Social night and awards

The club held its annual social in Muddy Burns on December 27th. A large crowd was in attendance with the club awards being announced as well as the lotto draw. First award of the evening went to the senior player of the year who was announced as Patrick Naughton. Newly elected county board chairman Cyril Feehily presented the award. The young player of the year went to David Carrabine and the junior team player of the year went to Brian “Crouch” Howley. Clubman of the year went to our treasurer Anthony Reape.

The Hall of Fame award was one that raised the roof and was very emotional as it was awarded posthumously to Frank Kelly who passed away earlier in the month. The award was accepted by his wife Hilary and son Barnes who both said a few words. The club also made a presentation to Tom Foody in recognition of his being named Connacht Handball coach of the year, and to Alan Cawley who was named on the Nicky Rackard hurling team of the year.

The final lotto draw for the year took place. The jackpot remained however and now stands at €11550. There was one 3 number winner and that was Brendan Healy, Fiddane. There was also the draw for 3 x €100 for the yearly ticket holders, with Barbara Sommerville, Gerry Igoe and Martin Boland coming out in the draw. After the awards the partying started and a great night was had by all. Thanks to all the organisers, supporters and the staff of Muddy Burns who all combined to make a successful night.

U20B Co, Semi-final - Castleconnor 1-14 v Geevagh 2-12 AET

The team played in the county semi final of the competition on Sunday in Kilcoyne Park in Tubbercurry on Sunday. Despite a great performance from the team, they ended up on the losing side of a one point loss after extra time. The defeat can be put down to a number of reasons but the concession of a 9 point half point lead was the most contributing factor though some other issues which will not be aired definitely played a part. The one I will air is the act of removing/hiding/getting rid of (whichever was appropriate) of the goalkeepers kicking tee just after Geevagh went in front in the second half of normal time, a very unsportsmanlike act. However back to the game

The lads started well and 2 pointed frees from Niall Judge after his brother was fouled got us moving. Points from play by Brian Lynn, Kevin McDonell, and Niall Judge opened up a 0-6 v 0-1 lead halfway through the half. Then a quick move from defence so Niall Judge score a cracker of a goal and he finished the half with 2 more points for us to lead 1-8 v 0-2, with the Geevagh keeper pulling off a great save before the break.

Geevagh got off to a great start in the second and whittled the lead down to 4 points. With the breeze increasing our defence was under more pressure as the half wore on but Ronan Keane, Keith Earlis, David Carrabine, Alan Naughton and Martin Foody were strong in defence. With 9 minutes to go, Geevagh scored a fortuitous goal from a long range free that equalized the scores. At this point we had scored from Brian Lynn and Paul Sweeny, but we responded to the equalizer with a point from Niall Judge. We fell behind with 3 minutes to go but marauding midfielder Brian Howley put the teams level with a very good score to leave the score at the end of the hour, 1-12 v 2-9.

In extra time we played with the breeze in the first half and got scores from Brian Lynn and Niall Judge but Geevagh scored 3 points. The half ended a minute early but we showed our determination by dominating the final 10 minutes but try as we might we did not get a score or a free in this time. We eventually won a free in the final minute but the long range effort from Paul Sweeny ended up short though it nearly ended up in the net from Brian Howley and we were out with the score of 1-14 v 2-12.

Team: A.Kilcullen, K.Earlis, R.Keane, M.Foody, D.Carrabine, A.Naughton, B.Howley(0-1), B.Lynn(0-3), P.Sweeney(0-2), K.McDonnell(0-1), B.Judge, B.Curley, N.Judge(1-7). Sub: D.Howley.

Thanks to the players and management who put in a great effort.

Good luck

The club wish Ciarán “Spider” Barrett who leaves the country on Tuesday for the Southern hemisphere all the best on his journey. Ciarán is a member of the senior squad but was also very instrumental in the underage hurling to the club and his absence will be a huge loss to the club. On that note it was great to see Rory Junior Healy home on holidays from his work in Canada and Scotland. Another big loss to the club it would be great if the countries fortunes could turn around and all this lads were able to tog out and coach for the club all the time.

The team travelled to Kent Park on Saturday evening last for round 2 of the championship.

The team arrived and got word during the warm up that the opposition were unable to field a team, which was disapponting to say the least at such short notice. We received the points and will be hoping to progress from the group after next weekends fixtures.

U20B Castleconnor 2-9 v Buninnadden 1-11 Oct 12 2010

Buninnadden were visitors to Corballa on Sunday for the first round of the U20B championship. Perfect playing conditions lead to a very exciting and open contest with a high standard of football on view. After the opening scores from the visitors Niall Judge broke through for a goal. It was nip and tuck till the half time whistle with the teams level 1-5 a piece.

The visitors started the second like the first with a couple of points to extend their lead but a purple patch from our lads after 10 minutes saw Brian Howley score a great goal after a super pass from Brian Lynn. Despite a lot of pressure in the closing minutes we finished strong to win 2-9 v 1-11.

Mary Quinn All Ireland trophy on tour Sept 29th 2010

Donegal Ladies boss Micheal Naughton will bring the All Ireland Intermediate trophy back to his native Castleconnor on Friday night.

A special reception will be held for Naughton and members of his victorious squad at Mahony’s Bar in Corballa at around 9PM and after in Muddy Burns where refreshments will be served to all.

All are invited to come along.

This year Naughton led the Donegal girls to National league and Ulster success, and now has added his third piece of silverware to the collection

Naughton "over the moon"

Donegal boss Michael Naughton a native of Castleconnor, was euphoric after his side added the TG4 All-Ireland intermediate ladies football title to their Ulster and National League Division 2 titles at Croke Park yesterday."This is the icing on the cake," he enthused after Donegal's 2-12 to 0-16 victory over former senior kingpins Waterford.

"Earlier on this year, Donegal won their first ever National League title, then we won an Ulster title and now we did the triple. I think we're the first team ever in Donegal to win three titles and that's some achievement.

"Fair dues to Waterford, they put up one hell of a game and we know they weren't going to be easy, but our girls had the belief that they weren't going to give up and we kept fighting to the end and we did and I'm just over the moon for them"

He continued: "Goals win games and Yvonne (McMonagle) got two top-drawer goals today and maybe we should have had another one or two. But that's football, you get the rub of the green and we got it today and we're delighted with it."

The teams had Moy Davitts as visitors to Corballa on Wednesday evening an evening that turned out to be very wet and windy. However all the children turned up and put in a good performance in both of the games. On Monday evening Knockmore are visitors to Corballa for the second round of the PJ Gilmartin tournament.

U13

Last Friday week we had Eastern Harps as visitors to Corballa in the second round of the competition. Unfortunately the referee did not show and it meant that the visitors provided the referee for the game. Our lads lead till the seventh minute of injury time when a long range free from Harps went to the net off the corner of the crossbar and we ended up losing by 2 points. It was hearbreaking for our lads who put such effort into the game. Last weekend we had Tubbercurry as visitors who were stronger in most areas to our team and ended up with the victory. This weekend we travel to Achonry where we take on Coolaney/Mullinabreena in the 4th round of the competition on Friday.

Intermediate Championship:

Last Saturday evening we were in Tubbercurry for the Intermediate quarter final against Owenmore Gaels. The last time these teams met in the championship was in 1994 when we got a late goal to win. And this game proved that goals win games. However we got off to a great start with an early point from Ciarán Barrett and this was quickly followed by a goal by Brian Lynn after good work from Ronán Keane. The Gaels then got into the game with some good points, but with a minute to go till halftime we lead by two with points from Kevin Langan and two long range efforts from John O’Regan. With the last attack of the half a mixup in our defence left Gaels with an open goal which they did not squander leaving the half time score 1-5 v 1-6 to Gaels. It was nip and tuck early in the second half and we equalised with points from Kevin Langan and Ciarán Barrett. In the 12th minute Gaels scored another goal after good play and quickly followed this two minutes later when a mistake in defence left an open goal again. We were now down by 6 points and despite score 3 points, we did not break through for the all important goal with some goal mouth skirmishes turing to nothing. At the final whistle we trailed by 4 points in sun drenched Kilcoyne park. Final score: Castleconnor 1-10 v Owenmore Gaels 3-8. Team: C.Gordon, Brendan Howley, J.Tuffy, T.Cawley, P.McGuinness, M.Langan, D.Carrabine, C.Barrett, P.Kilcullen, J.O’Regan, B.Lynn, B.Curley, K.Langan, A.Cawley, R.Keane.Subs: Brian Howley, K.Tuffy, N.Judge, P.Sweeney

The year is now finished for the intermediate squad. Thanks to the players and management for their efforts all year. Best of luck to John McDonnell and Pat Naughton with their future operations and speedy recover to those with other injuries.

Underage Hurling:

A great evening for hurling and a large crowd gathered at Corballa for the clubs first ever hurling county final on Monday evening. The opponents were St.Marys Carrick-on-Shannon for the league title. We were very slow out of the blocks and were finding it hard to get the sliotar up the field in the first 10 minutes. We trailed at this point by 1-3 v 0-0. A free won by Sean Carrabine in middle of the park was sent in long and hard by Jason Tuffy and it was deflected into the net to bring us back into the game. At half time we trailed by 1-3 v 1-0. We took control early in the second half but sent a good few frees wide of the posts but we got our just rewards when Sean Carrabine rifled in to the roof of the net a free from 20m. A minute later Carrick responded with a goal of their own. A free won by Stephen Tuffy was finished off by a point from Sean Carrabine with a point, to leave a 2 point margin. With 2 minutes to go Sean tried to repeat the trick from the 20m free but this time it was blocked but Oisin Flynn bundled it over the line. In the last minute Carrick attacked and after a lot of hooking and blocking they eventually sent low to the back of the net. The final whistle went a minute later and all the lads fell to their knees. Thanks to Paul Healy and his crew for having the pitch in great shape and for all that came up to the game possibly out of curiosity but that did not stop them roaring their lungs out.

Then on Wedneday evening we travelled to Markievicz park to play the Championship final v Drumcliffe . In the first minutes of the game the lads were apprehensive but were on top in most areas. We had squandered some good chances but they relaxed when Elliot Beardshall drove a shot into the side netting to score our first goal. We were stronger physically than our opponents which helped, and Stephen Tuffy used this when he broke through the defence and drove a shot to the net. This was closely followed by a good point from Elliot. Another point from Sean Carrabine and also Jason Tuffy put us in the ascendancy. Drumcliffe then hit a purple patch and were unlucky with some frees but they eventually made our lads pay for their lack of marking closely with a goal soon followed by a goal. However a push by our own fellas before the break saw goals from midfielder Ódhran Quinn and another from full forward Elliot saw us lead 4-3 v 1-1 at the break. Our lads started the second half again strongly and Stephen Tuffy sent us on our way another goal, which was followed by another point from Sean Carrabine. Further points from Carrabine and Beardshall and a goal from Kenneth Flynn put a seal on a great night for the lads and the club.

After the game Bill O'Kelly-Lynch presented our captain on the night Sean Carrabine with the trophy. Thanks from the club to Tom Cawley, Ciarán "Spider" Barrett and Bart Barrins for all their efforts this year in making this dream a reality. Thanks to all the parents and children for their efforts. To celebrate the club brought the kids for a celebration bash and they can look forward to getting their medals later in the year. U12 B Hurling Championship Final Castleconnor 6-6 v Drumcliffe/ RP 2-2 Sept 2 2010

Markievicz Park was the place to be as our young U12 hurlers created another bit of history by winning their first county title and did it with a bit of style too. The Park was in excellent condition and the Summer like conditions made good hurling a lot easier to achieve.

In the first minutes of the game the lads were apprehensive but were on top in most areas. We had squandered some good chances but they relaxed when Elliot Beardshall drove a shot into the side netting.

Drumcliffe were defending a lot better than in first half and they got another goal which was followed by a quick point but at this stage our lads were very confident and further points from Sean and Elliot and a goal from Kenneth Flynn put a seal on a great night for the lads and the club.

After the game Bill O'Kelly-Lynch presented our captain on the night Sean Carrabine with the trophy. Sean in his speech thanked the lads and managers for their efforts all year, the parents for making sure they were always there and commisserated with Drumcliffe, offering three cheers to their efforts.

Like Monday evening the lads were a credit to club. Kenneth Flynn was assured with his puck outs, could do nothing about the goal and scored one at the other end. Colm Naughton had his best game of the year and it is hard to believe he has 3 years left in this grade. Benny Foody striking and handball skills stood out. James Boland was another one who had his best game of the year with Paul Flynn providing great relief for the defence with his very long clearances. In midfield Ódhran got the goal he deserved for his great working back. Sean worked as hard as ever and his focus was immense. Our Enniscrone imports Jason and Stephen worked hard all night, with Jason's expertise from the sideline cuts enhanced and Stephen showing great forceful running all night. Oisin Flynn who has 4 years left at the grade kept working hard all night and Elliot was the typical strong full forward. Dáire Barrins was assured when he came on in the second half with 3 years left in the grade will be moving out the field.

Thanks from the club to Tom Cawley, Ciarán "Spider" Barrett and Bart Barrins for all their efforts this year in making this dream a reality. Thanks to all the parents and children for their efforts. U12B League Hurling Final Castleconnor 3-1 v St.Marys Carrick-on-Shannon 3-3 30Aug 2010

A great evening for hurling and a large crowd gathered at Corballa for the clubs first ever hurling county final on Monday evening. The opponents were St.Marys Carrick-on-Shannon who we beat earlier slimly in the league on an evening that was of biblical bad weather. However the final was to prove a tenser and tighter affair.

It was an 11-a-side game with Dermot Walshe the referee. Our lads had a changed attitude after that and with the large crowd behind them they hooked, blocked and put their bodies on the line all over the park.

With 2 minutes to go Sean tried to repeat the trick from the 20m free but this time it was blocked but 8 year old Oisin Flynn bundled it over the line. We did not learn the lesson from earlier though and let Carrick get an attack going and gave a free away. This time they went for goal but depite Kenneth Flynn and Odhran Quinn combining to save it, it was eventually sent low to the back of the net.

The final whistle went a minute later and all the lads fell to their knees. They were unfortunate, but it was great to see the way they have come on in 6 months and their passion and stickwork was a sight to behold and kept the crowd on their toes all evening. Thanks to Paul Healy and his crew for having the pitch in great shape and for all that came up to the game possibly out of curiousity but that did not stop them roaring their lungs out. Thanks to St.Marys for making the long journey in and no doubt the 2 evenly matched teams will meet again in the future.

Kenneth Flynn had great puck outs all night. Colm Naughton and Benny Foody were very efficent in the full back line. James Boland hooked and blocked and Paul Flynns long range frees and tackling was excellent. Odhran Quinn made the middle his own whilst Sean Carrabine was the human version of the Duracell bunny. The 2 Tuffy brothers Jason and Stephen from Enniscrone never gave up and were always available whilst Elliot Bearsdhall and Oisin Flynn were always a threat when the ball came in. With 2 eight years old playing and another 7 on the line (Dáire Barrins, Ruardhri Gallagher, Ronan Wilson, Rian Winters, Daniel Ruane, Owen Gillard, Liam Donnegan) the future looks good for these youngster.

We know have to pick ourselves up for the Championship final which takes place on Wednesday evening at 7 in Markievicz Park

Team: Kenneth Flynn, Colm Naughton, Benny Foody, James Boland,Paul Flynn, Odhran Quinn, Sean Carrabine(1-1), Jason Tuffy(1-0), Stephen Tuffy, Elliot Bearsdhall, Oisin Flynn(1-0)

IFC Rd2: Castleconnor 1-11 v St.Michaels 0-7 30th August 2010

Last Saturday evening we travelled to Curry for the second round of the championship. Our opponents were St.Michaels but both teams had already qualified for the quarter-finals with top spot of the group up for grabs. After losing David Fox, Karl Tuffy and Niall Judge in the last number of weeks to injury never mind Norman Fox the team was rejigged for the fixture.

It took the team a while to get going and in the first half we played into a strong wind. Michaels were first on the scoresheet and built up a lead of 0-4 v 0-1 with our point from Alan Cawley. In the last 10 minutes of the half we got our shooting boots on with points from Alan Cawley, Paul Kilcullen and Brian Curley who was on the end of a good move up the field and was going for goal. Despite this we trailed 0-5 v 0-4 at the interval.

Like the first half we were slow out of the blocks with Michaels pulling ahead further 0-7 v 0-5 with 14 minutes to go with Kevin Langan getting our point but he was to get 3 more to put us into the lead. Alan Cawley scored a monster point to increase our lead with David Carrabine running through to score also. Another point from Paul Kilcullen and a goal from Pat McGuinness with 3 minutes to go wrapped up the game.

However Pat Naughton went down with a very serious knee injury which put a major dampener on proceedings and at the time of going to print it has not been determined how bad the injury is.

Final score: Castleconnor 1-11 v St.Michaels 0-7.

Team: C.Gordon, Brendan Howley, J.Tuffy, T.Cawley, P.McGuinness(1-0), D.Carrabine(0-1), C.Barrett, P.Kilcullen(0-1), P.Naughton, B.Lynn, A.Cawley(0-3), B.Curley(0-1), M.Langan, K.Langan(0-4), R.Keane.Subs: Brian Howley, F.Barrett, B.Foody.

Next weekend we play Owenmore Gaels in the quarter-finals on Saturday evening at 5pm in Kilcoyne Park. Please continue to come and support.

25/30 year anniversary of county Junior Championship

Right after the championship game in Curry it was a mad rush to Muddy Burns for the celebration night to honour the teams of the 1980 who won our first ever county title and 1985 who were celebrating their silver anniversary of the county junior double. Over 100 people sat for a meal for the two teams panels and their partners. Club Chairman Darren Ruane welcomed all the old warriors and told them to enjoy themselves late into the night. In the background the videos of the 1985 finals played much to the enjoyment of all young and old with plenty of ribbing for those follicily challenged. After the meal organizing committee chair John Judge gave a quick talk after which Bert Barrins presented the panels with a piece of crystal each and gave a small speech on behalf of the management of those teams who also included Tommy Holmes, Mick Mahoney(RIP) and Padraic Healy(RIP). Thanks to all who made this a very very enjoyable night that went on well into Sunday, those that travelled long distances, the fundraisers, Mark and Majella Carr of Muddys, Hilary Barrins Kelly for the videos and the committee, John Judge, Bert Barrins, Sean Gordon, Frank Kelly and Michael Mahoney.

Div 5 Rd 11: Castleconnor 1-10 v Tubbercurry 5-16 26th July, 2010

Last Friday evening we travelled to table toppers Tubbercurry. This was a game where we looked very good in the first half but did not turn up for the second.

Tubber raced into a 2-2 lead after ten minutes but then our lads showed great fight to score 8 points on the trot and equalise. However Tubber hit back with a goal and a number of points but just before the break, Patrick Cleary scored his third goal in 3 games to leave us trailing 3-5 v 1-8.

Intermediate Championship:

The team are currently preparing for the first round of the intermediate championship.

Senior League Division 5:

Drumcliffe made the long journey to Corballa last Friday week. Our lads were hoping to make it two wins on the spin. The game got going with our team having the fairly strong breeze blowing into the church end of the field. Despite this the visitors made the early running but they hit a number of bad wides. Eventually we took the lead with a point from play by Ciaran Barrett and he followed this up with a second. Then David Fox hit 2 points in a minute both good points from play. Brian Lynn hit a close in free and then we made a decisive breakthrough, a good run by Ronan Keane through the centre, put Bart Barrins running through and from the 13m line he crashed to the net. Drumcliffe then got 2 points from play but we finished with one from a long range free by Brian Howley and then an another from the same player after an excellent move all the way from our keeper. Half time score was 1-8 v 0-2.

Like Drumcliffe in the first half we had a lot of possession but could not convert though Ciarán Barrett was unlucky with a goal bound effort. A free from out on the sideline by Brian Lynn increased the lead. However we went to sleep for the next 10 minutes and when the visitors scored from a penalty and 3 quick points our lead was down to 3 points. It was at this point that Colin Gordon entered the fray and firstly he scored an easy free but followed it up with a penalty that he won himself and a minute later scored a good point from play from out on the right. Ciaran Barrett then followed with 2 more points from play the last from good interplay with Barrins and Gordon. In the last minute a good move with Shane Feeney, Darragh Gilmartin put Brian Howley on the run towards goal but his effort just went wide of the post. Team: Anthony Kilcullen, Ultan McGranahan, Pat Flynn, Kieran Naughton, Ronan Keane, Martin Foody, Frank Barrett, David Fox(0-2), Brian Lynn(0-3), Ciaran Barrett(0-4), Brian Howley(0-2), Bart Barrins(1-0), Pat Cleary. Subs: Diarmuid Howley, Colin Gordon(1-2), Shane Feeney, Darragh Gilmartin, David Kelly.

Last Friday evening we travelled to table toppers Tubbercurry. This was a game where we looked very good in the first half but did not turn up for the second. Tubber raced into a 2-2 lead after ten minutes but then our lads showed great fight to score 8 points on the trot and equalise. U-12:

The team is preparing for the county blitzes in the next few weeks

U14

The team took part in the first round of the U14 9-a-side competition last Friday evening in Ballymote. The team put in two great performances against Geevagh and Easkey gaining some revenge for the championship loss to our neighbours and progressed to the second round of the competition which takes place this Friday evening.

U-16:

The team were away to Coolaney/Mullinabreena last Monday evening. This game was a thriller and was in the melting pot right up to the final whistle but thankfully we came out on the right side of the result in a high scoring game of 3-13 v 3-7. The team have now qualified for the quarter final which is a home game against Calry on August 7th.

Hurling:

Training continues at the pitch on Monday evenings at 7pm. It was a momentous evening last Wednesday week as after months of hard work and training, the clubs U12s became the first ever Castleconnor hurling team. It is one small step but when the final whistle went on Wednesday evening everyone there was in euphoria.

The game was an 11-a-side game. We had to use two 8 year olds in Dáire Barrins and Óisin Flynn who both acquitted themselves brillantly. Despite the scoreline, the defence were never under severe pressure but they responded very well with Benny Foody James Boland, Paul and Kenneth Flynn keeping calm at all times. In the centre Sean Carrabine and Oran Quinn showed great stickwork and positioning sense. In the forwards the Enniscrone brothers of Jason and Stephen Tuffy along with Elliot Beardshall were a constant menace.

The first half was a tense affair as this was also Drumcliffes first game. Despite going 2 points down we were on top in most positions and apart from our shooting all looked good. Eventually Jason Tuffy struck a long range point for us to leave us trailing by a point at the break 0-2 v 0-1.

We took the lead early in the second half when Sean Carrabine drove to the net however the home team responded with 2 goals of their own. A quick response from our lads saw Elliot Beardshall score with a low drive. A great long range free from Drumcliffe cemented their lead. Oran Quinn made a great clearance off the line at this time with Benny Foody and Paul Flynn clearing up the wings. Eventually the sliotar fell to Sean Carrabine near halfway and he made a great solo run through the defence before eventually letting the sliotar fall to his foot and striking it into the top corner.

With 4 minutes to go there was some desparate defending with the Tuffys doing some great hooking, Oisin tigerish on the ground, Oran hlping his defence and Kenneth and James swinging on all ground balls. With the long puckouts from Dáire we held out and at the final whistle there was great joy.

Thanks to all that travelled to the game and provided lifts. Thanks to the management who put in a lot of time and effort but most of all thanks to the players who turned out all year. Team : Dáire Barrins, Benny Foody, Kenneth Flynn, James Boland, Paul Flynn, Sean Carrabine, Oran Quinn, Jason Tuffy, Stephen Tuffy, Elliot Beardshall, Óisin Flynn.

Last Wednesday evening we hosted our first hurling game when St.Marys Carrick-on-Shannon. It was a wild evening weather wise but the game was exciting with some good hurling from both sides. With holidays it was decided to play 10-a-side. We played against the elements in the first half and only trailed by a goal. Early in the second we scored two good points by Sean Carrabine and moved ahead with 3 goals. However the visitors struck a goal to leave the game tense till the end. Team Dáire Barrins, Benny Foody, Kenneth Flynn, James Boland, Sean Carrabine, Jason Tuffy, Stephen Tuffy, Colm Naughton, Óisin Flynn. This Wednesday we host Calry on Wednesday evening at 7pm. The coaching is being done by Ciaran Barrett, Tom Cawley, Alan Cawley and Bart Barrins. Come out and try it. Helmets are still available for the princely sum of €35. U-16s are asked to train on Wednesday evenings in Quigabar with Western Gaels.

U12B Hurling league Castleconnor 3-2 v St.Marys, Carrick-on-Shannon 2-0 26-7-2010

We had a lot of possession but try as we might we could not score.

Early in the second we scored two good points by Sean Carrabine and moved ahead with 3 goals from Cian.

Div 5 Rd 10 Castleconnor 2-13 v Drumcliffe/RPoint 1-6 16th July, 2010

Drumcliffe made the long journey to Corballa on Friday evening. This was his 3rd attempt with the visitors keeper making 2 excellent saves earlier. Drumcliffe then got 2 points from play but we finished with one from a long range free by Brian Howley and then an another from the same player after an excellent move all the way from our keeper. Half time score was 1-8 v 0-2.

Like Drumcliffe in the first half we had a lot of possession but could not convert though Ciarán Barrett was unlicky with a goal bound effort.

This was a good team performance with everyone putting their back to the grindstone when needed and good performances from Pat Flynn, Kieran Naughton, Diarmuid Howley, Marting Foody and Frank Barrett.

Team: Anthony Kilcullen, Ultan McGranahan, Pat Flynn, Kieran Naughton, Ronan Keane, Martin Foody, Frank Barrett, David Fox(0-2), Brian Lynn(0-3), Ciaran Barrett(0-4), Brian Howley(0-2), Bart Barrins(1-0), Pat Cleary. Subs: Diarmuid Howley, Colin Gordon(1-2), Shane Feeney, Darragh Gilmartin, David Kelly.

U12B Hurling lg Rd1: Castleconnor 3-1 v Drumcliffe 2-3 July 15th, 2010

It was a momentous evening. After months of hard work and training, the clubs U12s became the first ever Castleconnor hurling team. It is one small step but when the final whistle went on Wednesday evening everyone there was in euphoria.

The game was an 11-a-side game. We had to use 2 8 year olds in Dáire Barrins and Óisin Flynn who both acquitted themselves brillantly.

Despite going 2 points down we were on top in most positions and apart from our shotting all looked good.

Next week it is a home game.

Div 5 Rd 7 Castleconnor 1-8 v St.Farnans 0-15

This game was played in Corballa last Saturday before we all headed to Pearse stadium the next morning. The visitors started the better and were leading 0-6 v 0-2 with 10 minutes of the half remaining but a strong finish to the half as we had the breeze meant we went in leading 1-6 v 0-6 with Colin Gordon converting a penalty after Eoin Flynn was taken down when rounding the keeper.

With 10 minutes to go the game was level but the visitors midfield dominance told and they won on a scoreline 0-15 v 1-8.

The team now face Easkey in the final with the details to be confirmed.

Div 5 Rd2: Castleconnor 0-8 v Eastern Harps 5-16 June 26th, 2010

The team started off well in this game and had the majority of possession in the game for the first 10 minutes but had only a point from Barry Judge to show for it. Then the visitors hit a purple patch and struck 2-4 in a 10 minute spell with the first goal resulting from a mix up in the defence and the second when our keeper made a timely interception but the rebound fell to a waiting Harps player. By the half time break we trailed by 3-8 v 0-3 with further points coming from Brian Howley.

The second half was a more even affair but two bad goals in the last 10 minutes took some of the shine off the effort shown by the players in the second half with some good running, covering pack and excellent fielding from Alan Naughton in the middle. With points from Barry Judge, Brian Lynn, Frank Barrett and a 45 from Bart Barrins, the team finished better than the first half display.

Team: B.Feeney, U.McGranahan, P.Flynn, A.Kilcullen, D.Gilmartin, D.Fox, M.Foody, A.Naughton, B.Lynn(0-1), A.Mullarkey, Brian Howley(0-3), F.Barrett(0-1), S.Feeney, P.Cleary, B.Judge(0-2). Subs: B.Barrins(0-1), E.Flynn

Div 2 Rd 12: Castleconnor 1-13 v Eastern Harps 1-14 June 22th, 2010

With the conditions perfect and the sun shinning in Keash, it was a day when the team was not at the races. We started alright with points from play John and Karl Tuffy. At one stage in the half we lead 0-6 v 0-5 with Niall Judge with a brace and Alan Cawley and Kevin Langan. At the half time break we were down 0-8 v 0-6.

Harps extended their lead to 4 right after the break and despite points from Kevin Langan and Patrick Naughton, going into the last number of minutes we were3 points down. Kieran Spider Barrett picked up a bad shoulder injury and this meant that there was a significant amount of injury time. In this time we reduced the lead to one when Harps struck for a goal but Patrick Naughton scored a scorcher of a goal with time almost up and despite points from frees from Kevin Langan, we left the comeback too late and lost 1-14 v 1-13.

Team: C.Gordon, Brendan Howley, P.McGuinness, T.Cawley, K.Barrett, M.Langan, D.Fox, P.Naughton(1-1), J.O'Regan, J.Tuffy(0-1), K.Langan(0-7), K.Tuffy(0-1), A.Cawley(0-1), N.Judge(0-2), B.Lynn. Subs: A.Naughton, F.Barrett.

Next weekend is a free week due to the Connacht semi-final in Galway

Div 2 Rd 11: Castleconnor 0-13 v Tubbercurry 0-9 June 15th 2010

This weekend we had Tubbercurry as visitors to Corballa for the 11th round of the division 2 league. A good evening for football. We got off to a good start with two quick points from Kevin Langan and Brian Lynn. Tubber responded and it was nip and tuck till the half time break where we lead 0-7 v 0-6, with the scores coming from Pat Naughton, Alan Cawley and three from Kevin Langan.

We extended that lead to 3 early in the second half with points from Brian Howley and Kevin Langan, but the visitors narrowed the gap. However we showed great strength and character and pushed into a four point lead with minutes to go with points from Alan Cawley, Karl Tuffy and Kevin Langan, holding on for a deserved victory on the scoreline of 0-13 v 0-9.

Team: C.Gordon, Brendan Howley, J.Tuffy, T.Cawley, D.Fox, M.Lnagan, C.Barrett, P.Naughton(0-1), J.O’Regan, A.Cawley(0-2), K.Langan(0-7), B.Lynn(0-1), Brian Howley(0-1), K.Tuffy(0-1), F.Barrett. Subs: M.Foody.

Good luck to St.Pats in the rest of the tournament. On Friday evening the county football coaches were at the pitch to give a lesson to the youngsters. It was great to see them all out trying their hardest to impress. Special thanks to county captain Charlie Harrison whose hand must be sore from all the autographs he signed. It was very much appreciated. Training will take place on Friday this week as usual. Come out and see it sometime. It has been remarked a number of times how wonderful it is to see so many youngsters all enjoying themselves, learning the games. And if you have someone who you would like to become involved, just turn up, it is never too late.

Well done to club senior players Alan and Tom Cawley who have been playing in the Nicky Rackard cup for Sligo.

Div 5 Rd 4: Castleconnor 0-5 v Shamrock Gaels 3-20 June 12th, 2010

The division 5 team went to Coola on Friday evening for this fourth round clash. Despite starting well and holding our own we trailed 2-8 v 0-1 at the break, missing two good goal chances in the process.

Things did not improve after the break, not helped by their keeper making another miracle save, though this would have made no difference to the end result. We ended up losing 3-20 v 0-5. Alan Naughton, Martin Foody, Kevin Barrins, Gerry Holmes and Anthony Kilcullen tried hard throughout.

Team: B.Feeney, A.Kilcullen, P.Flynn, K.Naughton, D.Gilmartin K.Cawley, M.Foody, A.Naughton, Brian Howley(0-1), B.Judge, G.Holmes, A.Mullarkey, P.Maughan(0-2), K.Barrins(0-1), B.Kelly(0-1), Subs: P.Cleary, F.Barrett.

Next weekend table toppers Eastern Harps are visitors to Corballa on Friday evening at 8pm.

Div 2 Rd 4: Castleconnor 0-6 v St.Marys 2-9 May 31st, 2010

This weekend we travelled to Kent Park in Sligo to take on St.Marys in the 10th round of the senior league. With the injury list getting bigger ever week more and more of the division 5 team are getting their chance to shine on the higher stage.

David Lynn made his first start for the seniors on Saturday but unfortunately he went off with a serious knee injury after 6 minutes. Alan Cawley started the scoring with a long range effort. Kevin Langan and Niall Judge who himself came on due to the shortage of players both scored points to leave us leading at the break 0-5 v 0-2.

However we were facing the strong breeze in the second half though we got the first score of the half with an Alan Cawley point from a free. However this was the last time we scored for the game. Marys took the lead after 11 minutes and then there was a scoreless spell but with 10 minutes remaining broke through for a goal and scored another 90 seconds later. With Niall Judge and John McDonnell both being helped off things did not improve losing 2-09 v 0-6.

Team: C.Gordon, Brendan Howley, P.McGuinness, T.Cawley, D.Fox, D.Carrabine, A.Naughton, P.Naughton, J.O’Regan,D.Lynn, K.Langan(0-3), B.Lynn, A.Cawley(0-2), R.Keane, Brian Howley. Subs: Niall Judge(0-1), Barnes Kelly.

Div5 Rd 3: Castleconnor 2-11 v Coolaney/Mullinabreena 2-11 May 27th, 2010

One thing about the division 5 team the last number of years is, they never ever stop or give up. With about 4 minutes to go we trailed by 6 but the lads kept going and got a result out of nothing.

The game started well with two points from play from Colin Gordon but the visitors found their feet and moved into a 6-2 lead. Barnes Kelly scored for us after a good move down the field. By the half time break we were trailing 0-7 v 0-5 with our final two scores coming from a free by Colin Gordon and a scorching shot from Austin Mullarkey

At the start of the half the visitors took control and were rewarded with a goal. However points from John O'Regan, Barnes Kelly and Colin Gordon meant we had reduced the lead to 3 points. However the visitors moved the lead back out to 6 with another goal. We responded with a long range point from O'Regan and a Gordon free.

With the scores at 2-10 v 0-10 and 4 minutes plus injury time remaining things changed. After a surging run by Ronan Keane, Paul "Cubby" Maughan was at the end of the move to finish to the net, a harder opportunity than an earlier miss. From the kickout David Lynn got reward for a fine evening with an outside of the foot point from 30m. We won a line ball and Colin Gordon ball into the full forward line was caught by the very impressive John O'Regan and he finished to the net to leave us leading by 1 point. The visitors went down the field from the kickout and won a free which they pointed to finish the match at 2-11 v 2-11.

This was a good team effort and as said earlier their never say die spirit brought them back into a game we were lucky to get anything out of. Get well soon to keeper Anto Kilcullen who took a bad knock to his knee cap.

Team: A.Kilcullen, D.Gilmartin, P.Flynn, U.McGranahan, M.Foody, K.Naughton, A.Naughton, J.O'Regan(1-2), R.Keane, D.Lynn(0-1), C.Gordon(0-4), F.Barrett, B.Kelly(0-2), P.Cleary, A.Mullarkey(0-1). Subs: B.Judge, P.Maughan(1-1), B.Feeney, K.Maye.

Community Games

Well done to all the children who took part in the community games in the pitch on Sunday last. A great day was had by all. Best wishes are sent to underage players Ross Gilmartin and Aoife Durkan who represent Sligo in the Art and Modelling All Ireland finals in Athlone next week.

Div 2 Rd 9: Castleconnor 1-9 v Shamrock Gaels 2-12, May24th 2010

We travelled to play fellow table toppers Shamrock Gaels in Coola on Sunday morning. The conditions were perfect for football though very warm. With the injuries suffered last week it meant a changed team from the victory over Easkey. The team lead 4 v 2 midway through the half but we let in a sloppy goal at this point and went in at half time losing 1-5 v 0-5.

The first ten minutes of the second half we were beaten in almost every position and trailed 2-8 v 0-5 but an excellent self made goal by John Tuffy and two quick points brought it back to a 4 point game with 10 mins to go but the home side finished stronger and won with the score of 2-12 v 1-9. Get well soon to Ciarán Barrett who had to be carried off after 10 minutes.

Team: C.Gordon, Brendan Howley, P.McGuinness, T.Cawley, C.Barrett, M.Langan, D.Fox, D.Carrabine,, P.Naughton, J.Tuffy, K.Langan, R.Kean, B.Lynn, A.Cawley(0-1), B.Curley. Subs: Brian.Howley, Barnes Kelly.

Div 5 Rd 2: Castleconnor 1-9 v Easkey 3-13 May 21, 2010

In an ironic way the division 5 team had the second fixture of the weekend when we travelled to Easkey who where visitors to Corballa the night before. Yet again there was a strong breeze but no rain.

Martin Foody opened the scoring for us, but Easkey took over for 10 minutes and we were down 5 points despite having the assistance of the breeze. Then a number of points from Brian Foody and 3 monster points from John O’Regan and one from Brian Howley brought us back in reach and by the half time break we were losing 1-8 v 0-8.

Like the first half we were asleep at the start of the second half and lost the game in this period. Our only point in the half was from Patrick Cleary. The team however showed good resillience and got their reward with a great goal from Matin Foody following a great team move. The final score was 1-9 v 3-13.

Team: A.Kilcullen, U.McGranahan, R.Keane, D.Gilmartin, D.Howley, K.Cawley, M.Foody(1-1), J.O'Regan(0-3), Brian Howley(0-1), B.Lynn(0-3), G.Holmes, D.Lynn, F.Barrett, P.Cleary(0-1), B.Curley. Subs: M.Langan, B.Feeney. B.Judge, B.Barrins.

We have a home game on Friday evening at 7:30pm, against Coolaney/Mullinabreena

Div2 Rd8: Castleconnor 2-5 v Easkey 0-8 May 17th, 2010

Easkey were the visitors to Corballa on Saturday evening for the 8th round of the division 2 league. A horrible evening for football with a strong wind towards the village end accompanied by constant rain made this a contest not for the faint hearted. We started well against the breeze and 2 Paul Kilcullen frees had us in an early lead but by the half time break we were losing 0-3 v 0-2.

We equalised early in the second half from another Paul Kilcullen point and soon after we were in the driving seat when Kevin Langan drove at the Easkey defence and put Niall Judge through who chipped to the Easkey net. This was the last involvement from Niall as he was injured in scoring the goal. The team then lost corner back Tom Cawley also to injury but his brother Alan scored a great point off his left peg to keep the gap to 3 points.

Easkey fought back and brought the score to 2 points but a great move down the field saw John O’Regan sidefoot past the Easkey goalie to extend our lead to 5 with 10 minutes to play. Paul Kilcullen then left the field injured and as we were now reduced to 14 men due to two yellow cards, we were under pressure but the defence held firm and we won 2-5 v 0-8.

The team are now in a 4 way tie at the top of division 2.

Team: C.Gordon, Brendan Howley, P.McGuinness, T.Cawley, C.Barrett, D.Carrabine, D.Fox, P.Kilcullen(0-3), P.Naughton, A.Cawley(0-1), K.Langan, R.Keane,(0-1),B.Lynn, N.Judge(1-0), B.Curley. Subs: J.O'Regan(1-0), Brian.Howley, John Tuffy.

Div 2 Rd7: Castleconnor 1-14 v Drumcliffe/RPoint 0-9, May 9th, 2010

Last Saturday evening we played another north division team when Drumcliffe/Rosses Points were visitors to Corballa. Despite a strong gale blowing into the Ballina end it was a good evening for football. We got off to a good start with a point in the opening minute from Brian Curley from a long ball in, using the advantage of the wind. We continued to press but at the half time break our lead was only 2 points 0-7 v 0-5 causing some concern for the supporters with the strong wind to face in the second half.

However the team throughout the field upped their game which was best shown in the goal we scored from Kevin Langan with over half the team involved in the move including all the full forward line. John McDonnell picked up an injury after this but we continued to pile on the scores despite the breeze. The visitors tried hard but some wayward shooting left us with the win on a score of 1-15 v 0-9. The midfield can be very happy with their hours work and the forwards both attacking and defending when they did not have the ball was a great source of encouragement.

Team C.Gordon, Brendan.Howley, P.McGuinness, T.Cawley, C.Barrett, D.Carrabine, R.Keane, P.Kilcullen, P.Naughton, A.Cawley, K.Langan, B.Lynn, B.Curley, N.Judge, J.McDonnell. Subs: Brian.Howley, F.Barrett, D.Fox.

Senior League Division 2:

The team travelled to Grange on Saturday evening for the latest round of the senior league. Few travelling could have expected the rout that was before them. Like last week we started in a flash but unlike the week before Kevin Langans piledriver just went by the upright. Another chance for goal was spurned a minute later but from there till the break we were on the back foot with only 3 scores all frees from Kevin Langan. At the break we trailed 0-13 v 0-3. With the game effectively over the second half was a looser yet closer fought affair with the home side grabbing two goals near the end and ourselves scoring a number of points. We also saw a penalty go wide off the post though this would have made no difference to the end result. On a positive note a number of players made their senior debut for the year like Diarmuid Howley, John Tuffy and Barnes Kelly. The team will learn from this no doubt and the inclusion of so many young players certainly looks good for a bigger and stronger panel.Team: C.Barrett, B.Howley, J.Tuffy, T.Cawley, M.Foody, D.Carrabine, R.Keane, P.Kilcullen, P.Naughton, A.Cawley, K.Langan, B.Lynn, B.Kelly, N.Judge, J.McDonnell. Senior League Division 5:

Bunninadden were visitors on Sunday for the first round of the eagerly awaited division 5 league. The visitors brought a strong team with them and it was agreed beforehand to play a 15 a side game which definitely added to the ocassion.

We got off to a bright start with an early goal from Brian Lynn after a good run. However this was cancelled out soon after as a mix up in our final defensive line lead to an easy goal for the visitors. Despite us playing with the strong breeze we found ourselves trailing coming up to half time by 5 points but good scores from John McDonnell, Brian Lynn and Brian Howley, kept us in touch at the break losing 2-4 v 1-4.

Facing the strong breeze it did not look good for us but our half back line and midfield bacame dominant and John McDonnell reduced the gap early on. Midway through the half Mickin Langan was brough down when through on goal but the penalty by young McDonnell came off the post. We continued to pressurise and the visiting goalkeeper made a number of fine saves, from Gerry Holmes, Frank Barrett and young John McGuinness before Austin Mullarkey scored a scorcher of a point. However the strong breeze meant that the visitors were able to clear at length and ended winning on a scorline of 2-8 v 1-7. The team showed up very well in the second half and it will have gained a lot from this game both from the game time and experience. With a good mix of youth and "experience" it is hoped that the team will have a winning season. Team: A.Kilcullen, U.McGranahan, P.Flynn, D.Gilmartin, A.Naughton, R.Keane, M.Foody, J.O'Regan, Brian Howley, B.Lynn, G.Holmes, J.McDonnell, F.Barrett, P.Cleary, B.Kelly. Subs: M.Langan, A.Mullarkey, J.McGuinness, B.Feeney.

We travel to Easkey on Sunday for the second round of the league with throw in at 2:30pm

Race Night:

The club held a very successful race night in Mahoneys on Saturday night after the senior game. All races were sold and the auction races were very good craic. U-16:

The Under 16 team defeated Owenmore Gaels/Ballisodare in round 6 of the Division 1 league on Monday evening April 26th last at Corballa. Final Score 3-10 to 2-10. The team got off to a stronger start and led 3-4 to 0-7 at the interval. Owenmore/Ballisodare fought back hard in the second half to leave an exciting conclusion to the game. Last Monday week May 3rd the team had a comprehensive 0-16 to 1-03 win over St. Molaise Gaels. The team await fixtures for the upcoming A Championship and continue to train.

Minor:

The Minor team traveled to Coola to take on Shamrock Gaels in round 6 of the league on Friday evening week last. A fine game of football was played in wonderful conditions. The team led 0-6 to 0-4 after twenty minutes and had two great goal chances which were both deflected by the Gaels men. Castleconnor trailed 0-8 to 0-7 at the break and a bad ten minute spell early in the second half proved costly as time was not on our side at the end when we lost out by two points. Well taken scores came from Kevin McDonnell, John McDonnell, Paul Sweeney and Eoin Flynn with Barry Judge being introduced at half time, his first appearance after a stint of almost nine months on the sideline. Final score was 2-10 to 1-15. On Thursday evening last Geevagh were visitors to St. Brendan’s GAA Park in the final round of the league. Div 5 Rd 1: Castleconnor 1-7 v Buninnadden 2-8, May 4th 2010

Subs: M.Langan, A.Mullarkey, J.McGuinness, B.Feeney

Div 2 Rd6: Castleconnor 0-9 v St.Molaise Gaels 2-17, May 3rd, 2010

The team will learn from this no doubt and the inclusion of so many young players certainly looks good for a bigger and stronger panel.

Team: C.Barrett, B.Howley, J.Tuffy, T.Cawley, M.Foody, D.Carrabine, R.Keane, P.Kilcullen, P.Naughton, A.Cawley, K.Langan, B.Lynn, B.Kelly, N.Judge, J.McDonnell. Subs: D.Howley, J.O'Regan, F.Barrett.

U16A League, Castleconnor 3-10 v Ballisodare 2-10, April 26th, 2010

The under 16 team defeated Owenmore Gaels/Ballisodare in round 7 of the league this evening at home.

The team led 3-4 to 0-7 at the interval and it was a very close competitive game in the end.

Best wishes to Stephen Curley on his knee injury and lets hope he is back flying around again soon

Senior League Division 2:

Castleconnor played host to St.Marys on Sunday last in round 3 of the league. In good conditions this game went right to the wire. Castleconnor were on top in midfield and their forward line was out in front but we were not converting enough chances in the first half. At the half time whistle we trailed by 2 points but would have the benefit of the breeze in the second half, with the score at the break 1-3 v 0-4. A quick bit of thinking by Brian Lynn setup John McDonnell for his first ever score as a senior with a goal. Marys fought back but we moved further ahead with a good team goal finished by Kevin Langan. With time almost up Marys got a goal of their own to narrow the gap to a point but from the resulting kickout a great catch by Norman Fox and a quick pass to Kevin Langan who put the game beyond the visitors and we won 2-10 v 2-8. Team C.Gordon, C.Barrett, P.McGuinness, B.Howley, D.Fox, P.Naughton, T.Cawley, K.Tuffy, P.Kilcullen, B.Lynn, K.Langan, B.Curley, N.Fox, A.Cawley, D.Carrabine. Subs: J.McDonnell. Castleconnor played host to Shamrock Gaels on Saturday evening last in round 2 of the league. In good conditions this game went right to the wire. Castleconnor were on top in midfield and their forward line was out in front but we were not converting enough chances in the first half. A very well worked goal by Kevin Langan after good Brian Curley work put us back into the lead which we held till the final minute when Gaels worked a goal. Congratulations

Congratulations to club member and former senior team player Joe Cawley who last week won the Cyprus marathon. It was a great achievement for Joe and was just reward for all the work he has put into his running since retiring from football. Joe is running the Connemara Ultra marathon in a few weeks time and is raising money by sponsorship for the Western Gaels hurling club.

Sponsorship

Firstly thanks to Ambrose Kilcullen who sponsored a new set of footballs for the senior and junior teams. It is greatly appreciated.

Also the pitch was a lot more colourful on Saturday evening at the division 2 game with the new advertising hoardings being put in place. Thanks to all those sponsors. We will produce a list of these kind benefactors in a few weeks time.

Div 2 Rd 2: Castleconnor 1-10 v Shamrock Gaels 1-9, March 28th, 2010

The Senior team got their first two points of the league this evening in an entertaining game at home. Castleconnor led for most the game and always looked that bit better, and should have won by more in the end.

Report to follow.

McCann returning to handball action after a long lay off due to injury. McCann was unlucky to lose to the Galway man playing in his home court after a 3 game marathon battle. The final score was 21-17, 10-21, 10-21. Ballymote’s other representative Martin Golden went down in straight games to Galway’s Denis Phelan. Collooney’s Shane Bruen was defeated by Kevin Craddock from Salthill in the Junior singles contest on Friday evening last in Ballaghaderreen.

Clubman of the year for 2009 was senior club player Michael Langan who along with Barnes Kelly had a big role in the learning of the current u14 team.
