U13 Feilé na nÓg semi-final: Castleconnor 3-10 v Ballisodare 5-2, Dec 7, 2008
The under 13 team progressed to the final of the Feile competition after a hard earned victory over a gallant Ballisodare side at a windswept Corballa on Sunday.
This encounter was a replay of last years under 12 A final, when we came out on top with a two point victory. The final score was 3-10 to 5-2, the margin of two points also been repeated. The underfoot ground conditions were excellent considering the weather as a thrill a minute epic was played in cold breezy conditions. A great crowd gathered in the stand to watch.
The team played with the wind in the opening period and were two points ahead at the interval, 2-7 to 3-2. Playing against the elements in the second half, the team had to work very hard as they only led by two. The second half was a very lively contest as both sides gave it their all. Both sides put up six points worth of scores each, Ballisodare hitting the net twice as we scored 1-3.
Team : Arthur Beardshall, Keith Foody, Liam Naughton, Eoin Kent, Jason Earlis, Conor Judge, Cian Barrins, Kevin McDonnell, Shane Wright, Matthew Cullen, Kieran Kilcullen, Conor Gallagher, James Flynn, Stephen Curley, Eoin Kilcullen. Sub Lewis Beardshall

U13 Feilé na nÓg quarter final; Castleconnor 5-7 v Tubbercurry 2-6, Nov 17, 2008
Castleconnor 5-07 -V- 2-06 Tubbercurry
The under 13 team have made it through to the semi final of this years Feile competition with a hard fought victory over Tubbercurry on Sunday.
Calm conditions made for a good game of football and the team led 3-4 to 2-1 at the interval.
Tubbercurry started off well putting the first score up on the board. We were well on top after hitting the net twice but a good comeback with two goals in quick succession from the South Sligo side meant there was little beween the sides.
A fortunate goal for us minutes before the break meant we were six up at half time. In the second half we went up by 10 but that lead was cut back to six points with four Tubbercurry points without reply.
The team were playing good football and responded well to this threat and this was as close as Tubbercurry got to us. Good displays of flowing football were on display from both sides, and we will be hoping to improve more for our semi final clash. Details are to be confirmed.

U13 League: Reports on victories over Enniscrone and St.Farnans, Oct 8, 2008
The under 13 team got their campaign off to a great start defeating Enniscrone Kilglass 8-13 to 5-06 at Quigabar on Tuesday last. The team started off well scoring 1-3 to Enniscrone’s one point. However Enniscrone came back into the game and led for a good ten minute spell. After this Castleconnor took control and looked to have the better balance throughout the game.
On Saturday evening in round 2 against St. Farnan’s at Corballa the team had a convincing win scoring 6-16 to St. Farnan’s 0-06. The team led from start to finish and were never threatened. Brilliant performances were on display throughout with Stephen Curley creating havoc in the St. Farnan’s rearguard. Conor Gallagher and sub Arthur Beardshall got one point each, as Shane Wright and Damien Barrett bagged 1-1 each. James Flynn scored 1-2 while Curley got 3-10. The defence stood their ground with Conor Judge, Eoin Kent and Keith Foody putting in spirited performances, and new goalkeeper Kevin McDonnell keeping a clean sheet.

Minor B Champ Replay: Castleconnor 0-11 v Mullinabreena 1-10 AET, 26 Sep, 2008
First game
This game was played on Sunday evening last in Corballa where we simply left the game behind us. We were Leading 0-6 to 0-0 after 20 minutes and CM pulled a goal back before the interval. We were first off the mark in the second half but CM fought back to draw level. We had chances to put the game in our favour but we failed to take them.
Quarter Final Replay: The team made their exit from the B Championship after been defeated in extra time by two points in Achonry last Monday evening.
Castleconnor led at the interval 0-5 to 0-2 but a second half CM goal meant that we were chasing the game from then on. Trailing by a point in the dying seconds of normal time we snatched back an equalising point. Extra time meant 10 minutes a half, and it was dusk. CM took the lead in the first period going ahead by three points and they never relinquished that lead as they had the edge on the day.
This finishes the minor football season for 2008. The team competed and fulfilled all fixtures in the B league and championship.
In the championship campaign we defeated neighbours Enniscrone/Kilglass in a pulsating encounter at Quigabar and after received a w/o from Ballymote. In the quarter final against Coolaney Mullinabreena the sides could not be separated and even in the replay we needed more time but fell short of the hurdle.
Thank you to all involved with the squad; management team of Colin Gordon, Noel Morrisson, John Judge and Kevin Finan for their time throughout the year.
U16B Championship FINAL: Castleconnor 0-8 v St.Farnans 2-9, 26 Sep, 2008
The under 16 team travelled to Markievicz Park on Thursday evening last to take on St. Farnan’s in the B FC Final. In calm but greasy conditions the team started off well and it was a close fought first half. In this very important game we failed to deliver when it came to taking our chances. In games like these you need some luck, and unfortunately we received everything but. We trailed at half time by a point. (0-4 to 0-3).
The second half was a different game as St. Farnan’s took over. Even though, all credit to our lads who gave a very spirited performance and never threw in the towel until the final whistle. The team will feel hard done by, as we didn’t perform to our potential on the day.
The team and management of Michael McDonnell, John McGuinness and Paul Kilcullen deserve great credit for their hard work and effort over the past year. Earlier in the year the team captured the division 2B League title over Easkey and it was a great achievement to reach the Final of the B Championship. Thanks to all the supporters who came out during the year to support this great bunch of lads and to the players themselves for their effort in training.
U-16 Panel: Anthony Kilcullen, Keith Earlis, Ronan Barrett, Martin Foody, John McGuinness, Kevin McDonnell, Stephen Kilgannon, John McDonnell, Barry Judge, Paul Sweeney, Darragh Gilmartin, Stephen Curley, Matthew Crawford, Keith Jacob, Eoin Flynn, Richard Howley.
Minor Champ Quarter-final: Castleconnor 0-10 v Mulinabreena 2-4,Sep 10, 2008
Leading coming up to the short whistle by 0-6 v 0-0 an attempted block ended up being deflected past our keeper. Another messy affair for the second goal in the second half kept the visitors hopes alive and they scored the equaliser with 2 minutes to go. A last ditch free from John McDonnell on the sideline hit the post.
The replay takes place in Achonry on Monday evening
U16B Champ semi-final: Castleconnor 3-9 v Mullinabreena 3-8, Sep 10, 2008
The under 16 team made it into the Championship Final against St. Farnan’s after a hard fought victory at the hands of Coolaney/Mullinabreena on Monday evening last in Dromard.
An exciting game of football was played on front of a good crowd. We got a good start and led 0-3 to 0-1 after a few minutes before CM rattled our net. We didn’t panic and went ahead before the interval (2-6 to 1-5).
It was hell for leather in the second half with both teams exchanging scores. With a minute left on the clock we were five points ahead and CM replied with a point followed by a goal. However this was not enough to see off our lads in a less than convincing performance, and they will be hoping to put a few things right before the final on September 11th.
A. Kilcullen, R. Barrett, K. Earlis, M. Foody, J. McGuinness, K. McDonnell, J. McDonnell, S. Kilgannon, D. Gilmartin, P. Sweeney, B. Judge, M. Crawford, S. Curley.
Subs: Keith Jacob, Eoin Flynn.
SFC quarter final: Castleconnor 0-6 v Coolera/Strandhill 1-8, Sep 10, 2008
Coolera started in blistering fashion and were through on goal in the very first minute when our keeper was called into action and from the resulting save man of the match Alan Costello pointed. Coolera stretched the lead to 3 points after 10 minutes but we bounced back with points from Karl Tuffy, Kevin Langan and Alan Cawley. Coolera struck two more points and then on the half time whistle got the decisicve score with a super goal to lead at the break 1-5 0-3.
We had the first two attacks of the half but both finished as wides. Coolera scored a long range free to extend the lead. The decisiive minute in the half was the 10th minute when Kevin Langan scythed through the Coolera defense but his goal bound shot (which had beat the goalie) struck the underside of the crossbar, and to add salt to the wounds Coolera drove downfield to score their second point of the half. Pat Naughton scored our first point of the half to narrow the gap and two Paul Kilcullen points narrowed further but Coolera finished with the final score to win 1-8 v 0-6.
This was a disappointing display with a number of the lads not performing to their ability.
Team: B.Barrins, C.Barrett, P.Naughton, B.Howley, R.Healy, J.Tuffy, D.Fox, M.Langan, K.Tuffy, A.Cawley, K.Langan, P.McGuinness, D.Carrabine, J.Cawley, P.Kilcullen. Subs: N.Fox, T.Cawley, R.Keane
U16 B Champ: Castleconnor 4-8 v Easkey 1-7, Aug25, 2008
The U16 team progressed to the semi final of the under 16 ‘B’ Championship with a comprehensive win over neighbours Easkey on Thursday evening last. With only ten or so seconds into the game we had already hit the onion bag which was a very good start. This was a great confidence boost and two more goals in the first half and three points meant we had a good advantage at the break(3-3 to 0-4).
The second half was just like the first, we were more competitive and put together some nice moves. The final score was 4-8 to 1-7 in our favour.
The semi final has been put back to September 1st as the other quarter final between St. Mary’s and Coolaney/Mullinabreena finished all square.
Minor Champ: Castleconnor 4-10 v Enniscrone 2-14, 18 Aug 2008
The minor team overcame Enniscrone/Kilglass in the first round of this year’s U18 ‘B’ FC in an enthralling encounter played at Quigabar on Monday evening week last.
This thrill a minute epic saw great football on display from both sides.
Castleconnor led 1-6 to 0-5 at the interval and the elements swung in Enniscrone’s favour ten minutes into the second period, after they started the half in emphatic fashion. Castleconnor now trailed by 6 points.
Fortunately for the team and supporters, the team kept their heads and fought back and three second half goals saw the team on their way to victory in style.
Final Score: Castleconnor 4-10 Enniscrone/Kilglass 2-14.
Round 2 against Ballymote has been provisionally put back until Wednesday 27th.
SFC Rd 3: Castleconnor 1-7 v St.Farnans 1-7, Aug 11, 2008
Castleconnor played St.Farnans in the final game of the league stages of the SFC in Quigabar on Saturday evening. With both teams already qualified this game was a dead rubber, however there was bragging rights still up for grabs. We got the first score of the game with a Frankie Kelly point but did not score again till the final minute of the half when Farnans scored 1-4.
Down by 5 points at the break we brought the lead down to 1 with 10 minutes to go but Farnans moved it back to three points but with 3 minutes to go Paul Kilcullen drove to the Farnans net to leave the game all square with the score of 1-7 v 1-7.
This was not a good performance from our lads and a lot of improvement will be required before we tackle Coolera/Strandhill in the quarter final on the weekend of August 30th and hopefully some of the long list of injuries will be cleared
Team: B.Barrins, C.Barrett, P.Naughton, B.Howley, R.Healy, J.Tuffy, D.Fox, P.Kilcullen, K.Tuffy, T.Cawley, F.Kelly, P.McGuinness, A.Cawley, K.Langan, D.Carrabine. Subs: N.Fox, B.Foody
U16B Champ: Castleconnor 2-9 v St.Farnans 1-9, Aug 11 2008
The under 16 team took on St. Farnan’s on Thursday evening last in round 2 of the B Championship, group 1. The game took place at our own St. Brendan’s Park in Corballa.
In this eagerly awaited encounter it was the Division 2B league winners, versus the Division 2A winners, St. Farnan’s. This game definitely served up to its expectations. A brilliant, highly competitive game of football was displayed in front of a good crowd, as is always in a west divisional derby. Although been understrength we were the better team showing determination, hunger and desire to win. We started the game in blistering fashion, registering 1-2 without reply.
Playing against a difficult breeze in the first half towards the Sligo end goal, we worked hard by carrying the ball up the field and led 2-5 to 0-5 at the interval. We had worked very hard against the breeze and were leading, this was a great advantage for us in the second half as we played with the elements towards the Ballina end goal, thus leaving the favourites with it all to do in the second period. In an intriguing second half both sides traded scores.
St. Farnan’s narrowed the gap to three but we responded quickly with four points in quick succession. St. Farnan’s did reply with a goal. With the score at 2-9 to 1-9 in our favour, the Templeboy based side tried their best to break through for another score but our rearguard were having none of it as the blue and whites couldn’t break through to their frustration and there was great celebration at the end in what was a pulsating and thrill-a-minute epic.
In group two-the other west divisional derby between Easkey and Enniscrone/Kilglass finished in Enniscrones favour meaning we play Easkey, the runner up in that group. We finish top of our group, winning both games. We play our rivals Easkey in the quarter final of this years U16 ‘B’ FC in a fortnight. Details TBC.
The team are under the guidance of Michael McDonnell, John McGuinness and Paul Kilcullen.
Team: Anthony Kilcullen, Keith Earlis, Martin Foody, Keith Jacob, Stephen Kilgannon, Darragh Gilmartin, Matthew Crawford, John McDonnell, Paul Sweeney, John McGuinness, Ronan Barrett, Barry Judge, Kevin McDonnell.
U8/U10 matches and training
The two youngest teams of the club had Ardagh as visitors to Corballa last Friday evening for a feast of football. Two competitive matches took place simultaneously with good sporting contests.
Next Friday evening it is hoped that the same format will take place again with the games starting at 7pm.
Div 2 League FINAL: Castleconnor 0-11 v Geevagh 2-15, July 27 2008
Where did it all go wrong. Before the throw in centre back John Tuffy pulled a muscle. He joined Patrick Naughton on the line after his hamstring pull from 2 weeks ago and Alan Cawley who hasn't trained since the last round of the championship.
However Geevagh were more hungry and the league position didn't lie. Geevagh were 1-3 to no score up after 7 minutes, by haltp time that lead remained with the score then 1-7 v 0-4.
At the start of the second half we hit 2 bad wides before Geevagh rattled off 3 points. Then came the killer punch when their centre forward travelled 40metres before rounding the keeper for a tap in.
Despite finishing with a few points it was not a good day and a lot of work needs to be done before we play Farnans in the third round of the championship on Saturday August 9th
Div 2 Rd 14: Castleconnor 0-10 v St.Farnans 2-9, July 14, 2008
The senior team had St.Farnans as visitors for the final round of the division 2 league on Sunday evening. This game had a lot riding on it with it affecting both the promotion and relegation issues in the division and of course with the impending senior championship game between the two teams on the horizon. We got off to a good start but we did not take our early chances. Farnans scored a goal midway through the half and by the half time whistle we were behind by 2.
Early in the second half we were behind by 5 when Farnans took advantage of a quick free to score their second goal. This was the decisive score and from there to the end the visitors controlled the game in all sectors and should have won by more. In the end both teams got the result they wanted as Farnans stayed in division 2 whilst we returned to division 1 after a year out of the division.
We have now qualified for the division 2 final against Geevagh, a team we only got one point out of four during the league. Initially this game was set for next weekend but that may not now be the case.
Team: B.Barrins, B.Howley, C.Barrett, D.Fox, R.Healy, J.Tuffy, P.McGuinness, P.Naughton, P.Kilcullen, T.Cawley, K.Langan, F.Kelly, P.Maughan, N.Fox, D.Carrabine. Subs: J.Cawley, R.Keane, F.Barrett.
Minor League: Castleconnor 2-8 v St.Marys 3-8, July 14 2008
In the last round of the Division 2A league we travelled to Kent Park to take on St. Mary’s last Monday evening week. In good conditions, we started off the brighter going ahead, however this lead was relinquished and we trailed by a point at the interval after we ‘took the foot off the pedal’.
During this period St. Mary’s broke through our rearguard several times, resulting in a goal and a few points.
A very entertaining second half saw both sides exchange scores and it was end to end from here on in. The north Sligo side got another goal and we trailed 2-8 to 1-7. We responded immediately with a goal and a point to leave it all square.
Just when the lads thought the work was done St. Mary’s crashed another goal in the net in the dying moments which saw us lose out on a score of 3-8 to 2-8.
The team continue to train for the B championship. Round 1 takes place on Monday 11th August at 7pm. Fixtures have yet to be confirmed.
Div 2 Rd 13: Castleconnor 0-11 v St.Marys 0-8, July 7 2008
St.Marys were the visitors on Saturday evening to Corballa. This was a tight, tense affair all through the match.
At the half time break we lead by the slender margin of a point 0-6 v 0-5. Our team dug in and fought out for a deserved victory in the end by 0-11 v 0-8.
The win leaves the destination of promotion in our own hands with a victory or draw in our last game ensuring promotion. That game is also at home with a west division derby, St.Farnans visiting Corballa. This is also a dress rehearsal for the next round of the championship.
Team: B.Barrins, B.Howley, C.Barrett, D.Fox, R.Healy(0-1), P.Naughton, P.McGuinness, K.Tuffy, P.Kilcullen(0-1), F.Kelly(0-1), K.Langan(0-5), B.Foody, P.Maughan(0-1), N.Fox(0-2), D.Carrabine. Subs: J.Cawley, F.Barrett
Div 5 Rd 7: Castleconnor 3-6 v Shamrock Gaels 2-19, July 7 2008
The junior team had their last league game on Friday evening when Shamrock Gaels were the visitors to Corballa. After getting off to a slow start we eventually got on the scoreboard with a monster 45 against the strong wind from Barnes Peyton Kelly. It followed this with a penalty conversion after Bart Bonner Barrins goalbound shot was stopped illegally by a defender. Cubby Maughan put over a good point after an assist from Bonner who then put Crouch Howley through for a goal. John Horse Cullen finished the scoring for the half with a monster point after a strong run.after being put through by the ever running Austin Mullarkey
The half time score was 2-3 v 0-10
The visitors pulled away again at the start of the half but then we got back into it with a goal from Cubby after an assist by Crouchie who is still in awe a few days later from the deft flick he got from Bonner Barrins to put him through.
John Mc and the two Naughtons, Kieran and Alan were doing their best to rebuff the visitors with young Maye usting up the field on occassion. With Frank and Foxy beginning to motor around the middle hopes were high. With ten minutes to go in the game we were level with points from Peyton Kelly and Cubby Maughan but the younger and fitter visitors pulled away with two late goals. Team: K.Barrett, J.McGuinness, K.Naughton, A.Naughton, J.Cullen(0-1), K.Maye, F.Barrett, D.Fox, B.Kelly(1-2), B.Barrins, A.Mullarkey, B.Howley(1-0), P.Maughan(1-3)
The team have the West Divisional championship to play in the next few weeks.
Minor: Castleconnor 1-9 v Mullinabreena 1-4, July 7, 2008
The minor team defeated Coolaney/Mullinabreena in round 6 of the division 2A Minor league, played at Nace O’Dowd park in Achonry on Monday 30th June last. Final score was 1-9 to 1-4.
They take on St. Mary’s in Kent Park on Monday of this week. This is the last round of the league.
Div 2 Rd 12: Castleconnor 1-7 v Drumcliffe 1-15, June 30, 2008
The team suffered their 4th league defeat on Sunday when they went down miserably to Druncliffe/Rosses Point in Oxfield. Despite playing way below our best we turned over at the break level with a goal from Norman Fox leaving the score 1-4 v 0-7. In the first 10 minutes of the second half the game went away from us when the home team reeled off six points on the trot.
Team: B.Kelly, B.Howley, P.Naughton, C.Barrett, R.Healy, J.Tuffy, P.McGuinness, K.Tuffy, P.Kilcullen, B.Foody, K.Langan, T.Cawley, D.Carrabine, F.Kelly, N.Fox. Sub: F.Barrett.
We play St.Marys at home in the penultimate round of the league next Saturday evening at 7:30pm
Junior Championship: Castleconnor 3-6 v Drumcliffe 2-10, June 30, 2008
The junior team made their exit from the county junior championship when going down by the minimum margin to Drumcliffe/Rosses Point in Dromard last weekend. A bad start cost us the game. Playing with the wind we trailed by eight points after 12 minutes but a few changes and a more committed attitude saw us reduce the gap to 3 at the break with the score of 2-4 v 1-4 the goal being scored by Austin Mullarkey. A well taken goal by Paul Maughan straight from the throw in put the game back in the melting pot.
Another goal this time from Brian Curley brought us back level near the end. We had a chance to take the lead with a free after some desperate defending by our conquerors but missed narrowly. With almost the last kick of the game Drumcliffe scored the winning point.
Team: B.Kelly, K.Naughton, J.McGuinness, M.Fitzsimons, J.Cawley, K.Maye, K.Cawley(0-1), J.Cullen, A.Mullarkey(1-0), K.Barrins, P.Maughan(1-4), PJ Barrins(0-1), B.Curley(1-1). Sub Jon Ruane

In the game we scored a comprehensive victory on a scoreline of 5-9 v 0-6.
U14 A semi-final: Castleconnor 0-3 v Tourlestrane 5-11, Aug 28, 2008
The under 14 team were heavily defeated to a more experienced and stronger Tourlestrane side in the semi final of the A championship played at home on Tuesday last.
This is the end of their season.
They participated at A level this year and it was a real challenge for all involved.
Thanks to the management team of Frank Barrett, Norman Fox, Rory Healy and Declan Flynn.
U12 A semi-final: Castleconnor 0-8 v St.Marys 0-11, June27 2008
The tough game from Wednesday showed on the youngsters, as St. Marys had that little bit more. We put in a great performance and were unlucky, not to advance into the final. Final score was 0-11 to 0-8.
The under 12 team under the guidance of Michael Langan, Barnes Kelly and Barry Judge had a very good season finishing 2nd in the Division 1A League, just one point from joining top. Out of 7 league games they won 5, drew 1 and lost 1. Then in the quarter final replay they defeated Easkey AET. The journey ended two days later when St. Marys defeated us in the semi final and ended the hope of winning back to back A titles.
Thanks to the management team for their time and effort, and also to Mary Earlis for her help. Last but not least thanks to all the players, who always come out in great numbers.
U12A quarter final replay: Castleconnor 3-13 v Easkey 5-6, AET, June 19, 2008
After last weeks epic game it was thought impossible that this A quarter final would match it for excitement. In fact it surpassed it. A strong wind towards the Easkey goal made it hard for all players and this was shown in the fast that we only scored 1 point in the 3 quarters against the wind.
Easkey played with the elements in the first and third quarters. The first quarter was a tight affair with both teams possibly showing each other too much respect. Easkey lead by 2 points at this stage.
We started the 2nd quarter in blistering fashion and were 2-5 v 0-2 up coming up to the half time break when Easkey pounced for a goal leaving the score at the break 2-5 v 1-3.
The third quarter was a tight affair with only 3 scores in the with our score coming from a free and the score now at 2-6 v 1-5.
In the fourth quarter the game really opened up and Easkey made a whirlwind start and had 3 goals scored in the first 3 minutes of the quarted. Our team did not panic taking their points and then regaining the lead when Kieran Rogan side footed a ball to the corner to the net. However straigth from the kick out Easkey went up the field to score a goal to lead by 1 but we kept our nerve and score the equalising score from Matthew Cullen.
Extra time was 2 periods of 5 minutes. The tension was unbearable for supporters of both sides. Easkey played with the wind and at the turn around had opened a 2 point gap. There was now 5 minutes to retrieve the situation. First Matthew Cullen, then Jason Earlis equalised for us and with the last kick of the game Matthew Cullen scored from a free out on the left, to leave us victorious.
The supporters were as tired as the players at the end and now the team play St.Marys in the A semi-final in Markievicz Park at the weekend

U14A Champ quarter-final: Castleconnor 1-10 v Coolera 2-6, June 19 2008

Div 5 Rd 6: Castleconnor 2-6 v St.Johns 3-11, June 16, 2008
The junior team travelled to Buninnadden on Sunday morning for our 6th round fixture of the division 5 league. We got off to a good start and despite playing against the breeze in the first half we only trailed by 2 points on a score of 1-4 v 0-9 with Kevin Barrins scoring the goal.
The second half was even but a 90 second spell where we conceded 2-1 put the game out of our reach and despite a late consolation goal from our supersub Bart Barrins we went down on a scoreline of 3-11 v 2-6.
Cubby Maughan seemed to tire after his exertions the night before with the senior team and afterwards which cut our scoring threat. John Mac at full back had another excellent game with Kieran Naughton an able assistant. Bod in the goals could do nothing about the goals. Spider Barrett showed his experience and got a good scorewhilst P.Hackett preferred attack to defence. Big Al as the yougster indefence was the main runner chasing the lost causes
Jockey Cullen despite claims he would not be able to run, covered every blade of grass. Crouchie Howley along with trying to take on the whole Buninnadden defence, caught some great balls as did Morg the hurler in midfield. Captain Frank played the 3rd midfielfer role with unending energy and Kevin kept his goal a game average ticking along. Wee Kevin made his first ever senior start and showed great potential for the future whilst our supersub Bart showed great fitness in the 6 minutes he was on.
Team: B.Kelly, J. McGuinness, K.Naughton, A.Naughton, K.Barrett(0-1), P.Hackett, M.Fitzsimons, J.Cullen, T.Cawley(0-1), K.Barrins(1-1), B.Howley(0-1), P.Maughan(0-2), F.Barrett. Subs: K.Maye, B.Barrins(1-0).

Div 2 Rd 1: Castleconnor 0-11 v Shamrock Gaels 1-6, June 16 2008
The team travelled to Riverstown for round 11 of the division 2 league. We played with the breeze in the first half and despite missing a number of frees we lead at the break by 0-7 v 0-4.
We increased the lead early in the second half, but were rocked when the Gaels scored a goal on the break. We finished the game the stronger and won by two points, 0-11 v 1-6. Despite both teams missing a number of regulars this was a good high tempo game. Next weekend the team has a break. The win puts us into the promotion spots from division 2.

U12A Champ quarter-final: Castleconnor 2-14 v Easkey 4-8, June 16th 2008
The under 12 team played Easkey at home on Thursday evening last in the A Festival quarter final, in a highly competitive encounter. Easkey took an early lead in the first quarter but we managed to make a good come back and led by one point after 10 minutes. At half time that lead was stretched to four points. In the third quarter the team laid back and we trailed by a single point going in to the final quarter. We took the lead again in the last few minutes and it was touch and go always. Heading into the last minute we were leading by three points but unfortunately Easkey worked their way up the field for a goal, which levelled matters.
The final whistle was blown and the spoils were shared in an intriguing and exciting encounter. The youngsters put on a great performance, scoring 2-14 to Easkey’s 4-08. The sides will battle it out again on Wednesday evening the 18th @ 7pm.This is expected to be a tough game so all supporters please come out and encourage the future of the club.

SFC Rd 2: Castleconnor 0-12 v St.Johns 0-9, June 9, 2008
Castleconnor continued their good vein of form in the senior championship with a hard earned victory over St.Johns at Quigabar on Saturday evening. Following St.Farnans result in the following game at the same venue we have now qualified for the championship quarter final.
We got off to a good start with a few early scores but this were needed as we had the assistance of the breeze into the Easkey end goals. After 10 minutes we lost our captain Michael Langan with a leg injury and were further hampered by a blood injury to Norman Fox for the second half of the first period. By the half time break we lead by 0-7 v 0-4.
We got two early points after the resumption but then Johns took the game by the scruff of the neck and whittled the lead down to a point with 19 minutes gone in the half. The team rose to the challenge and we rattled off three points in the remaining time to clinch a well deserved victory with the score reading 0-12 v 0-4.
The next round of this group will not take place until August when we will meet St.Farnans
Team: B.Barrins, K.Barrett, P.Naughton, B.Howley, P.McGuinness, J.Tuffy, R.Healy, M.Langan(0-1), K.Tuffy, F.Kelly, K.Langan(0-7), B.Foody, A.Cawley, P.Kilcullen(0-4), N.Fox. Subs: R.Keane, T.Cawley, F.Barrett.

SFC Rd1: Castleconnor 1-12 v Drumcliffe R/P 1-5, June 6 2008
Castleconnor got their quest for the Owen B. Hunt cup off to a good start when defeating Drumcliffe/Rosses Point on Saturday evening in Markievicz Park. The Park was resplendent and was in terrific shape.
After ten minutes of the game the scores were tied at 2 points a piece when our opponents struck for a brillant goal. Unlike other years the team kept their heads up and reeled off 7 points without reply before the break to lead by 0-9 v 1-2. The second half was a more scrappy affair with a lot of chances being spurned but we ended up victorious with the score of 1-12 v 1-5.
Team: B.Barrins, K.Barrett, P.Naughton, B.Howley, P.McGuinness, J.Tuffy, R.Healy, M.Langan, K.Tuffy, F.Kelly, K.Langan, B.Foody, A.Cawley, P.Kilcullen, N.Fox. Subs: R.Keane, T.Cawley, F.Barrett.

U10 Community Games: Castleconnor 1-5 v Tubbercurry 3-4, June 6 2008
Castleconnor left the community games competition with their heads held high after a good performance.
With the rules slightly different to the GAA rules, the girls on the team were penalised when picking the ball straigth from the ground. This caused us havoc as we were only informed before the game and as the opposition had no girls on their team it was definitely a drawback.
Coming up to the half time break we were leading by 2 points to 1 when with the last kick of the half Tubber got through for the first of their goals.
At the start of the second half, Tubber got through for 2 goals but our team never stopped trying until the final whistle and had narrowed the gap to 5 points. We are now out of this competition. Thanks to the management and players for their effort
U12 : Castleconnor 3-12 v Coolera 2-11, June 5, 2008

U16B League Final: Castleconnor 1-9 v Easkey 0-4, May 28, 2008
Pride of place this week goes to the under 16 team who were deserving winners of the division 2B league on Friday evening against neighbours Easkey at a sunny Templeboy. Having been previously defeated by the same side in round 5 of the league, the team knew it wasn’t going to be easy and had trained very hard in the lead up to the final.
Despite a late change of venue, supporters came out in numbers to support the team as the west Sligo derby got underway at 6.45pm.
We were far the better team, put great moves together and showed team spirit throughout the game. In goals Anthony Kilcullen kept a clean sheet, dealt very well with some high balls and kept the defence organised always. In the full back line Keith Earlis and Ronan Barrett applied massive pressure and bursted out with the ball at all times. T
he half back line of Martin Foody, John McGuinness and Kevin McDonnell were very solid and ran up the field on numerous occasions. In midfield Stephen Kilgannon and John McDonnell used the ball very well, caught ball, won breaks and made things look so easy and simple.
The half forward line of Darragh Gilmartin, Paul Sweeney and Barry Judge co-ordinated very well with each other and ran at the Easkey defence, while in the very lively full forward line of Matthew Crawford and Richard Howley, Easkey had their hands full.
After the game, the chairman of Coiste na nOg Shligigh, Peter McHugh presented captain John McGuinness with the cup.
Afterwards, food was served in Muddy Burns. Thanks to Mark, Majella and the staff.
This great win was the first final of the year and we hope more silverware will be won this year. Well done to all involved. Great credit is due to the managers Michael McDonnell, John McGuinness and Paul Kilcullen for their time and effort.
Of course this is not the end of the road, the team now prepare for the upcoming championship season.
Div 2 Rd10: Castleconnor 0-14 v Calry 2-10, May 28, 2008
Castleconnor travelled to Calry for a back fixture in the league. A strong wind ruined the game but at the break we were leading 0-10 v 1-2.

Next weekend we are playing in Markievicz Park on Saturday evening at 5:30pm against Drumcliffe/Rosses Point. Please come out and support the team.

U14: Castleconnor 6-6 v Eastern Harps 6-4, May 21, 2008
A great performance in a rip-roaring contest.
Div 2 Rd9: Castleconnor 2-11 v Eastern Harps 1-6, May 19, 2008
Same fixture, same result, but unlike last week we did not play to our best. Despite getting a goal in the first minutes from "Cubby" Maughan, (was it a fluke or a brillant lob, tell the truth Paul?) and racing into a 1-3 v 0-1 lead we never looked comfortable. When the half time break arrived we were leading by 2 1-4 v 0-5, with the home side scoring some good long range points.
We started the second half with more urgency and when Norman Fox cooly side footed the ball to the Harps net the game was as good as over. Despite a late goal for the home side there was no doubt of the result
Team: B.Barrins, B.Howley, C.Barrett, R.Keane, P.McGuinness, J.Tuffy, R.Healy, K.Tuffy, P.Kilcullen, B.Foody, F.Kelly, N.Fox, A.Cawley, K.Langan, P.Maughan. Subs: B.Howley, B.Curley

U12: Castleconnor 5-7 v Curry 5-17, MAy 16 , 2008
All the damage in this game was done in the first quarter where we turned around losing 1-11 v 0-2. After this our players picked themselves up and gave a good account of themselves from there to the end. Matthew Cullen was the leading scorer with 3-2 , with Sean Carrabine and Cian Barrins scoring the other goals.
Div 5 Rd 4: Castleconnor 1-6 v Ballymote 5-11, May 16, 2008
Our team travelled to Ballymote for the 4th round of the division 5 league. The team were very slow out of the blocks and the game was over as a contest at half time when we trailed 4-8 v 0-1.
However the lads showed good spirit in the second half and played good football. The crazy fact of the game was for the last 45 mins of the game we equalled Ballymote 1-6 v 2-3 but a game is over 60 mins.
"Go for the glory" Gorman made a big impact when introduced at half time and scored a memorable point. "Horse" Cullen in his first game in 5 years was slow to start but took the game by the scruff of the neck in the second half and was instrumental in getting the team going with his no-nonsense approach.
"Cubby" Maughan took 2 nice points and "Crouch" Howley took his goal well. The golden oldies on the team had their moments and never let the side down.
The teams next outing is a home game v Geevagh on June Bank holiday Monday
The final score was 5-11 v 1-6.
Team: B.Barrins, J.McGuinness, R.Keane, J.Cullen, F.Barrett, A.Naughton, PJ Barrins, B. Howley (1-0), B.Kelly, K.Barrins (0-2), B.Curley(0-1), P.Maughan(0-2), A.Mullarkey. Sub J.Gorman(0-1)

The under 14 team came from well behind in the second half to see off a gallant Coolera/Strandhill in round 4 of the Division 1 league on Tuesday evening last.
Trailing by 4 points at the interval, and 6 points with 15 minutes left on the clock the team worked hard with strong performances in the middle of the park, especially in the second half. This win, the first in the league was aided by a strong breeze in the second period and we worked very hard in defence in the first half-against the breeze to keep Coolera Strandhill quiet, although they lead by 4 points at the break.
Final Score: Castleconnor 4-8 .v. 2-8 Collera/Strandhill.

Div 2 Rd 7: Castleconnor 2-8 v Geevagh 3-3, April 28, 2008
The seventh round of the division 2 league was tabled as a home fixture but as league leaders Geevagh travelled to us in an earlier round we offered to travel this time. On a warm evening with soft underfoot conditions a very exciting game took place with space at a premium.
We were off to a whirlwind start with Rory Healy having scored 1-1 in the first 90 seconds. Geevagh then picked up the pace and responded to take the lead during the half. A Frankie Kelly goal put us in front coming up to halftime where we lead 2-4 v 2-2.
The second half saw us extend the lead early on but we were down to 14 men soon after. A goal from a penalty and a point from the resultant kickout saw the home team take the lead. Great effort from our players did not let them score for the remainder of the game and with the final kick Patrick McGuinness scored the equalising score with the scoreline 2-6 v 3-3

We got ourselves back into the game and took the lead with a point from Gerry Holmes, and a goal from Kevin Barrins after a great pass from Brian Curley. At the break we trailed 1-5 v 1-3 with an Easkey goal late in the half.
Brian Curley scored our second goal after a good move all the way from defence but Easkey hit a purple patch and score 1-2 without reply to put 4 points between the teams. We brought this back to two points and then were unfortunate when Paul Maughan struck the crossbar. The last few minutes were helter-skelter but our efforts were in vain despite a late goal from Paul Maughan. The final score was 3-6 v 2-10

As has been the case all year we played with the breeze in the first hald but went behind early on. However Crouch Howley fisted to the Calry net after 10 minutes. Coming up to the half time whistle Paul Kilcullen scored a good point from play to leave the teams deadlocked 1-1 v 0-4 at half time.

The minor team were unfortunate to be defeated at home on Monday last 14th April when they took on Bunninadden in round 5 of the Division 2A league.
Despite missing some regulars Castleconnor battled hard and put up a great performance.
Leading by 2 points at the interval(0-9 to 1-4), the team lost focus in the second period, and went behind for the first time with 15 minutes left on the clock. Bunninadden went on to score two more goals, one from a penalty and this buried the team and their chances of a win.

The team had their second outing of the year when we travelled to Carraroe to play St. Johns in the second round of the division 5 league. Our team was the proverbial mix of old and young and for the most part worked wll with everyone giving their all.
We started the game well with 3 points from Paul Kilcullen. Johns started to take control and at the break lead by 0-5 v 0-3.
Both sides traded points in the early minutes of the second half but the homeside hit a purple patch scoring 1-2 without reply in a 5 minute spell. Our team showed admirable fighting ability when clawing their lead back to 2 points but Johns greater fitness and craft around goal told in the end running out winners 1-12 v 0-9.
Team: Spider Barrett, Ronan Keane, John McGuinness, F.Barrett (0-2), Alan Naughton, Brian Foody, N.Fox, P.Kilcullen(0-4), Joe "go for the glory"Gorman, Brian Curley(0-2), Austin Mullarkey, PJ Barrins, Brian "Crouch"Howley(0-1). Sub Gerry Holmes

Div 2 Rd 5: Castleconnor 0-15 v St.Marys 1-7 April 13, 2008
Our fifth round game of the division 2 league took place on Sunday afternoon. The game was moved to Kent Park on Sunday morning as our pitch was unplayable. The game was played with glorious sunshine and a strong breeze.
We played with the elements in the first half and were on the scoreboard in the first minute. However Marys hit back with a goal. We regained our composure somewhat but had to depend on two brillant saves from Barnes "Bod" Kelly and by the half time break we fortunate to lead by two points with the score 0-8 v 1-3.
In the second period we scored first and took total control in the middle third of the field and this and the strong running of our players meant we finished stronger and won on a score of 0-15 v 1-7.
Next weekend we are away to west division rivals St.Farnans on Saturday evening.

Div 2 Rd 4: Castleconnor 0-8 v Drumcliffe R/P 1-3, April 6 2008
This round 4 game was played during hail, sleet showers, gale force winds and crazily sunshine and in this writers opinion the coldest of any match ever attended there.
We played with the strong wind towards the Ballina end in the first half and got off to a quick start with 3 fairly quick points two from play by minor David Carrabine and a free by Kevin Langan. Drumcliffe came back into the game then and started to boss us around the middle of the field. They then scored a goal and we swapped points near the end of the half. At the break things looked very bleak when we lead by 1 point on a score of 0-5 v 1-1.
Facing the elements in the second half we took the game by the scruff of the neck and got the first score of the half. The introduction of Karl Tuffy back from injury at half time solidified our middle sector. Drumcliffe got their first point of the half after 9 minutes but they did not add to that until 3 minutes into added time. Castleconnor were then awarded a penalty that was saved. However another 2 points from our lads opened up a 3 point lead coming into the last 5 minutes.
Despite one scary moment we held out for a well deserved victory.
Team: Morgan Fitzsimons, Patrick McGuinnes, Kieran Barrett, Brendan Howley, Rory Healy, John Tuffy, David Fox, Frankie Kelly, Michael Langan, Tom Cawley, Kevin Langan, Brian Foody, Alan Cawley, Paul Kilcullen, David Carrabine. Subs: Karl Tuffy, Kevin Barrins
Minor: Castleconnor 1-7 v Geevagh 3-14, April 4 2008

Div 2 Rd 3: Castlconnor 0-6 v Shamrock Gaels 1-5, Mar 26 2008
Our senior team had Shamrock Gaels as visitors for the 3rd round of the division 2 league on Sunday. In a well fought and good mannered game, the game was marred by the bad leg break sustained by our forward Niall Judge in the early minutes of the game.
At the half time break we were down by 0-4 v 0-2 with the wind causing havoc for both sets of players. We took the lead with 5 minutes to go but a last minute goal from the visitors saw them victorious on a score of 1-5 v 0-6.
Team: Bart Barrins, Patrick McGuinness, Patrick Naughton, Brendan Howley, John Tuffy, David Fox, Kieran Barrett, Michael Langan, Frankie Kelly, Paul Kilcullen, Rory Healy, Norman Fox, Niall Judge, Kevin Langan, David Carrabine. Subs: Alan Cawley

Div 5 Rd 1: Castleconnor 2-7 v Enniscrone 1-14, Mar 23 2008
The junior team had their first game in the league on Good Friday evening when neighbours Enniscrone visited. With a severe gale going straight down the pitch this was the definitive match of two halves with 23 of the 24 scores being scored into the Ballina town end of the pitch.
We played with the elements in the first half and got off to a good start with a quick point from play from Brian Curley. Brian Howley added a soccer type goal soon after but our team were finding it hard to score from play with Paul Kilcullen kicking long range frees to keep the score board moving. Kevin Barrins scored a good goal with his left peg but on the changeover we only had a 2-7 v 0-1 lead.
Like ourselves Enniscrone depended on free taking for the majority of their scores. With 5 minutes remaining the scores were level and with 2 minutes to go Enniscrone scored a goal to go 3 up. We managed to get downfield but despite striking the goalpost and the crossbar the Enniscrone goal remained intact. The Enniscrone final score came with the last kick of the game, winning on a score of 1-14 v 2-7.
Team: Bart Barrins, Morgan Fitzsimons, Ronan Keane, Frank Barrett(c), Pat Hackett, Brian Foody, Paul Kilcullen(0-5), Kevin Barrins(1-0), Barnes Kelly (0-1), Brian Howley, Alan Cawley, Brian Curley (0-1) Subs: Paddy Barrins, David Kelly, Alan Naughton, Norman Fox
Our next game is expected to be the weekend of April 21. Training continues on Tuesday and Friday nights
Div 2 Rd 2: Castleconnor 1-11 v Calry 1-4, Mar 9 2008
Castleconnor and Calry/St.Josephs met again this weekend in the 2nd round of the division 2 league at Corballa. A strong breeze blew towards the Sligo goal and we had the elements in the first half. Unlike teo weeks ago we made use of the wind and by the time we had reached half time we lead by 1-8 v 0-1 with the goal coming from Kevin Langan midway through the half. Despite this lead, it did not look the best of leads with the strong breeze having to be faced in the second half.
We took control of the game though and scored the first two points of the half to increase our lead. Calry then fought back with 1-1 but all players but in an extra effort and in the end we well deserved the victory with a score of 1-11 v 1-4.
Team: Bart Barrins, Patrick McGuinness, Patricl Naughton, Brendan Howley, John Tuffy, David Fox, Kieran Barrett, Michael Langan, Frankie Kelly, Tom Cawley, Rory Healy, Norman Fox, Niall Judge, Kevin Langan, Patrick Hackett. Subs; David Carrabine, Frank Barrett, Paul Kilcullen, Kieran Naughton,
Next weekend we face Eastern Harps in Keash on Sunday at 11:30am in the third round of the league.
Schools Hurling Final: Stokane defeat Castlerock, Mar 7 2008
These lads bounced back from their unlucky defeat in the indoor hurling final last week to victory in the 7- a side outdoor hurling final on Friday.
They defeated Castlerock N.S, the same team they had played the week previous.
Well done to all involved, teachers, parents & above all the players, on this great achievement.
Kiernan Cup Rd 2: Castleconnor 1-5 v Calry 0-10 Mar 3, 2008
Playing with the breeze at the start we failed to make proper use of it and went in at half time down by 2 (0-3 v 0-5).
Calry extended the lead but a well struck Stephen Skellick penalty brought us back into the game and despite camping out in the opposition half for the last 5 mins, the home team could not be breached.
We play the same team in the league next weekend
Team: Bart Barrins, Patrick McGuinness, Kieran Barrett, Brendan Howley, Rory Healy, Jason Cawley, John Tuffy, Michael Langan(0-1), Karl Tuffy, Tom Cawley, Frankie Kelly, Brian Foody, Stephen Skellick(1-1), Kevin Barrins(0-1), Norman Fox. Subs Frank Barrett(0-1), Barnes Kelly (0-1), Patrick Hackett.
Div 2 Rd 1: Castleconnor 1-9 v Geevagh 1-11, Feb 27 2008
Castleconnor played Geevagh in the first round of the league proper on Sunday at Corballa. The game was supposed to be played in Geevagh but as their pitch was unplayable the tie was moved to Corballa late on Sunday. Considering the time of year the pitch itself was in good shape. A strong wind blew towards the Sligo goal throughout the game and we played with the elements in the first half. Despite this it was the visitors who got the first score of the game from a close in free. Castleconnor had many chances in the half but either shot wide or too softly and lead at the break by only two points with the score standing at 0-6 v 0-4.
Within five minutes of the restart Geevagh had wiped this lead out with some long range points and by the 12th minute of the half lead by 3 points. With the dismissal of a Geevagh player for two yellow cards we came back into it and took the lead with a Kieran Barrett goal. To the end it was nip and tuck with Geevagh clinching the win with a goal with 4 minutes to go.
Team: Bart Barrins, Patrick McGuinness, Jason Cawley, Brendan Howley, Rory Healy, Patrick Naughton, John Tuffy, Michael Langan, Kevin Langan, Tom Cawley, Frankie Kelly, Stephen Skellick, Niall Judge, Colin Gordon, Norman Fox. Subs, Kieran Barrett, Kevin Barrins, David Carrabine
Kiernan Cup Rd 1: Castleconnor 2-17 v Eastern Harps 2-1, Feb12 2008
The senior team got their year off to a great start with an easy first round win of the Kiernan cup. Many of the Harps players were playing their second game of the day but our score taking was good to watch.
After 10 minutes of the game we were 2-4 to no score up with the goals coming from Rory Healy and Stephen Skellick, both after good inter passing movements.
The half time score was 2-7 v 1-1. Harps score an early second half penalty but they tired after that and Castleconnor scored some good scores.
Team: Bart Barrins, Brendan Howley, Jason Cawley, Patrick McGuinness, John Tuffy, Kieran Barrett, Rory Healy, Michael Langan, Kevin Langan, Stephen Skellick, Frankie Kelly, Tom Cawley, Niall Judge, Colin Gordon, Norman Fox. Connacht Scór finals, Our ballad group loses out, Jan 22, 2008
Our ballad group of Mary and Brid McGowan, Fiona Coyne, Tara Cawley and Rebecca Ruane represented Sligo in the Scor Connaught Finals on Sunday @ 2pm in Claremorris Town Hall. Although performing excellently, they were unlucky to be defeated. These girls deserve great credit for their hard work and effort put into the competition. They started out in Gurteen in the county semi finals between the South and West Sligo regions. They then got through to the county finals held in Loftus Hall, Ballymote, when again they were victorious and by far the best in their category.
The club are proud that these girls reached the Connaught finals and although they were unlucky, we’re sure its not the last we’ll see of them. Also a word of thanks to Connie Barrins, our Scór co-ordinater for her time and effort also.
