayo losing to Cavan though a certain Cavan clubman wanted me to say how it was a great feeling going into work yesterday morning!
However Sinead Naughton was on a winning team when the Sligo ladies defeated Kildare in the midlands in the national league on Saturday.

Condolences
It was a great shock when the word reached us on Saturday evening of the untimely death of Peter Naughton. The club send their condolences to Mary, Patrick, Lorraine and Kieran, grandchildren and all the Naughton and Gordon families. Peter, I think it would be fair to say wouldn't have been known for his footballing skills but he put us all to shame in December 2015 when he won the Player of the match award at our annual charity match (Kicking for Kidneys) that year. Slán agus beannacht Dé Peter

U16

Well the lads produced one hell of a performace on Sunday which anyone that was there was extremely proud of. Firstly thanks to all parents who offered lifts to the team. It was great to be over-subscribed. As with our challenge game last week we were slow to get going and trailed 1-9 v 0-4 at the break. The second half every single one of them played as if their lives depended on it and the great thing was the calmness they went about the job. Having leveled with 5 minutes to go following goals from Ronan Wilson and Eli O'Neill and a rake of points from Oisín Flynn, they did not panic when they went behind again by a point and Eli was on hand to guide the last chance to the net from a long range free by Oisín.
To be honest on the sideline it was so exciting in the second half I did not know the score in the end or who scored for us!. Team, Liam Donnegan, Daniel Ruane, Fergal Boland, Gordon McHale, Patrick Cooney, Eli O'Neill, Colm Naughton, Ronan Wilson, Andrew Blakeney, James Tully, Oisín Flynn, Rian Winters, Dáire Barrins, Matthew Blakeney, Owen Gillard. Subs Cathal Feeney, Eoin Duffy, James Rafter
Training on Thursday evening at 7.
These lads have never topped a group so I was sent this screenshot by a number of them last night
😊

Good win for Sligo against Laois which was a good come from behind victory. The less said about the Mayo forwards in the Dublin game the better I'd say.
Well done also to David Carrabine who I missed out on last week where he scored a goal for London in their match with Wicklow. This weekend he was also involved in their match versus Limerick

Presentation and celebration night
A very enjoyable night in Muddys was held on Saturday with a good crowd present. It was a busy night with first Geraldine Ruane and family receiving her cheque for €8200 she won in our club lotto a few weeks back.

After this, the presentation to Western Care Beehive Centre Ballina of the proceeds from the Christmas charity match was made to Joe Brett. A figure of €6700 was raised which was a phenomal figure, so thanks to all who supported it, sponsored or participated or helped out in any way and especially to the organising committee. As Joe said it will be put to go use as they are moving from their old location on Crossmolina road to a new premises currently.

We then continued to celebrate our victories in the Sligo club ground of the year 2016 and Connacht club ground of the year 2016 whilst the current lotto draw was taking place which turned out to be a winning night also with the numbers of 4 11 17 22 drawn and Aoibhe Barrins Fiddaun (a yearly ticket as was Geraldines)the sole winner of €2400. Congrats Aoibhe (and remember to take out the family at least once on it)
