SFL Div 4 Rd. 7: Calry 0-12 v 0-12 Castleconnor
posted 24 Jun 2015, 13:23 by castleconnor sligo
Tight for numbers, our junior team made the trip to Calry on Friday last. A dark wet evening played host to a good tight game of football.
Castleconnor had many chances to convert goals but couldn't get the finishing touches to grab a win and the game ended level.
The visitors scores came from the boots of Brian Howley, Vincent Howley and Matthew Cullen.
Unfortunately, the draw was not enough to secure a semi final spot for the lads. They now prepare for the Junior Championship with no date fixed as of yet.

Congratulations to the Sligo team and most of all, club man Kevin McDonnell on a splendid four point victory over Roscommon in Markievicz Park on Saturday evening last.
A strong workmanlike ethic and a mean defence were the foundation of which was a huge win for the Yeats men. Kevin was an integral part of this and was named at full back in the "gaa.ie team of the week" as a reward of his efforts.
Adrian Marren did most of the scoring for Sligo with a gaol and seven points but this really was a terriffic team display.
Sligo and Kevin will now face the might of Mayo in the Connacht final on Sunday the 19th of July with a venue yet to be confirmed.
We would like to express our pride at having Kevin represent his family and the club so well and wish him and the rest of the Sligo team all the best going forward for the year.
Sligo v Roscommon:
Best wishes to Kevin McDonnell and the Sligo senior team in the semi final of the Connacht SFC in Markievicz Park on Saturday at 7pm. This is preceeded by the meeting of the same sides in the Ladies Championship at 4.45pm. All at the club wish Kevin the very best of luck. Well done to Kevin's sponsors for the team training fund - Gerry Curley Office PRO and Patrick Cleary Top Oil. Let's all get to Markievicz this Saturday evening and get behind the team.

SFL Div 4 Rd. 7: Castleconnor 3-12 v 2-15 Coolaney/Mullinabreena
posted 19 Jun 2015, 10:19 by castleconnor sligo
The junior team hosted Coolaney/Mullinabreena on Monday. Castleconnor had a blistering start and were 3-4 to a point up after 15 minutes, Ronan Martin getting a hat trick. Coolaney hit a purple patch of their own, bringing the difference back to 2 points before half time.
The second half was tightly contested with both sides playing great football. Both teams just lacked the clinical edge in front of the posts to win it in the dying moments. Final score 3-12 to 2-15.
Next match is away to Calry St. Joeseph's on Friday 19th.

U14 Football
A wild eveningThursday evening in Corballa was witness to a tight and tense affair against neighbours Easkey. Without a host of players including the influential Ronan Wilson, Liam Donegan, Owen Gillard and David Boland, the lads worked tirelessly throughout. Despite the lads best efforts in a evenly sided game, they couldn't get the final breakthrough and Easkey ran out two score victors, 3-8 to 1-16.
Team: Andrew Blakeney, Daniel Ruane, Rian Winters, Dáire Barrins, Fergal Boland, Eli O'Neill, Matthew Blakeney, Oisín Flynn, James Tully, Colm Naughton, Thomas Langan, Eoin Duffy, Patrick Cooney
U14 Hurling
Our hurlers were beaten at the hands of a stronger Drumcliffe side last Saturday week in Corballa. Unfortuantely this was mostly down to the failure to convert a number of scoreable chances. The final score was 0-2 to 4-4.
U12 Football
Unfortuantely, there was no luck wither for our U12 side who were beaten in Calry last week. The final score was 0-12 to 0-7.
U12 Hurling
Our U12 team faces Naomh Eoin in Corballa at 7pm on Tuesday the 9th of June. All support would be appreciated.
The girls in Stokane NS qualified on Wednesday last to contest the final of the Two Teacher Schools Cumann na Mbunscol Gaelic Football competition when they defeated Kilross NS.
The final will take place in Markeveicz Park on Saturday the 13th of June (time to be confirmed).
It is surely a tremendous achievement as the team is made up of only seven players allowing for no subs.
The opposition for the final will see the girls come up against another West Sligo team in the shape of Templeboy.
The club is very proud of the girls achievements so far and wish them all the best in the final.
Support on the day would be greatly appreciated.

The junior team ran out eight point winners after a hard fought battle with St. Michaels in Collooney on Friday last.
An early Brian Howley penalty and goals from Matthew Cullen, Keith Earlis, Eoin Kent and Ronan Martin paved way to win what was a feisty affair.
Notable strong performances came from Ronan Keane, Vinny Howley and Stephen Durkan.
Team: Stephen Durkan, Conor Judge, Frank Barrett, Darragh Gilmartin, Ronan Keane, Eoin Kent, Ciaran Kilcullen, Brian Howley, Keith Earlis, Niall Judge, Vincent Howley, Matthew Cullen, Ronan Martin
Next up for the juniors is a home tie against Coolaney/Mullinabreena in two weeks.

posted 26 May 2015, 10:14 by castleconnor sligo [ updated 26 May 2015, 10:16 ]
Our Intermediate side recorded a well earned win over West Sligo rivals St. Farnans on Sunday.
After a sticky opening couple of minutes conceding the first two scores of the game, the visiting side soon settled into their groove.
Points from Matthew Cullen, Niall Judge, Stephen Curley and Eamon Cawley put the lads on their way and when Cullen was there to finish what was a wonderful team goal, the away side never looked back.
Barnes Kelly unfortunately spent the evening nursing a nasty head wound after a clash of heads midway through the first half. He left the field replaced by Paul Sweeney who himself had to leave the field through injury before the game was up.
Team: Colin Gordon, Brendan Howley, Tom Cawley, Ronan Keane, Cian Barrins, John McDonnell, Jack O'Hora, Kevin Langan, Kevin McDonnell, Barnes Kelly, Eamon Cawley, Keith Earlis, Stephen Curley, Niall Judge, Matthew Cullen, Anthony Kilcullen, Paul Sweeney, Brian Howley, Ciaran Kilcullen, Eoin Flynn, Stephen Durkan, Stephen Kilgannon, Eoin Kent
The team now need to win both remaining fixtures against Shamrock Gaels and Enniscrone to secure a place in the league final. When these fixtures will be played however is another matter with Sligo's participation in the Connacht Semi Final and the beginning of the club championship both taking place in the next month. It is possible that the leagues finish may be delayed.
Our Under 14 boys had two games in the league this week with contrasting results.
We played host to St. Pats on Monday evening and put on quite a good display. Unfortunately, the visitors only got the took the lead very late on after the home side lead right throughout. Fergal Boland and Sean Finnegan were the stand out performers on the night as we lost out by a score of 4-4 to 3-12.
On Friday evening, the team travelled to Nace O'Dowd Park to square off against Coolaney/Mullinabreena.
The visitors led at half-time by 3-4 to 1-6.
With the influential pair of Ronan WIlson and Andrew Blakeney succumbing to injury, team had to battle hard to maintain their lead.
Liam Donegan in goals was excellent throughout.
The goalscorers on the evening were Thomas Langan, Colm Naughton, Ronan Wilson, James Tully and Patrick Cooney. Oisin Flynn also added some huge scores.
A strong beginning and end from the defence capped off a solid performace from the team with the scoreline finishing Coolaney Mullinabreena 2-12 v 6-9 Castleconnor.
Panel On Duty: Liam Donnegan, Rian Winters, Daniel Ruane, Eli O'Neill, Dáire Barrins, Fergal Boland, Ronan Wilson, Andrew Blakeney, Matthew Blakeney, Oisín Flynn, Thomas Langan, James Tully, Colm Naughton, Owen Gillard, Patrick Cooney, Sean Finnegan, David Boland, Daniel Boland
Next up for the U14 footballers is a tie with neighbours Easkey in Corballa on Friday the 5th of June.

Our junior team succumbed to defeat in Collooney on Friday night.
A slow start allowed the home side to get a grip on proceedings and despite the visitors best efforts they couldn't seem to get the ball over the line. Our scores came from Brian Howley, Paul Sweeney, Vinny Howley and Barnes Kelly.
Next up for the junior team is another away assignment against St. Michaels next Friday the 29th of May at 8pm.

The junior team notched up their first win of the year with a comfortable victory over St. Farnans in Corballa on Sunday.
A Matthew Cullen goal and two from Vinny Howley meant the result was rarely in doubt. A host of single scores from Cullen along with a couple each from Vinny and Brian Howley, Niall Judge and John Cullen was enough to give the home side the win.
Team:
Anthony Kilcullen, Darragh Gilmartin, Frank Barrett, Keith Earlis, Stephen Kilgannon, Conor Gallagher, Brian Howley, Ciaran Kilcullen, Niall Judge, Matthew Cullen, John Cullen, Vinny Howley, Ronan Barrett, Bart Barrins

SFL Div 2 Rd 8: Castleconnor 1-10 v 1-8 Easkey
posted 18 May 2015, 11:59 by castleconnor sligo
The Intermediate team kept their hopes of making a league final alive with a well earned win over neighbours Easkey in Corballa on Friday evening.
Despite playing with the breeze and getting countless opportunities, the home side only led by two at half time largely thanks to a Matthew Cullen goal. Eamon Cawley had the chance to put the gap to four but his penalty was put narrowly over after Brian Howley was hauled down by the Easkey keeper.
The hosts started the second half well, with the ever present Stephen Curley keeping the scoreboard ticking over with a total of five points from play. Just as Castleconnor seemed to be getting a real grip on proceedings, midway through the second half Easkey fired into the net after a little confusion in the full back line. However, the visitors couldn't find a way at the goal late on thanks to an extremely solid defensive performance. Despite the home side missing numerous chances to close the game out, they held on for a two point win.
Special mentions for Niall Judge and Keith Earlis who made their first starts of the year following their return from serious knee injuries respectively.
Team: Colin Gordon, Tom Cawley, Brendan Howley, Ronan Keane, Cian Barrins, John McDonnell, Jack O'Hora, Michael Langan, Kevin Langan, Keith Earlis, Eamon Cawley, Stephen Curley, Niall Judge, Brian Howley, Matthew Cullen Subs: Paul Sweeney, Stephen Kilgannon, (Both Featured) Stephen Durkan, Ciaran Kilcullen, Barnes Kelly, Vinny Howley
Next up for the senior team is a must win tie in Templeboy against St. Farnans next Sunday the 24th of May at 2pm.

U16 Div 2 League Semi Final:
The U16 team could not make follow the minors suit in beating Coolera this week. Unfortunately for the lads, they faced a stronger Coolera team on the night. The team plucked away in the second period and had the deficit down to three points but a purple patch from the hosts seen them stretch their lead. A very reassuring performance from everyone considering the team were without the services of Danny O'Hora, Odhran Quinn, Andrew Blakeney.

Minor FL Div 2 Shield FINAL: Castleconnor 1-13 v 2-4 Coolera/Strandhill
posted 15 May 2015, 09:59 by castleconnor sligo [ updated 15 May 2015, 11:57 ]
Without the unavailable Paul Flynn and Odhrán Quinn to school commitments and Danny O'Hora to injury, our minor team faced a tough proposition in the form of Coolera/Strandhill on Thursday evening in Scarden.
In what was the first of hopefully many of the clubs finals this year, Castleconnor rolled into a 1-2 to no score lead after a well taken Luke Munnelly goal.
Coolera though, eventaully found their feet and struck a goal of their own. At the break, Castleconnor led by 1-6 to 1-2.
Coolera started strong in the second half and pulled the gap back to two points but a late surge of quality scores from Seán Carrabine, Jack O'Hora and Micheál Cahill saw Castleconnor secure a deserved five point victory.
A strong defensive display was at the heart of this victory limiting Coolera to six scores. Exceptional displays noted from Cian Barrins and James Boland.
Team: Kenneth Healy, Enda Kilcullen, Stephen Durkan, James Boland, Cian Barrins, Benny Foody, Jack O'Hora (Captain), Seán Carrabine, Micheál Cahill, Lewis Beardshall, Elliot Beardshall, Luke Munnelly, Niall Judge
Everyone at the club would like to congratulate the lads on their efforts so far this year and wish them well in the Championship.
Many thanks also to the management of Kieran O'Hora, Mark Carr and Niall Judge.

The minor team reached what will hopefully be first of a number of finals for the club this year with a hard fought win over St. Michaels in Corballa on Monday night.
The team started reasonably well without the injured attacker Paul Flynn in the team and led 1-8 to 0-4 at the break.
St. Michaels, to their credit, came out at half time and got themselves back into the game. Two sucker-punches from the away side and an inability to convert from the hosts left the game hanging in the balance with fifteen minutes to go.
The home side eventually pushed on however, and amazingly scored five goals in the final ten to fifteen minutes of the game to run out fourteen point victors.
Despite the somewhat flattering scoreline, strong performances noted came from Jack O'Hora, James Boland and Sean Carrabine.
Team: Kenneth Healy, Stephen Durkan, Enda Kilcullen, James Boland, Cian Barrins, Benny Foody, Lewis Beardshall, Sean Carrabine, Michael Cahill, Jack O'Hora, Danny O'Hora, Luke Munnelly, Elliot Beardshall, Niall Judge
The team will now play Coolera/Strandhill in the Shield Final, this coming Thursday, the 14th of May at 7.30pm in a triple header at the Centre of Excellence in Scarden.
We urge all who can attend to come down and support the lads.
This week our minor and U-16 teams have semi final's in their respective leagues. Good luck to all involved. Our minor lads had an impressive six point victory over neighbours Enniscrone in Corballa on Wednesday evening.
Two goals from Jack O'Hora along with one each from Michael Cahill and Elliot Beardshall put the home side in complete control at half time leading 4-4 to 0-3.
The only worrying point for the management will be the fact that Castleconnor only managed a single score in the second half but still held out as worthy winners.
It is unclear as of yet whether a League or Shield semi final awaits the lads.

Our minor side came out on the losing side in their away trip to Ballymote on Friday last. The team took time to get to grip of the hosts attacking threat and it wasn't until the home were reduced by a man that the visitors kicked into gear.
Despite their best efforts and a Jack O'Hora goal, they could not close the gap and Ballymote ran out three point winners.
Team: Kenneth Flynn, Stephen Durkan, Enda Kilcullen, Benny Foody, Cian Barrins, James Boland, Sean Carrabine, Lewis Beardshall, Michael Cahill, Jack O'Hora, Danny O'Hora, Elliot Beardshall, Niall Judge, Luke Munnelly
Next up for the minors is a home game against neighbours Enniscrone on Thursday next at 7.00pm in Corballa. All support would be greatly appreciated.

Our Under 14 side were comfortably beaten at home to Tourlestrane on Friday last. After a positive start, a collision between two of our players broke our stride from which we never really recovered. There were also couple of notable absences which showed on the evening.
Well done to the lads for their efforts.
Team on duty: Liam Donegan, Daniel Ruane, Eli, O'Neill, Dáire Barrins, Colm Naughton, Matthew Blakeney, Andrew Blakeney, Fergal Boland, James Tully, Oisín Flynn, Thomas Langan, Owen Gillard, Eoin Duffy, Rian Winters
Next outing is away to Curry this coming Wednesday at 7pm.
The junior team had their second outing of the year in Tourlestrane last Friday night. The game being played under lights was quite a drab affair in the first half with the away side only recording a single Vincent Howley score and trailed by seven points at the break.
The second half showed a much healthier display. Two Brian Howley scores, one from Ronan Martin and a goal from Anthony Kilcullen saw the visiors at least make a game of it. The home team, however, ran out comfortable seven points winners.
Next outing for the junior side is in three weeks at home to west division rivals St. Farnans.
The Official Opening of the new extension of the Castleconnor Community Centre will take place on Friday 1st May @ 7.00pm. Refreshments will be served and The Curly Bobs will provide the music late in to the night.

Pats started the second half with a goal and a point, and Castleconnor responded with three points on the run. Pats stretched their lead to 5 points. A forty-five from Éamonn Cawley dropped into the box and ended up in the net. But Pats again stretched their lead to 3 points. The home team refused to give up and when the ball fell to Jack O'Hora after a goalmouth scramble he slotted home to bring the teams level. A point from Kevin Langan edged Castleconnor into the lead. The minor team hosted Easkey on Thursday last. An unenthusiastic display in the first half from the home side left them with a lot to do in the second half.
They gradually played better football as the game wore on but were unable to convert a number of chances to close the gap on their neighbours Easkey who eventually ran out comfortable ten point winners.

As the case with the senior team, the minor teams next outing is an away assignment in Ballymote.
Throw in for the minors is at 7.00 pm on Thursday next the 23rd of April.
The intermediate team kept their unbeaten run in the division 2 league with a win by the narrowest of margins over St. Pats on Sunday afternoon in Corballa.
The visitors controlled much of the opening half but some tough defending and two late scores from the hosts kept the gap at just two points in favour of Pats at the interval.
The second half saw both teams trade points before the away team struck a hammer blow with a goal midway through the half. With the gap at six, Castleconnor appeared to be heading to their first defeat but confusion in the Pats square from an Eamonn Cawley forty-five saw the ball go straight into the net and cut the gap to three points. Single scores were traded again before Kevin McDonnell's power saw him force his way inside the opposition twenty yard line. The ball fell to substitute Jack O'Hora who made no mistake in bringing it level. With the game in injury time, it looked as if the spoils would be shared but a fine Kevin Langan score in the dying embers would seal a single point victory for the home team.
Team: Anthony Kilcullen, Tom Cawley, Patrick McGuinness, Brendan Howley, Cian Barrins, John McDonnell, Ronan Keane, Michael Langan, Kevin McDonnell, Ciaran Kilcullen, Kevin Langan, Eoin Flynn, Brian Howley, Eamonn Cawley, Matthew Cullen
Subs: Niall Judge, Jack O'Hora, Paul Kilcullen, (all featured) Barnes Kelly, Vincent Howley, Darragh Gilmartin, Stephen Durkan
Next up for the team is a trip to Ballymote Sunday next at 2.00pm.

The under 12 team got off to a winning start against Coolaney Mullinabreena last Tuesday. Final score was 0-10- v 0-5.
The u14s hosted Enniscrone in their first match of the 'B' league last week. The team started well and played some fine football. They went in at the break 3 points behind, 1-9 to 9.
Enniscrone started the second half the better and stretched out their lead. Enniscrone had played two games already and were in the 'A' division last year, and finished the game strongly.

It was a Tough Day for the Castleconnor in the 40x20 Connacht Handball Semi-Finals in Corballa on Sunday last.
First up was Micheal Jones who took on Damien Ryder from Mayo. Micheal didn't really get going in the first match loosing 21-6. The second Match however proved to be very entertaining, with some great Handball from both players. But it wasn't to be and Mayo took the second game 21-16.
Next up was Jason Earlis who took on Darragh Ruane who was also from Mayo. Jason took the first game in a thriller, with a 21-18 scoreline. The Mayo player started the second game very strong and won the game with a 21-7 scoreline. The match went to a tie breaker and it was obvious that the crowd wasn't going anywhere!
However, early in the match Jason took a ball off the back wall but immediately roared in pain. It was clear to see that an old injury had come back to haunt him and he had no option but to forfeit the match.
Congratulations to both players on making it to the Semi-Final stages and the Club wishes Jason a speedy recovery.
A massive Thank You to all the supporters who turned out in great numbers - and to Mary in the kitchen.
