The club AGM took place on Sunday in the community centre in front of a large attendance. Chariman Darren Ruane gave a good report on the year and thanked all players, parents and supporters for their assistance throughout the year.
The meeting was informed that at underage level the club competed in 6 county finals in football and hurling and with this in mind a coaching committee was formed with Paul Kilcullen it's chair. It congratulated the handball club on it's great successes at county and provincial level and urged more to take part. As the GAA club is a voluntary organisation he urged more people to volunteer with teams or even to provide lifts for underage teams to games, which would be greatly appreciated.
After the treasurer and secretary reports the election of officers for 2012 took place with the following elected.

The under twenty team had a comprehensive victory over Tourlestrane in the opening round of the championship at Tourlestrane on Saturday evening last.
A great team performance was displayed from the team and they will be hoping to do the same again next weekend when we face Drumcliffe/Rosses Point in what will be a tough encounter.

Minor Champ C Final: Castleconnor 1-10 v Drumcliffe 0-12

This was a real ding dong affair with the result in doubt till the final whistle and for some time after until confirmed by the sideline officials and referee. It was played on Saturday where there was a strong breeze that went into the Cloonacool corner of the field. However the breeze did not seem to be any benefit to either team but actually caused havoc at free time.
The first half was very even. Having to field without Martin Foody suspended and Conor Judge, Stevie Curley and Matthew Cullen all injured we had the bare 13 players but they were a credit to themselves, their families and their club throughout.
John McDonnell had one of his best games so far for the club winning a lot of ball at midfield and always available and running for laid off ball. He got our first score from a free and followed with another from play. Shane Wright scored a delightful point when throwing a few dummies and a one two with Jason Earlis to leave the scores all square. Kevin McDonnell scored a long range free and we missed a good chance from another when dropped by the opposition in the small square. We were 2 points down coming into the break but two excellent scores one from Eoin Flynn and the from Eoin Kent after a lung bursting run all the way from the full back line left us level at the break 0-6 a piece.
We made a bad start to the second half and fell three points behind. John McDonnell scored a close in free to narrow the gap but it was out to 3 points again with 15 to go. We then hit a purple patch and with the movement of Anthony Kilcullen to centre half back, Shane Wright to the full forward line and James Flynn to the wing, all three were involved as we got a goal with Shane showing his soccer skills to go around the keeper and roll the ball to the net. Jason Earlis put us in front after a good run by Eoin Kent. This was followed by another monster from the wing by Kevin McDonnell. Drumcliffe pulled it back again to level but we won the next three kickouts and were in the lead with another point. We then missed two frees but on the next kickout the referee blew the final whistle. With all the excitement, neither team, officials nor suporters were sure what the result was but when it was confirmed there was great joy on our side.
This was a great achievement for the lads and management especially considering the lads who were unable to play but each player stepped up to the mark showing great tenacity and never say die spirit. Brian Feeney kickouts were long all day. Ronan Barrett won lots of balls he should not have. Kieran Kilcullen and Keith Foody playing in positions they were not accustomed to kept plugging hard all day. When James Flynn came to the wing, he won the first two breaking balls with one leading to the winning point. Keith Earlis had the tough task of marking his county minor colleague Paul Logan but came out of it unscathed.
Thanks to the lads, their families and management for all their work throughout the year. Most of these lads now have the U20 championship to look forward to next weekend.

The teams had their last Friday evening of training and coaching at Corballa with Enniscrone as visitors for the night. We had 65 boys and girls playing their hearts out and displaying great skills and sportsmanship.
After the games the team photos were taken with refreshments being handed to all children. Thanks to all the children for their enthusism throughout the year and their parents for the
lifts to games and training.
Thanks to the different coaches who really did enjoy their tasks as much as the kids. Here's looking forward to next year.

U14 B Champ final: Castleconnor 0-1 v Tourlestrane 4-10

Our U14 team played in the B championship final inTubbercurry last Wednesday evening against Tourlestrane. This was only the fourth game for the lads this year and it showed particularly in
the first half where lads were not as sharp picking up the sliotar and getting away their shots quickly. Despite very good effort we turned around at half time losing by 2-7. However Cian Barrins, Brendan Foody, Paul Flynn and Lewis Beardshall did shine.
In the second half lads touch and eye came in more and they started to show their skills, with the Tuffys, James Boland beginning to show their skills. Kenneth Flynn, Odhran Quinn and Elliot Beardshall were starved of possession in the full forward line. Seán Carrabine showed why he was the main scorer last year with a number of scroching solo runs in the half, unlucky not to score a goal or two and having to settle for a point on another occassion. A better performance in the second half with also an outstanding full length diving save from captain for the evening Stephen Durkan, however it was not good enough against a very good Tourlestrane and we were defeated 4-10 v 0-1.

Enniscrone were visitors to Corballa on Friday evening. Thankfully there was good drying before the game and it didn't rain during it which helped both teams.
Enniscrone got off to a good start and were 2 points up early on but then we went on a scoring rampage with goals from Seán Carrabine, Kenneth Flynn and Luke Munnelly, to leave us leading by a good margin at the break.
3 goals in the first 3 minutes of the second half put the game beyond the visitors and we finished with a comfortable victory.

The team had their second successive win in the competition when winning easily in Ballisodare on Thursday evening. We were always in control but unfortunately Stevie Curley dislocated his shoulder, but not before scoring 1-5.
The team are now into the playoffs of the championship.
This game was played last Friday evening. The driving rain did quieten down during the game but handling for both teams was a lottery as the heavy evenings rain had made conditions very difficult for both teams.
The visitors broke through for a goal in the first minute and soon followed with a point. An excellent piece of individual play by Luke Munnelly ended with him driving to the net. This was followed shortly with another goal after Odhrán Quinn was first to respond to a ball off the post. Seán Carrabine added a point but at the half time whistle the visitors lead 2-2 3-5.
We got off to a great start to the second half with a great goal by Paul Flynn after a driving run in from the wing. This was quickly followed by a Luke Munnelly point. However the visitors took over then and extended their lead. In the last number of minutes we got through for a consolation goal.
Despite the loss it was a good performance from our very young team (with 4 u10s playing), and with a bit more team play the score could have been closer.

The team have a home game next Friday evening versus Enniscrone

Our U10 team travelled to Kent Park last Monday to partake in the final blitz of the year. Showing great skills and tenacity the team played 4 games on the evening.
The first game was against Coolera and the highlight for us was an excellent pointed free by Oisín Flynn from just inside his half.
We then took on Drumcliffe and this was up and down the field for the duration of the game with Owen Gillard and Brian Durkan getting their second goals of the week with Ronán Wilson hooking and blocking a joy to watch.
Next we took on the combined team of Calry and Easkey. Ruarí Gallagher calmness when under pressure in goal and Liam Donnegans play at full back were excellent.
Our last game was against the hosts Naomh Eoin and we showed tremendous heart with Daniel Ruane putting his body in the way of a hurl, Dáire Barrins taking great sideline cuts and Paul Ruane all over the place.
After the games we had drawn 3 and lost 1. In the dressing room we treated the youngsters to refreshments and thanked them for their efforts all year.
Thanks to the parents and players and management for all their efforts. It is hoped to be back in the next few weeks with indoor hurling.
Last weekend August 20/21 the Club hosted the inaugural novel Cow Dung Festival at the Community Centre and GAA Park. The unusual title and main theme of the weekend, namely the cow dung bingo captured the imagination of the people locally, and those who came from afar. Gerry Guthrie and his country band and Pats Country Road show opened the festival on Saturday night and a great crowd filled the main hall and dance floor for the night. It was a credit to all involved who had the main hall, and the newly made Bar looking splendid. The crowd danced the night away into the small hours and a great night was had by all.
There was no rest for the organising committee as the next morning wasn't long coming! First on the schedule for Sunday was the Castleconnor-Bonniconlon Honda Run. About 30 bikes departed from the community centre at 12.30pm. The sun began to shine and the families and kids enjoyed some fun and activities on the GAA pitch with plenty of events to keep them occupied. Pat Boyle provided music on the pitch and a good atmosphere was starting to build up. The Honda run returned at about 3.00pm and the hall was filling up rapidly to watch the Mayo v Kerry match on the big screens. There was a fantastic atmosphere in the place throughout the duration of the game and the packed house cheered on our neighbours for this contest.
After the match it was time to bring Betsy the cow onto the pitch. The crowd at the bar and in the hall flocked to the stand and pitch perimeters to see Betsy arrive onto the field. After about an hour and a half Betsy had done her bit!, and the laser measuring devices confirmed that Anthony Gallagher from Killala in Mayo had bought that lucky square, winning €2000.
Inside in the Community Centre Roisin Gordon was providing the entertainment, and after we held the Club Lotto Draw. €13,650 was the main prize, however there was no winning ticket and Jerome Clarke from Easkey matched 3 numbers winning €150. Tara Cawley and her band Retaken took to the stage shortly after and played in to the night. Another great night was had by all Sunday night as the weekend came to a close, with all the hard work evidently proving to be worthwhile. Other prizes for people who had squares close to the winning one were winners of €100. These were Kathleen Lynn, Geraldine Caden, Austin Tuffy, Peter Flynn, Paula Duggan, Wayne Ryan, John Hopkins and Nora McDonnell.€25 winners were David Fox, Sarah Gillard, Claire Byrne, Pascal Gillard, Patricia Greavey, Sharon Barrett, John Creegan and Eugene Sheridan.
The Club would like to thank all the people who supported the event, our community spirit showed as usual. The finance committee deserves great credit for their hard work and to all the volunteers who helped before, during and after the event with the clean up. There are far too many names to mention. Lets hope that this time next year, the Castleconnor GAA Club will be hosting another festival!
U-16 A Championship Shield Final: Castleconnor 0-23 v 1-06 Geevagh

The under 16 team had a comprehensive victory over Geevagh in the final of the A Championship shield on Monday night last at Markievicz Park.
James Flynn opened Castleconnor's account with a fine point and the team rushed into a 6 point lead with points from Stephen Curley and Sean Carrabine. Geevagh tried very hard and got off the mark with a well taken free on 13 minutes. Carrabine replied for us on 16 minutes after good work from Kevin McDonnell, Shane Wright and Stephen Curley.
Just before the interval Geevagh snatched a quick goal leavin it 1-1 to 0-14.
In the second period the men from the East werent lying down and popped over a few nice points, 1-5 to 0-16, but our lads responded well and were never in doubt as we finished winners 0-23 to 1-6, with Stephen Curley's tally a remarkable 17 points.
Arthur Beardshall kept the rearguard on their feet at all times, the full back line namely Keith Fooda, Conor Judge and Liam Naughton were very solid and kept their opponents chances to a minimum throughout. Conor Gallagher, Jason Earlis and Eoin Kent in the half back line were sweeping up the kckouts, helping the midfielders and delivering the ball directly inside. Ciaran Kilcullen and Kevin McDonnell kept on top of things in the middle of the park while James Flynn, Shane Wright and Cian Barrins in the half forward line ran at Geevaghs defence. Lewis Beardshall, Stephen Curley and Sean Carrabine in the full forward line worked very well together with the eldest of the trio leading by example.
Afterwards the team captain Kevin McDonnell was presented with the cup by Peter McHugh, Chairman Coiste na nOg Shligigh and the team went to Muddy Burns after for refreshments.
Well Done to the team and management of Michael McDonnell, Paul Kilcullen and Darren Ruane.
The members of the team are still involved in Minor Championship and hopefully this will make them even hungrier for more silverwear.
U-16 A Championship Shield Final:

29/08/11, Markevicz Park
Castleconnor travelled to Tubbercurry on Saturday evening with a game to retain their intermediate status. For the first time in weeks our young team played as expected.
We got off to a good start with points from play from Kevin Langan and John McDonnell. Another point from corner back Tom Cawley was soon followed by a great goal from Kevin McDonnell who rounded the keeper after a defence splitting pass from Brian Curley. Brian Howley and Kevin Langan got a point each before th break to lead 1-6 v 0-5 at the break.
A blistering start to the second half saw us scoring 1-4 and playing some of the best football seen by the club in a long time, with the goal from Kevin Langan coming after three brillant passes. Kevin McDonnell scored a good point from play followed by one from his brother John. Kevin Lanan kept the scoreboard ticking till the end and we had secured our Intermediate status with a final score of 2-14 v 1-7.
This finishes this teams campaign for the year.Thanks to the management of Hugh Lynn, PJ Barrins and Jason Cawley and to the panel for their efforts throughout the year.

Handball: Jason goes out in tie break at AI semi-final

Jason Earlis travelled to Limerick on Saturday to play with Stanley Harte in the All Ireland Juvenile A U15 Handball semi-final.
This was a rip roaring match from start to finish and unfortunately for our Jason Sligo lost by a single ace in the tie break set.
Although devasted at the end the club feel this is the start for Jason and everyone in Castleconnor want to congratulate him on this achievement. Jason is a great club man and is always in the centre on Friday evenings coaching the younger members of the club.
U12 Hurling B2 final: Castleconnor 13-4 v Calry 1-0

Played on Monday evening with prefect conditions for hurling our youngsters brought home another trophy when they defeated Calry.
From the start we were on top, but it took five minutes to get our first score with a point from Jason Tuffy. Tuffy was to have a huge impact in the first half scoring 4 goals. Paul Flynn and Odhrán Quinn were totally in control at midfield feeding Tuffy with good ball and taking some scores. Oisín Flynn also scored two goals before the break.
With us in a dominant position we replaced our older lads and gave players like Paul and Daniel Ruane their first games at this grade. We also had goal scorers from James Boland, Dáire Barrins, Brian Durkan, Ronan Wilson and Owen Gillard. Colm Naughton was excellent throughout the game with Fergal Boland making a big impact when coming on.
After the game the team were treated to a visit to the local KFC

In the semi-final of the shield we had Mullinabreena as visitors.
We got off to a good start and took the lead but the visitors then went 2 points up after scoring a goal.
After the break the team moved up the gears and took control of the game. By the full time whistle we had moved well ahead and had secured our place in the Shield final next Monday with our opponents being Geevagh
Minor Championship: Castleconnor 2-14 v 0-10 Enniscrone/Kilglass

The minor team had an emphatic win over neighbours Enniscrone last evening.
The team were slow to start and trailed 4-0 after 15 minutes, despite missing 6 scorable opportunities. They rallied well and trailed 0-7 to 0-6 at the interval.

U-16 AS Q-Final: Castleconnor 4-14 v 2-03 Easkey/St. Farnan's

The under 16 team got back to winning ways on Monday evening last with a comprehensive victory of neighbours Easkey/Farnans at Easkey.
2-3 to 0-0 up after a few minutes, the home side rallied back and were within a point of us at the interval, 2-4 to 2-3.
The team improved immensely in the second period and ran out easy winners in the end.
On Monday evening they take on Coolaney/Mullinabreena in the semi final at Corballa at 7PM
U-16 AC Q-Final: Castleconnor 2-08 v 2-14 St. John's

The under 16 team were defeated by St Johns in the quarter final of the A Championship.
Despite been 4 points up at the break, Johns got off to a flyer in the second half and our lads failed to recover.
They play Easkey/Farnans now in the A Shield Q/Final

U16: The under 16 team played St. Pats in the A Championship on Monday
week last. This was a comprehensive victory with the team firing on all
cylinders winning easily. They are now through to the championship
quarter final v St.Johns on August 8 away.
U12 Hurling: The team are due to play Calry in the Final of their section
in two weeks time. Details later.
U10 Hurling: Next Monday, August 8th the club will be hosting an all
county u10 blitz. Please come out to support.
U6/8/10: Training continues every Friday evening at 7pm.
U-14 Final: The final of the B championship took place on Thursday
evening with neighbours St. Farnan's in Markievicz Park. In a high
scoring and skillful encounter we came out the wrong side of the
scoreline of 3-16 v 2-10.
Unfortunately for the lads this game was
lost in the first 15 minutes, when we failed to punish our opponents
when dominating possesion. At the half time break we lead 2-6 v 0-6,
with the goals coming from Jack O'Hora and Luke Munnelly.
Farnans started the second half strongly and got two quick goals. Despite the
best efforts our lads we failed to regain the lead once lost. However
they were a credit to the club and thanks to them and their management
of Frank Barrett and Brian Howley for their efforts during the year
and Niall Judge before going to the states.

Unfortunately the teams dismal run continued. We were reduced to 14
men in the first 2 minutes the team were also under pressure having to
make 5 enforced changes from the last round.
We were down 6 nil after 20 minutes but Biran Howley scored a point from play and a minute
after Kevin McDonnell, making his first team debut smashed a goal to
the roof of the net, to get us back into the game. Just before the
break the referee missed a push on John Tuffy which led to a goal and
the half time score 1-6 v 1-1. In the second half the lads worked
extremely hard and despite missing two close in frees only lost 2-8 v
1-2.

The Junior team defeated Eastern Harps by the narrowest of margins on Sunday last in the second leg of the championship, however we needed to win by 8 or more to progress to the next stage.
Eastern Harps started the better scoring two points, and we replied with 1-1 after 15 minutes. The team lost Bart Barrins to a serious leg injury after. Both sides failed to convert possesion into scores on many occasions in the second period, and the team held out to win 1-8 to 0-10.
Thanks to Pat Flynn and Gerry Holmes for managing the side for the year, its great for such a small club to operate a second team at senior grade.
The under 14 team had a comprehensive victory over Coolaney/Mullinabreena in the semi final of the B championship on Friday last, to set up a final encounter with neighbours St. Farnan's.
The team were always ahead throughout and their first half performance really meant the game was over as a contest however our opponents rallied very well in the second half leaving the final score 8-14 to 4-9.

The lads were in Kilcoyne Park on Wednesday evening where the weather was good for hurling. When we played Tubber in the third round we were well beaten but this time things were a lot closer. This is a game where our lads did everything right up to putting the scores on the board. They dominated throughout the pitch and played some of the best hurling they have ever played with a plenty of successful pulling of high balls and doubling on shots.
In the first half we were in complete control but we hit wide after wide and the home keeper made a number of good stops and clearances. Towards the end of the half Tubber broke up field and with a long range effort they scored a goal just under the crossbar. The half time score had the home team leading 1-0 v 0-0.
We were a bit subdued at the start of the second but finally we put a score on the board with a point from play from Odhrán Quinn after receiving a pass from Paul Flynn. Our younger players were getting more confidence and it was great to see Oisín Flynn and Colm Naughton striking the ball expertly. The Tubber strength was their hooking and blocking in particular and they got a point from a free, to increase their lead. They followed this up with a goal from a free and another goal from play. Despite this we still dominated play but were not calm in front of goals.
With 4 minutes to go Kenneth Flynn drove an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net after a good clearance from jason Tuffy who had one of his best games for the team. Shortly after the home keeper made a great save and from the resulting clearance Odhrán Quinn got his second point from play. Hard as we tried in the last few minutes we did not breach the goal again. However all the lads can be very happy with everything they did bar the result. The doubling on balls by James Boland, Colm Naughton and Kenneth Flynn was a feature of the game with the high fielding of Quinn and Paul Flynn at midfield another.
The team are out in two weeks time when we have a home fixture to Calry.

The team travelled to Keash on Sunday evening for this first leg game against Eastern Harps. In the horrendous conditions the team who had lost a number of players the night before in the intermediate championship put up a good effort.
We were against the wind and rain in the first half and got off to a good start with a point from Patrick Cleary. A number of minutes later Bart Barrins drove a 45 over the bar against the wind and followed this up later with a point from play after being assisted by Diarmuid Howley. Just before the break the visitors got through for a decisive goal to lead 1-8 v 0-3 at the break.
We failed to reduce this lead in the second half and missed two good goal scoring chances late on with only points from frees from Eoin Flynn to show for our efforts. The final score was 1-10 v 0-5. However with the home leg next week and Harps no doubt going to lose some players to Intermediate the team are still in with a chance on Sunday.

This local derby attracted a good crowd to Quigabar on Saturday evening despite the horrendous weather. We lost Paul Sweeney and Brian Howley before the start due to illness and injury and things went downhill after that.
We had the elements in the first half and lead by 2 points both scores coming from Kevin Langan. In the 20th minute a dipping shot from Pats deceived our keeper and ended up in the net. Two minutes later Anthony Kilcullen atoned for that by saving a well struck penalty. We hit a number of wides before the end of the half and trailed 0-2 v 1-0 at the break.
The second half we fell away and only scored one point again from Kevin Langan. This was a game where a lot of lads did not do themselves justice, with John Tuffy, Alan Naughton, Michael Langan and Brian Curley keeping going till the end.

In the replay of the league quarter final we had Tourlestrane as visitors to Corballa on Thursday evening.
It took the team too long to get motoring in this game and at half time we trailed 1-8 v 0-2.
In the second half we put in a better performance and came back into the game but late goals from the visitors saw us off on a scoreline of 3-9 v 0-8.

The under 14 team stormed into the semi final of the B Football Championship following an 8-10 to 4-11 victory over a highly fancied Owenmore gaels side on Monday evening last.
A good battle was seen throughout with Castleconnor's goals being decisive. The team will be hoping to tighten up their rearguard for their next outing.
The semi Final is at home at 7.00pm on July 22nd. The opposition will be either Coolaney/Mullinabreena or Owenmore Gaels again.

The under 16 team were defeated by a superior St. Marys outfit in their opening Championship encounter on Monday evening last at Kent Park.
Marys got off to a flying start with a goal immediately, and our lads heads dropped and we failed to recover.
Next Monday evening we take on St. Pats at St. Brendan's GAA Park. Throw In 7.00PM.

Playing with the elements in the opening period, the team got off to a slow start and a massive save by keeper Anthony Kilcullen after two minutes denied Farnans a goal. However just over a minute later our opponents opened up our rearguard yet again and blasted to the net.
A good Castleconnor reponse would be imperative, and this is what was given as the team kicked five points without reply, coming from Brian Lynn, John O'Regan, and three points from Kevin Langan.
On 16 minutes, St. Farnans went on the rampage again, the resultant being another goal thus putting our progress back a step. We were falling into trouble down the centre undoubtedly. John O'Regan responded almost immediately with a point after good work from Kevin Langan and Paul Sweeney. The sides traded scores again leavin it all square at the break, 2-2 to 0-8.
Just like the first half, we started slow on the restart and a lack of concentration at very important times cost the team two points with two frees in the first and second minutes respectively. Farnans went 3 points ahead on 38 minutes, and Paul Sweeney responded six minutes later after good work from Brian Curley. 47 minuteswas gone on the clock and the scoreboard read 2-7 to 0-10 in favour of the blue and whites and suddenly a very good individual goal from Brian Curley left the game hanging in balance. ( 2-7 to 1-10)
The failure of the team to register another score in the last 13 minutes of the contest proved to be fatal as Farnans scored five points on the trot to leave the score at 2-12 to 1-10. Castleconnor will be disappointed in one way as the game was there for the taking, but at the same time will be happy with the determination and hard work shown throughout.
Training continues on Tuesday and Thursday this week. Round 3 versus St. Pats takes place next
Saturday evening, again in Enniscrone. Its the second game of a double header, Throw In is at 7.30PM. Please support.

The lads had a home game in this round when Tourlestrane were visitors on Wednesday. There was a strong wind towards the Ballina end which the visitors had in the first half.
We started well but were 3 points down when Tourlestrane were awarded a close in free which was smached to the net, They also scored a soft goal just before the break to leave them leading 2-4 v 0-0.
Things did not improve at the start of the second half when the visitors scored 1-1 in the first few minutes. At last our lads started to play and the defensive bravery of Colm Naughton was easily seen. Paul Flynn went on a scoring spree and got his first goal after a pass from Kenneth Flynn, he then scored a long range goal after a pass from James Boland. He then proceeded to score a 65 after a good save by the opposition keeper. Odhran Quinn put him through for his final score.
The team were now playing as a team but they left their final comeback too late and ended up losing 3-1 v 4-4.

A goal and 3 points on the trot in the last five and a half minutes of this Minor league quarter final played at Tourlestrane this evening ensured Castleconnor will get another chance to book a semi final spot.
In very slippery conditions the team got off to a poor start and two soft goals for Tourlestrane in the opening half left the team on the backfoot, as we trailed 2-4 to 0-2 at the break.
32 seconds after the restart Ciaran Kilcullen rattled the Tourlestrane net and Castleconnor began to play in patches. Our opponents dominated proceedings for the next while and we trailed 2-8 to 1-5 with five and a half minutes remaining.
Substitute Keith Foody smashed to the net after three minutes on the field of play and this revived Castleconnor's comeback. Three points in the final three minutes from Eoin Flynn, Kevin McDonnell, and Stephen Curley left it at 2-8 a piece. A last minute free from Tourlestrane broke down in the danger area and after a clearance from our reargard, referee Michael Duffy brought a halt to proceedings.
Details of the replay are to be confirmed. The team will be hoping to improve on their overall performance for the replay.

We had our final game of the league when we went to local rivals Easkey in a match where the winner would be promoted to division 1.
A constant rain shower during the first half made ball handling very difficult for both teams. Easkey got through for a goal in the 20th minute and should have had a second just before half time except for an excellent save by keeper Bart Barrins.
At half time we trailed 1-4 v 0-5 with our scores coming from Paul Kilcullen, John O'Regan and Kevin Langan. However Easkey upped it in the second half and we lost 2-12 v 0-5.

The Under 14 team get their Championship campaign underway last Tuesday evening when they travelled to Carraroe to take on St.Johns.
Despite being close at the break we pulled away in the second half to record a 3-11 v 2-6 win.
The team have another away fixture in the next round when they travel to Colloney to take on Owenmore Gaels

:On Friday evening the team had Easkey as visitors for a game played in perfect conditions. We got off to a good start with points from Paul Sweeney, Patrick Cleary, Shane Feeney and Stevie Kilgannon. We missed a number of goal chances but Paul Sweeney eventually found the net to leave us leading 1-5 v 0-2 at ht.
The second half was tight for the first twenty minutes as Easkey came back into the game and went in front. However when Ronan Keane was brought down and Paul Sweeney converted it, we drew level but two mistakes in defence meant that we lost two major scores to settle the game 4-9 v 2-5

Played on Sunday morning in Geevagh, it was a 13-a-side fixture. Both teams were tentative at the beginning with us eventually taking the lead with a Ronan Keane point. It was 3 points all after 20 minutes with John McDonnell and Paul Sweeney scoring. The killer blow was struck by the home team scoring three goals just before the half time break which came after a good team move from our selves finished shaving the post for goal. The half time score was 3-5 v 0-3.
Geevagh extended the lead after the break with a quick point and then another goal. This seemed to wake us us and Paul Sweeney scored an excellent goal and this was followed by 1-1 from John McDonnell who shot into the roof of the net. Paul Sweeney scored another point but that was as good as it got and a game of missed chances meant we lost 4-9 v 2-5.

Our lads went to Tourlestrane on Wednesday for their first game in a month and it showed in the first half. The conditions were perfect for hurling. The stronger home team were off the mark early in the half and and by half time they had moved into a commanding lead of 4-6 to nil.
The second half the lads showed a lot of good effort and more efficency in their effort and touches. Stephen Durkan who went into goal was booming the puck outs way down the field and this eventually paid off with a point from Seán Carrabine. This was followed shortly afterwards by a goal from Cian Barrins after a good solo run. Two other scores from Lewis Beardshall and Stephen Tuffy meant that we finished on a more optimistic note.
Thanks to the home club for having ice available which helped greatly in the treatment of a hand injury.

Markievicz park was the setting for the final on Monday evening. When the teams clashed earlier in the league at Corballa we were very lucky to win. David and Michael had a full panel to call on for nearly the first time this year in a resplendant Markievicz.
The first quarter was a ding dong affair and was scoreless for most of the time, but then Odhrán Quinn and Paul Flynn got two quick scores leaving us to lead 2 v 0 at the end of th first quarter. We got off to a better start in the 2nd quarter with some great foot passing from defence and midfield into our forwards and it was no surprise when we turned over at half time leading 0-4 v 0-1.
The thrid quarter was like the second and we got three good scores from Odhrán Quinn, Paul Flynn and Mícheal Cahill. Thomas Howley, James Boland Niall Judge and Kenneth Flynn were marshalling the Geevagh forwards and at the end of this quarter we lead 7 v 3.
Geevagh came back at the start of the thrid quarter as our lads started to defend the lead and heading into the final minutes it was 7 v 5 but a long range free from captain Odhrán Quinn helped ease the pressure, though Geevagh had a few disappointing efforts from frees in this time. The final whistle blew and we had retained the trophy that was won in 2010.
Captain Odhrán received the cup from Martin Seery and made a fine speech. Well done to the whole squad who all played their part on the evening. A special word of thanks to David Mahoney and Michael Cahill who did so much work al year with this squad which was very evident on the evening with their fine kick passing and tackling. Thanks to all the parents and supporters who gave lifts and vocal encouragement throughout the year

The lads got back on the winning trail after three successive defeats in league and championship. A strong crossfield breeze had no effect on the game. Things looked decidedly poor for us when we trailed by 0-6 v 0-0 after 13 minutes. Kevin Langan got us off the mark and from the resulting kickout Alan Naughton caught the kickout and drove forward to score an excellent point with the outside of his right foot from an awkward angle.
This was followed up with another long range point from Brian "Crouch" Howley who was starting to cause havoc around the square. Darragh Gilmartin made the long run up from corner back to score a good point and Kevin Langan and Paul Kilcullen points left us behind 0-8 v 0-7 at the break.
We got off to a great start in the second half with two great points from Paul Kilcullen and John McDonnell each and then a monster left-footed effort from Brian Howley. The defence kept the visitors attack at bay with Ronán Keane and David Fox storming out of defence. In the last few minutes John McDonnell was fouled when shooting for goal and Kevin Langan hitting the resultant penalty to the roof of the net.
It was some turnaround for the team during the hour and the result puts the team in third place going into the final game of the league where they still can be promoted but that is a monstrous task as they travel to Easkey where they must defeat Easkey to knock them out of promotion.

Aoibhe Barrins and Seán Carrabine who had gone through four qualifying rounds throughout the county, reached the final where each had 3 opponents for the title of county place kicking champions.
The boys competition took place first and after the first round Seán was sharing first with two other boys. In the second round Seán missed two but so did one of the other lads, however the boy from Castlerock hit only 1 miss and was the winner. Seán had to take 7 separate frees from all angles before defeating the lad from Sooey to come second in the competition.
In the girls competition Aoibhe made short work of the competition when becoming the only child boy or girl to score all 6 of her first frees to be declared the girls county free taking champion for 2011.
Well done to both Seán and Aoibhe who were presented with their awards by Mark Brehony

The girls from Corballa went down with the final bounced ball in this excellent final. When the girls look back they will realise that their failure to score in the first half and too many wides cost them the title.
In the first half we were very sluggish and second to the ball however the brillant tackling by our backs Catherine Rogan, Celine Gallagher, Aoife Meenaghan, Josina Linka and keeper Marie Cahill kept the team in it. When the half time whistle blew we trailed 3 v 1.
From the throw in Aoibhe Barrins caught it and drove through the defence to score the first point for Corballa. From the resulting kickout Amy Cawley-Fox got another score. Moylough went up the field and scored a point. Lauren Cawley punched a point after very strong running by Aoife Durkan who carried a lot of ball in either half. Again Moylough opened up the score advantage but good work by Amy Ruane saw Sarah Flynn fouled and Aoibhe Barrins scored from the free. With 2 minutes to go Amy Cawley Fox put over the equaliser.
In the last minute the both sides tried their hardest to get a winner and just when it looked like the game would be heading for a replay, a long range effort from midfield by Moylough bounced up and rolled over the crossbar for the winning score. The team sunk to their knees as the final whistle blew, but they tried their best and on the day it just was not enough. Thanks to Mr.Keane and Mr.Fogarthy for their efforts in getting the team to the final.

Div 4 Rd 8:Castleconnor 1-6 v Shamrock Gaels 1-16

The junior team had their first game in a number of weeks when Shamrock Gaels were visitors to Corballa on Friday evening. Good conditions prevailed throughout the game.
The visitors got off to a quick start and were 3-0 up after a few minutes but we got back into it with both of our midfielders scoring long range points. As the half progressed we got more confident and a number of points kept us in contention with John McDonnell very unlucky that a lob just finished over the bar. But in the last attack of the half he scored a screamer of a goal after a very good team movement to leave us leading 1-5 v 0-6.
The visitors got the perfect start to the second half with a very good individual goal. They followed it up with good points from around the park. The visitors goalkeeper was probably the man of the match though and made three excellent saves during the second half, all at times that would have meant this game would have gone down to the final minutes. All we had to show for the half though was an excellently worked 45 that Stephen Kilgallon scored. The lads worked to the end and the visitors keeper made a final excellent save from player/manager Pat Flynn.

Our lads went out to Tubbercurryon Wednesday evening. A perfect evening for hurling for the first time this year, however a number of our smaller lads received a few hand injuries with us down to 10 players. Paul Flynn hit a monster free over the bar midway through the half and scored a goal later in the half but we trailed 2-0 v 1-1.
In the second half the stronger home team took over but some strong defending by Ruairí Gallagher and Ronán Wilson kept us in touch but we failed to score despite a number of good efforts.

Castleconnor hosted the Sligo Juvenile 1-wall championships on Saturday. It turned out to be a great day for our youngsters.
In the Girls U13 final, Catriona Swift defeated clubmate Rachel Foody. Aoife Quinn followed this up in the Girls U14 singles final when she proved too strong for her club mate Marianna Foody.
The Girls plate final was again a Castleconnor club affair with Mary Foody defeating Leah Swift.
In the boys section there was despair for Jason Earlis as Collooney’s Stanley Harte was the star in the Boys U-15 grade. Harte with his strong left hand used it effectively and Harte ran out the winner in the end by 15-9.
Seán Carrbine lost out in the U13 Plate final to Conor Booth of Ballymote whilst in the U15 plate final Barry McLoughlin defeated his clubmate Shane Wright.
Thanks to the organising committee and all those who helped in the smooth running of the event.

It has been a very busy two weeks for this squad of players with them having 4 games in 12 days. However it was worth it on Friday evening when the team played Coolaney/Mullinabreena in Cloonacool in the division 2 shield final.
Ths was a tight game throughout with never more than a score between the teams. At half time we lead and despite the best efforts of our opposition we were the deserving winners on a score line of 1-9 v 2-10 with the primary score getters, Luke Munnelly and Seán Carrabine.

Castleconnor played Coolaney Mullinabreena in the first round of this years Intermediate championship on Saturday evening in Tourlestrane. The conditions were almost perfect except for the midges who had a great evening as did our opposition. We were totally outplayed in the front third of the field with midfield proabably winning their battle.
The team lost the influential Michael Langan in the first minute through injury. Alan cawley equalised with a great point after seven minutes from the left. Coolaney then got through for 2 quick goals from long balls in over the defences heads. After 20 mins, the score was 3-3 v 0-2 with Kevin Langan our other point scorer. At half time it was 3-6 v 0-2
The game was long over before the final whistle, however we started with a bit more bite but two goal chances went a begging and we were defeated heavily 5-14 v 0-6.

U10 Community Games: Castleconnor 3-1 v Cornageeha 4-3

Our community games team travelled to Carraroe on Thursday evening for this quarter-final fixture. A large downpour delayed the start of the game but eventually it cleared up and the game started. From the off we showed great heart and especially teamwork. Matthew Blakeney scored a goal early on but oursustained pressure was not reflected on the scoreboard plus we struck the crossbar and post during this period. Our hosts scored two goals and a point late in the half to lead 2-1 v 1-0 at the break
In the second half we got off to a good start with 1-1 from Dáire Barrins early in the half to draw us level. However like the first half we could not put the ball between the sticks and again we struck the crossbar. Cornageeha broke out and scored 1-2 to put us back on the back foot. Oisín Flynn then struck a low shot to the net and the hosts defence denied Orla Naughton on two occassions and Colm Naughton also. A breakaway goal again left us scrambling but despite the efforts of Patrick Cooney, Owen Gillard, Rian Winters, Daniel Ruane, Eilidh McPhee, Marie Flynn and young Thomas Langan failed and the final whistle blew with us again on the attack.
Despite losing this was a great performance by all involved and their never say die spirit and teamwork and togetherness was shown throughout. After the game drinks sponsored by Tuffys Corballa were welcomed by all the team.

JBFC Leg 2: Castleconnor 1-08 v 0-10 Eastern Harps

The Junior team defeated Eastern Harps by the narrowest of margins on Sunday last in the second leg of the championship, however we needed to win by 8 or more to progress to the next stage.
Eastern Harps started the better scoring two points, and we replied with 1-1 after 15 minutes. The team lost Bart Barrins to a serious leg injury after. Both sides failed to convert possesion into scores on many occasions in the second period, and the team held out to win 1-8 to 0-10.
Thanks to Pat Flynn and Gerry Holmes for managing the side for the year, its great for such a small club to operate a second team at senior grade

This match was played at Corballa on Monday evening. As both sides had the numbers it was agreed to play a 13-a-side game. In the first half we played towards the church end and despite a slow start we came back into the game well and at the half time break we trailed 2-5(7) v 2-6(8).
A woeful first quarter in the second half was where all the damage was done. Drumcliffe took over at midfield and picked off scores from all angles. It took us 17 minutes to register our first score of the second half but the score was out of reach at this time. But the lads soldiered on till the end and for the last 10 minutes matched the visitors.
The team are now preparing for the Shield final on Friday.

This match took place on Friday evening at Corballa. The early exchanges were close and tough however our lads began to dominate as the half wore on and were leading at the break.
In the second half they still held sway and once the opposition had a player red-carded there was no way back for the visitors.
Our lads move on to the final versus Coolaney/Mullinabreena next Friday evening at 7.

We travelled to Templeboy on Sunday. It turned out to b a crazy day weather wise with wind and constant rain and driving rain in the second half with the pitch close to unplayable during the seond half and many players on both sides looking like "Bambi on ice" regularly.
We played against the wind in the first and with 5 minutes of the half to go we only trailed 0-4 v 0-2 mostly due to the wayward shooting of the home team. In the last few minutes of the half they got their shooting boots on and finished strongly to lead 0-7 v 0-2 at the half time whistle.
After the break the weather deteriorated so badly that most of the supporters went into the dressingrooms. We got the first score of the half with a point but the home side tackled and harried for their lives and they got a number of vital scores from frees during the half. Eventually we got a major score as an excellent team move was finished to the net left footed by David Carrabine, however it was too little too late.

Corballa NS girls through to county schools final

The girls from Corballa made it through to the 4 teacher final in Markievicz on June 18th after they defeated couny 7-a-side champions Cliffoney at Skreen.
The first half they took control early on and scores from Amy Cawley-Fox and Aoife Durkan put the girls in control. At half time they lead 5 v 2 whch should have been larger.
in the second half they continued to dominate and stretched the lead to 4 scores and then 5 but Cliffoney came back to 2 however the girls moved the lead to 9-4 and finished with a well deservered victory.

On Friday afternoon in Quigabar, the Corballa boys played 4 games in the schools championship.
After easy victories over Enniscrone and Quigabar they faced Dromore West in a do or die for both teams, with the losers out of the competition. At half time we lead by 1 after playing with the breeze but an excellent second half saw the lads come through strongly to win by 5.
Dromore West were now out and so the final game of the day between Corballa and Highpark became the winner takes all game. We played with the wind in the first half and lead by 2 at the break. However midfielder Paul Flynn had to pull out at this point and in the second half the stronger Highpark boys took over to win handsomely.
However it was a great effort from the Corballa boys who can look back with pride on their days efforts

The team travelled to Tourlestrane on Wednesday evening. Despite 5 of the lads playing games on Monday and Tuesday they made a great effort to be there and put in a good show.
The home team took an early lead in the game but a super long range free from Paul Flynn, put us on the attack and Kenneth Flynn finished off the move with a score. Yet again the visitors took the lead but when after 10 minutes we moved back to regular hurling (not just ground hurling), our strong midfield started to dominate with Odhran Quinn getting two scores and Kenneth Flynn adding in another, to lead at the break 4 v 2
In the second half our young defence of Fergal Boland, Ruairí Gallagher, Colm Naughton and Dáire Barrins kept out the opposition and with James Boland using his full back experience well we weathered the storm. For the last 15 minutes we kept possession but missed a number of scores with some good saves being made by the home keeper. Eventually Jason Tuffy, captain for the evening broke the deadlock with a fine groundstroke. He followed this up with another stroke following good work by Oisín Flynn, Paul Flynn and Odhrán Quinn.
It was a good show from our lads and it was a good even game throughout with the lads on both teams growing in confidence and stature with every touch of the sliotar. The team have a break next week and then will have Tubbercurry as their next opponents

The girls team from Corballa had a very successful week last week when qualifying for the county schools semi-final.
The team qualified from the west after comprehensive victories over Enniscrone, Rathlee and Dromore West and draw with Highpark. The team went through on scoring difference over Highpark.

The team suffered their third loss of the year when at windswept Corballa on Sunday the visitors St.Pats finished strongly to emerge victorious. Playing against the wind in the first half we were down 1-1 after 2 minutes but strong play from Kevin Langan brought us back into it. However the team ran out of luck when missing a number of good goal scoring chances throughout the half. At the half time whistle Frank Barrett scored the equaliser after another lucky escape at the Pats goal.
The half time score was 0-8 v 1-5.
Just like the first half, we managed to give the visitors a head start of 4 points when conceding 1-1 in the first 2 minutes of the half. But like the first half we played our way back into the game and took the lead following points from Paul Kilcullen and David Carrabine. Just after this we missed two excellent goal chances with neither forcing the keeper to make a save. The superior fitness of the visitors told as they scored a number of points in the last few minutes to win by 2, 2-11 v 0-15.

The panel consisting mainly of boys travelled to Buninnadden on Friday evening. Despite the rain and wind the team of 16 put in a great performance throughout.
On Saturday our girls took part in a blitz in St.Farnans. The team played 3 games and emerged victorious in all. They also received a coaching session from former All-Star Katriona Connolly and her team which was of great benefit to all the girls. Well done to all the panel. We played against Curry, St.Nathys and St.Farnans. Thanks to St.Farnans for the invite to this well organised event.

Owenmore Gaels were visitors to St. Brendan's GAA Park on Thursday evening in round 3 of the 11 a side tournament and came out winners on a 2-10 to 3-02 scoreline.
The under 16 team were defeated in the league shield final by a stronger Tubbercurry outfit at Kent Park on Monday evening last.
The team got off to a bright start and had the majority of the possesion, however this didnt reflect on the scoreboard. Wayward shooting proved very costly, in contrast to the opposition who registered scores when they had the chances.
The team trailed 0-7 to 0-4 at the interval and could easily have been ahead. Tubbercurry took over in the second half and our lads failed to come out of the blocks.
The team will have a break now until after the exams and will have a few more players back into the team for the championship campaign.

The Williamstown 2011, one wall championships took place last weekend and Castleconnor was represented by the Quinn family at the proceedings. Ódhran Quinn was unlucky in the first round of the U12 boys, losing by a single score but then proceeded to make it all the way to the Plate final.
Aoife had an easy win in the first round U14 girls but unfortuanately went out in the second round. Aoife who recently won an All-Ireland title as part of the Connacht interprovincial team and a Connacht schools title with Marianne Foody, acquitted herself well.

The team played the sixth round of the league on Saturday evening when St.Marys were visitors to Corballa.
A strong breeze blew into the village goal which the visitors had and used well and lead 4-0 before John McDonnell got our first two scores. We then missed a number of goal chances and at the half time we trailed 0-7 v 0-3 with Frank Barrett getting the last point.
The visitors got the first score of the half before Brian Howley scored two monster points and another by John McDonnell narrowed the lead to two but despite the efforts of the team and a final point from Stephen Kilgallon we lost 0-10 v 0-7.

Lotto:
The lotto jackpot remains elusive with the draw on Saturday
night in Muddy Burns yet again producing no winner. The numbers drawn
were 4, 10, 12, 21. The jackpot was €12900 and there was only one 3
number winner, Tatiane Baquiega. The jackpot now rises to €13000 and
the next draw will take place on the weekend of May 29th in Mahoneys
bar.
Festival:
The club are launching a major fundraising initiative with their Cow
Dung festival which will culminate on the weekend of August 20-21st
with a day of attractions and music plus a cow. Tickets for the square
of the field are €5 or 5 for €20.

There a number of outstanding membership fees still not
paid so it would be great to get these updated. Talk to any member of

The Minor team were defeated in round two of the 11 a side tournament in Easkey this evening. Winning by a few points at half time, our understrength side struggled against the elements in the second period and the Easkey/Farnans amalgamation finished stronger in the end.
Next Thursday the team host Owenmore Gaels at St. Brendan's GAA Park. 7PM
Our U12 hurlers had their first game of the year at home on Wednesday evening. With a very young panel it was always going to be hard but it was extremely hard when the opposition was so strong. We played with the strong wind in the first half and had 3 chances early on to score but shot wide or short. The visitors then got the first of their many scores. At half time the lead was 6-4 and it only got worse in the second when they had the elements.
However all our players got a half and they never stopped trying throughtout. It will definitely strengthen our team for future games.

The Under 16 team travelled to Seamie Donegan Memorial Park in Dromard on Monday evening last to take on St. Pats in the semi final of the division 1 shield, as part of a double header with the Division2 final.
A wet and very windy evening made conditions very difficult for both teams. We got off to a great start playing against the elements with points from Stephen Curley, Eoin Kent, James Flynn and Shane Wright, with Jason Earlis being very influential on each move. The team worked hard throughout the opening period, our rearguard being superb, with a notable perfomance from Conor Judge. The team led by 3 points at the interval, 0-7 to 0-4.
The team pulled away from our West division counterparts in the second period with goals from Cian Barrins, Lewis Beardshall and Wright. Final Score 3-18 to 1-04.

The two sides met at Sligo IT grounds on Saturday evening for the first time since Gaels dumped us out of the championship last year. A very strong gale force wind blew into the Calry end and the home team opted to play against it.
In the first minute Ronan Keane put us ahead with a point which followed directly with a goal from a penalty by Kevin Langan. From this bad start the home team scored the next 3 points and had us in disarray. Frank Barrett scored a lobbed goal and 3 quickfire points in the last few minutes of the half left us with the lead of 2-4 v 0-3.
In the first minutes of the second half we gifted a goal to the opposition from a 60m free to reduce the lead to 4 points with 27 minutes to play. However we totally took over from then on we the forwards winning a lot of ball in the tackle and creating good scoring chances for themselves. The best of the goals was a good team movement that ended with an Alan Cawley goal. In the end we won very easily with Kevin Langan acconting for 4-6 and Tom Cawley getting the other score

The team travelled to Templeboy on Friday evening more in hope than expectation. Having put in a good performance in the first half things went against the lads in the second half and in the end the superior side ran out easy winners.
In this new tournament Tourlestrane were visitors to Corballa on Thursday evening. In a good team performance the team showed plenty of nice touches and were well worth their victory in the end.

Tourlestrane arrived at Corballa on Tuesday evening for our first match of the year. A lot of our players were playing their first competitive hurling match ever. The visitors had only 8 players which we agree to as the team were anxious to have a game.
We played against a strong wind in the first half. Our inexperience showed regularly in the half and the rustiness of the players was evident when losing the sliotar in the tackle and getting hooked. We trailed coming up to the break 1-7 v 0-1 when we were awarded a penalty. Despite driving the penaalty well the shot from Seán Carrabine went just over the crossbar. From the resulting puckout the visitors scored their second goal despite some brave defending from Brendan Foody. We trailed at half time 2-10 v 0-2.
We got off to a good start in the second half with 2 long range points from Seán Carrabine and our forwards were unlicky with a few goal attempts. However the ability of one or two of the opposition to strike the sliotar long was a bridge we could not overcome and despite Seán scoring our goal from play the visitors won out easy 4-14 v 1-5.
We played all our available players and as the game progressed the lads ability to hook and block became more prevalent. Also it was great to see the progress the players have made since last year with all now striking the sliotar with confidence and all going on good solo runs.

For the first time this year managers David Mahoney and Michael Cahill had a full panel to select from bu unfortunately the visitors to Corballa never arrived or contacted us or the referee that they would not be attending.
Instead the team had a good training session
Our U10 hurlers had their first games of the year on Monday evening in Kevinsfort. Luckily the dreadful weather held off till the final whistle was blown and then the heavens opened.
We played 4 matches.
First up was Coolera with both teams very evenly matched. All games only allowed ground hurling and as the evening progressed our lads improved greatly.
We then played Drumcliffe, but despite dominating possession we went down by one score. Naomh Eoin from Sligo town were our next opponents with a very good game being played. Our last game was against Easkey. Another tight game and again despite having plenty of chances we did not take them losing by a single score.
It was a great evenings entertainment for those there and a great learning experience for the young lads, most of whom were playing their first official game of hurling

The team played away to St.Farnans in the fifth round of the division 4 league. A gale force wind blew from the Sligo town end and completely ruined the game.
After the home side got the first point we broke upfield with the breeze and a strong run from Paul Sweeney ended with Ultan McGranahan scoring a goal low into the corner. The home side responded well and scored a few points and then a goal to put themselves up by 5. However 2 great long range points by Brian Howley and a free from Brian Lynn meant we turned over at the break trailing 1-6 v 1-3.
The sides exchanged points at the start of the second half with ours coming from Frank Barrett. However this was our last score for the half and the home side took full control for the final 20 mins to win 2-12 v 1-4.

St.Molaise Gaels were visitors to Corballa on Friday evening in the 11-a-side league. We had the breeze in the first half but failed to make it count and turned over losing by 3.
Grange moved further ahead in the second but a good fightback brought us back to 1 score with 7 minutes to go but the visitors finished stronger and won 17 v 11.

The team were in Skreen on Tuesday night where a strong cold breeze blew towards the Templeboy end. Missing Paul Flynn, Thomas Howley and Niall Judge, the lineup was young but all gave a good account of themselves.
For the first two quarters we played with the wind but the dominant Pats midfield still held sway and at the halfway point we trailed 8 v 6 with some notable scores being achieved with lads kicking off their weaker foot.
In the third quarter we were whitewashed by the stronger Pats team who scored from all positions of the field. In the fourth quarter we showed better ability and teamwork and got up the field for a couple of scores.

This match took place on Sunday in balmy weather at Corballa. This was a 15-a-side contest. The visitors had the breeze in the first half however we got off to a great start when Stevie Kilgannon finished a fumbled ball to the net in the first half. Like the evening before we squandered numerous scoring chances but just before the break a good team movement ended with Frank Barrett finishing to the net.
A few early points in the second half made the game secure but all players put in a good effort and worked hard till the final whistle at which point we had won by 2-11 v 0-8. It was great to have nearly a full squad to select from with Rónán Barrett making his senior debut with the team.

Saturday evening was a big night in the locality for we had our nearest neighbours Enniscrone as visitors for the senior league. This fixture had not happened in 20 years so a big crowd turned up for the event. The weather was perfect as the game got underway.
Kevin Langan had the red and whites in the lead early on but our visitors scored everytime they came down the field and despite us lording midfield our forwards were misfiring. A serious injury to Barry Judge just before the break delayed the short whistle. At the half time break we trailed 0-6 v 0-4, all our scores coming from Kevin Langan.
At the start of the second half we got the first score but this was immediately replied to. Seven minutes in a Kevin Langan attempt for a point ended up in the top corner of the net to give us a one point advantage which we did not relinquish for the rest of the game. We still missed a number of easy chances but in the last minute a great overhead catch by Darragh Gilmartin and pass to the onrushing Kevin Langan left him with the simple task of goaling and finishing the game with the scoreline of 2-11 v 0-8.

This years walk took place on Easter Monday on Bartra strand. The weather was stunning and a large turnout made the walk a very enjoyable affair for young and old. After the walk refreshments were provided for the walkers and a draw took place for those who had handed back their cards. Cards still can be handed in to your team managers or any of the committee members. Thanks to all who supported this event and thanks to all helped out.
A perfect evening for football away in Oxfield park on Saturday evening. Despite losing Niall Judge before the throw in, we got off to a good start with a goal from Paul Sweeney after a good move and an unselfish pass from Kevin Langan. The home team got back level with us halfway through the half and then they drove on to lead by five but 2 late points from Paul Kilcullen and Kevin Langan meant we trailed 1-4 v 1-6.
We trailed by 3 early in the second half but then a very intricate move finished with John O'Regan finishing high into the net, and points from Brian Lynn and Paul Sweeney put us two up with 12 minutes gone in the half however we fell away and did not score again till the end of the half with points from Rory Healy and Brian Lynn. At this stage Ronán Keane and Colin Gordon were carried off with leg injuries. We ended losing on a scoreline of 2-7 v 1-14.

The team made the long journey to Keash on Good Friday evening for this fixture. This was an evenly matched game throughout and despite missing a number of regulars the team put in a good hours work.
Having two goals disallowed did not help our cause but youngsters like Eoin Flynn, Barry Judge and Brian Howley, kept the team driving forward with Eoin Flynn scoring five points. In the end it was not good enough.
Next weekend the team have a home game against Owenmore Gaels on Sunday at home at 2:30pm.
This game took place in Corballa on Friday evening. The visitors were much stronger throughout all areas of the park and the result was never in doubt, however the lads kept trying to the end and showed good team spirit.
This game was played in Corballa on Thursday evening. With the competition now distorted due to clubs not now being allowed to play county minors and it now reduced to 11-a-side this game was unusual.
The visitors got off to a good start and lead 1-1 v 0-2 after 10 minutes. However Kevin McDonnells well taken goal after being put through by James Flynn and another from Eoin Flynn put us in control at the break.
The second half saw Michaels put up resistance early on but they faded badly in the last 15 minutes with goals from Eoin Flynn, Martin Foody, Brian Flynn and Jason Earlis.

Managers David Mahoney and Michael Cahill went into this game without two of their leaders when both Paul Flynn and Ódhran Quinn were unavailable. However this meant that other lads picked up their game. At the end of the first quarter the game was fairly even at 3 scores a piece, both sides having superiority.
The second quarter saw some very good defensive displays from both set of backs and an excellent display by Micheál Cahill scoring with both feet. However at ht we trailed by 1 score.
At the start of the third quarter things looked shaky but then we hit a purple patch and scores from James Tully, Kevin Naughton, Micheál Cahill and Thomas Howley put us in a good position for the last quarter. A tense last 5 mins in the final quarter when the visitors were in control despite the best efforts of James Boland and Niall Judge had everyone at the edge of their seats.
The final whistle was blown and both sets of players and officials surrounded the referee to find out the score which thankfully went our way.

The senior team travelled to Ballintogher to take on St.Michaels in the fourth round of the division 2 league. The conditions were summer like and after a slow enough start the game was level, Paul Sweeney scoring our goal from a good passing movement.
Approaching half time we were 2 points up but a purple patch in the last 3 minutes of the half saw us net 1-2, another goal for Sweeney, and points from the Brians Curley and Lynn left us leading 2-7 v 0-6 at the break.
Both sides exchanged a number of points early in the second. At one point we were ten points up, this was reduced to 6 but we finished strong with a string of good points from Niall Judge, Kevin Langan, David Carrabine and Mick Langan. We finished the winners on a score of 2-15 v 1-10.

The teams second league game was on Saturday with Drumcliffe and this game turned out to be a cracker. The lead changed every few minutes and in the end either team was sure who had taken the spoils. Points from Colin Gordon(2), Barry Judge(2), Ultan McGranahan(2), his first for the club meant we were well in it at the break with the score 0-7 v 1-5.
It was tit for tat in the second with our midfielders Fitzsimons and Kilgallon (his first game in over a year) kept the scoreboard turning. Ultan was getting greedy having never scored for the club till this evening so he popped over a third one. However when the visitors scored a goal with 8 mins left to put them up 4 it looked over but we responded with a great individual goal from Barry Judge, and points from Daragh Gilmartin, and Kevin Maye put us in front with minutes to go.
A tense finish ensued and Bart Barrins showed all his experience when carrying the ball to the corner flag and holding onto it for what seemed like minutes till the final whistle. The final score was 1-13 v 2-9.

Enniscrone were visitors to Corballa on Friday evening.
This was a good game with plenty of scores for each team but in the end we were the victors 6-8 v 2-7 with our goal taking very impressive.
Next Friday evening Easkey are visitors for the 11-a-side tournament.
Last Friday night the kids had their first games of the year when we visited our neighbours Enniscrone on Friday evening.
A great group of children played in all age groups which was great to see.
There is an underage registration night this Tuesday evening in the centre at 7:30 -9pm .
This was the first game of the year for David Mahoney and Mícheal Cahills charges. The game was held in Quigabar. At the end of the first quarter when we played with a very strong wind, we turned round 1 score a-piece. In the second quarter Enniscrone strenght started to show which continued in the third quarter even though they had the wind to contend with.
In the final quarter, we upped our performance and played some nice football, however Enniscrone took the spoils.

Played away in Achonry in very wintry conditions, this was a true game of two halves. At the half time break we turned around 9 points down, but within minutes of the start of the second half we were 6 points up.

The seniors had the third round of the division 2 league with a game in Corballa on Saturday evening against Calry. A gale force wind blew towards the church end and we had it’s assistance in the first half.
We started strongly and lead throughout the half but lack of ball going into our full forward line was to prove detrimental in the long run. Barry Judge was most unlucky with an effort he beat the keeper with but was cleared by a despairing dive by a vigilant defender. Kevin Langan had six points scored by half time and we lead by 0-7 v 0-4.
The second half was a ding-dong affair with the lead changing on a number of occasions. With 10 minutes remaining we looked like we had taken a decisive lead but Paul Sweeneys thunderbolt came back off the crossbar. A minute later Calry got a lucky goal and held on to win 1-12 v 0-11.

The team played St.Johns on Friday evening at Corballa in appalling conditions. With strong wind and a deluge of rain throughout the game, both teams did their best and amazingly in the conditions it turned out to be a great game of football.
At the end a strong finish by the young lads in red meant we came out victorious on the narrowest of margins 4-6 v 5-2.
Next Friday night they have an away game to Ballisodare.
A severely depleted team made the trip to Easkey last Thursday evening. Without the services of John McDonnell, Keith Jacob, Matthew Cullen and Stevie Curley, the team tried hard with Martin Foody putting in a great display despite his injury. The team can still reach the playoffs and have a game next Thurday evening at home to Owenmore Gaels.
Missing both Stephen Curley and Matthew Cullen due to injuries put this team at a massive disadvantage from the off which was not helped by the whirlwind start of the visitors to Corballa on Monday evening.
Despite keeper Arthur Beardshall making 2 good saves in the first half we turned over 13 points down.
With Jason Earlis moving out the field early in the second half it meant more of the ball coming in, however the young forwards who were giving away a lot physically tried their best but it just was not to be our evening.

The senior team had their second outing of the year in the Expert Electrical Division 2 league with a trip to Ballymote on Saturday evening. In near perfect conditions a good game took place with plenty of bite and industry from both sides.
We moved into an early lead with points from Kevin Langan, Niall Judge and Paul Kilcullen. Kevin Langan was taken down for a penalty en route to goal and this was expertly finished off by Paul Sweeney. Further points from Langan meant we went in at the break leading 1-6 v 0-4.
Kevin Langan started off the half in good fashion with two long range points and with Alan and Tom Cawley along with David Carrabine having good games and David Fox in control at full back we did not look in trouble in the half. A second goal, an own goal after a ricochet from a save by the keeper hit a defender from a strike from Kevin Langan put us in a strong position. The team had their first outing of the year when Ballymote were visitors to Corballa on Friday evening. They got off to a slow start and were out of contention early on but showed a good fighting and team spirit to keep going till the end.
Next weekend they travel to Carraroe to take on St.Johns in the second round of the league.
The county underage finals took place in Castleconnor on Saturday afternoon. It turned out a great day for the home club with Brendan Foody winning the U13 title beating his clubmate Seán Carrabine in the final. Jason Earlis took the U15 title. Noel McLoughlin lost out in the final of the U17 final.
Aoife Quinn lost the U15 plate final, with Shane Wright winning the U17 Plate final against clubmate Levi Keaveney.

The club U10 team made their first appearance of the year on Sunday in Markievicz Park during the half-time break of the Sligo v Derry NFL game. Despite the severe cold and rotten showers 20 hardy youngsters travelled to the game, thrilled to be able to show off their skills in front of the crowd.
Even the snow shower during their moment of glory did not stop them. We had an excellent game with Curry, with all kids getting time on the pitch.
Thanks to all the parents, players and supporters for their help and assistance on Sunday and thanks to county coaching officer Stephen Carty who was a great help at the ground.

The senior team played the final game of the Benson cup on Sunday in strong wind and hail showers. The team showed a good number of changes from the previous week. We played against the breeze in the first half and trailed 0-4 v 0-0 at ht.
The visitors maintained control in the second half and won with ease, final score 1-6 v 0-4.

The senior team had their first outing of the year in the Division 2 league. Coolaney/Mullinabreena were the visitors to Corballa on Sunday. A strong wind blew into the village end and we played against it in the first half.
We got off to a great start when a good flowing move in the first minute saw Brian Curley finish high into the visitors net. The visitors responded with 2 points but after 10 minutes we netted again when Barry Judge was at the end of a good passing move to finish under the keeper. Before half time, we had 3 more points two from Paul Kilcullen and one from play from Brian Lynn leaving the half time score as 2-3 v 0-4.
We started the second half well especially Niall Judge who scored a total of 5 points in the half. We moved out to a nine point lead but then lost both David Fox and Michael Langan to injury. Despite the visitors putting ina strong finish to the game we finished with a victory on a scoreline of 2-10 v 1-7.

The minor team made the long journey on Sunday morning to Grange for the second round of the league. After the great success last week this week was an anti-climax. However the team is shaping up well and when the injured players return it will add greatly to the panel The team lost 0-6 v 4-14.

The minor team had their first game of the year when Curry were visitors to Corballa on Sunday morning. This was a ding dong contest with the score changing regularly and both teams in the ascendancy at different times through the match. At half time we trailed 1-3 v 0-7, the goal being scored by James Flynn.
We dropped further behind early in the half but them a goal by Jason Earlis and a number of points from Stephen Curley put us into a lead. However Curley suffered a serious injury and this knocked the team for a while. Curry came within one point but a storming finish with points from McDonnell, Earlis and Kilcullen meant we won 2-11 v 1-9.

The senior team had their second outing of the year when we travelled to Quigabar on Saturday evening for the second round of the Benson Cup. We got off to a steady start but midway through the first half we scored a great goal from Brian Lynn. This was followed shortly afterwards by a few quick points from Kevin Langan, and Lynn. Coming up to the half time break Paul Sweeney finished to the corner of the net with a low drive to leave us in a commanding postion of 2-5 v 0-2 lead.
However the second half was a totally different story with all effort and bite seemingly left in the dressing rooms. It took us twenty minutes to register our only score in the half a point from play from Brian Curley, which kept us just in front but 2 goals in a minute, the first from a penalty and the second from a bad defensive mixup put our neighbours in command and winning with a score of 3-7 v 2-6.

The lotto jackpot is still on the up after this weeks draw on Saturday night in Muddys. The numbers drawn were 11,12,18 and 31 and no winner. Sarah Gillard of Muingwar was the only winner of the 3 number prize. The jackpot now moves to €12150 and the numbers will be drawn on March 3rd in Mahoneys. Get your ticket, it could be yours.

The senior team will have their second outing of the year when we make the short journey to Quigabar to take on Enniscrone/Kilglass. This will be the clubs first senior team meeting since 1991. The game is on next Saturday at 4pm.

There was no winner of the big prize and only one winner of the 3 number draw, the Kilcullen family, Muingwar. A large number of competitors partook during the day and the club would like to thank county board Chairman Cyril Feehily who was available to present the awards at the end of the day. Social night for our underage heros
The club held its’ prize giving night for our under 12 winning teams of 2010 in Mahoneys on Sunday evening. It was a very well attended and enjoyable for players and parents and thanks to all for attending. Chairman Darren Ruane got the proceedings started and thanked the very dedicated bunch of players who showed that hard work is rewarded on the field. David Mahoney presented the football medals to the members of that panel and Bart Barrins presented the hurlers with their medals. After the presentations the players were given a celebratory meal from Muddy Burns and the parents and supporters had finger food. A lovely evening was had by all and all are ready to get started in the next few weeks for 2011.

Michael Langan presided over this meeting last Wednesday evening in the community centre. A good attendance helped the meeting complete the management teams for the various underage teams for the coming year.
